The Cross River State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has commenced the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for aspirants seeking to contest the forthcoming elections on the party’s platform.

The exercise, which began at the party’s state secretariat in Calabar weekend, has already attracted the interest of the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Dr Effiong Nyong, who became the first aspirant to formally signal his intention to contest.

Speaking to journalists, Nyong said he had fulfilled all the requirements for participation, stressing that only qualified, credible and marketable aspirants should emerge as candidates of the party ahead of the next general elections.

He maintained that the ADC was positioning itself to provide an alternative platform for governance in Cross River State, describing the performance of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state as disappointing.

According to him, the ADC was determined to correct what he described as the failures of the present administration and restore purposeful leadership in the state.

The governorship hopeful also declared that the party was not prepared to compromise its ambitions through political negotiations or alliances that could undermine its objectives.

Nyong said the ADC remained committed to providing accountable leadership and driving meaningful development across Cross River State.

Speaking on the exercise, the party’s State Secretary, Dr MacFarlane Ejah, said the sale of forms covers all elective positions, including seats in the National Assembly and the Cross River State House of Assembly.

Ejah described the exercise as a major step in the party’s preparations for the elections, adding that the ADC was focused on presenting credible, people-oriented candidates.

He assured party members that the process would be transparent and open to all qualified aspirants.

“The ADC stands for a new era of politics built on integrity, competence and service to the people.

“We encourage capable and committed sons and daughters of Cross River State to take advantage of this opportunity to offer themselves for leadership,” he said.

LAWMA demolishes illegal structures on Lagos–Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, says it has cleared illegal structures and activities along the Alaba Rago setback on the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday while giving an update on operations carried out along the Alaba Rago corridor.

According to him, the removal of unauthorised traders, squatters and makeshift structures reflects the Lagos State Government’s strict stance against environmental abuse and improper waste disposal practices.

He explained that the enforcement became necessary due to continued indiscriminate dumping of refuse, obstruction of sanitation activities, and unlawful occupation of the highway setback by traders and squatters.

Gbadegesin noted that the exercise is aimed at restoring order, improving sanitation compliance, and safeguarding public infrastructure along one of the state’s busiest transport routes.

He maintained that road setbacks are not intended for commercial activities, residence or any form of encroachment, warning that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

“The government will continue to enforce environmental laws and prevent activities that undermine structured waste management and environmental sustainability across Lagos State,” he said.

He further advised traders and residents to make use of designated markets and approved waste disposal systems in the state.

According to him, environmental responsibility and adherence to regulations remain essential to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

The LAWMA boss explained that the enforcement operation was jointly carried out with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

He added that the exercise followed the expiration of a three-day notice issued to occupants of the affected area to vacate or comply with sanitation regulations.

During the operation, several carts used by illegal waste handlers and cart pushers were confiscated as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping and strengthen organised waste management practices in the area.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained collaboration with relevant agencies to maintain environmental order and reinforce sanitation enforcement across the state.

  • All Kwankwaso’s peace overtures to Gov Yusuf were rejected — Ex-Chief of Staff, Sagagi

All Kwankwaso’s peace overtures to Gov Yusuf were rejected — Ex-Chief of Staff, Sagagi

A former Chief of Staff to the Kano State Government, Shehu Wada Sagagi, has alleged that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf frustrated repeated efforts to reconcile with the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Wada Sagagi, in an exclusive interview with a local radio station, explained the lingering political tension between the governor and his political mentor.

According to him, the reconciliation process began at the early stage of the misunderstanding after concerns emerged that the dispute could deepen within the ruling political bloc in Kano State.

He said Kwankwaso had expressed readiness for peace and directed him to engage Governor Yusuf in order to understand the grievances behind the growing rift.

“I met the governor and conveyed Kwankwaso’s message to him. He personally fixed a date for a reconciliation meeting, but later failed to honour it,” Sagagi said during the interview.

The former aide further claimed that he made additional efforts to remind the governor about the proposed peace meeting, but alleged that his calls and messages were ignored.

“I reached out more than once to ensure the meeting held, but he stopped responding to my messages. At that point, the reconciliation effort could not move forward,” he added.

Sagagi maintained that Kwankwaso remained open to dialogue throughout the process, insisting that several opportunities were created to resolve the differences quietly.

Sagagi’s outburst is expected to fuel fresh debate over the reported cracks within Kano’s dominant political structure, especially amid speculations surrounding the relationship between Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso in recent months.

However, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, was not immediately available for comment on the issues raised by Sagagi as of press time.

Kano Govt, NAPTIP uncovers child’s adoption chains

The Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons have uncovered a network of groups allegedly luring vulnerable women with unwanted pregnancies, adopting their children, and subsequently trafficking them to other states for sale.

A report alleging that some children were illegally taken and adopted by a staff member of Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, identified as Maryam Dauda, triggered the recent investigation.

According to preliminary findings, the children were allegedly obtained from vulnerable young girls with unwanted pregnancies and subsequently taken out of Kano State without due legal process or authorization.

The matter was later reported to NAPTIP, which immediately notified the Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, who urgently intervened.

It was further alleged that the suspect illegally facilitated the adoption of the children and allegedly transferred them to the southern part of Nigeria for adoption.

The reports described the act as a violation of the children’s religious and cultural identity, as well as a breach of established legal adoption procedures.

Already, the Commissioner of the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Amina Abdullahi Sani, has taken decisive action following the reported case of alleged illegal adoption and child trafficking involving two children reportedly taken from a young woman residing in the Kwana Hudu area of Kano State.

The case was brought to the attention of the ministry by NAPTIP after reports emerged that the children were allegedly taken and illegally adopted by a staff member of Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, identified as Maryam Dauda, 45, a laboratory technician.

In response, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani promptly led a delegation of directors and senior officials from the ministry to NAPTIP’s office to ensure that appropriate steps were taken in line with the law and in the best interest of the affected children.

The two children involved in the alleged illegal adoption were subsequently brought to NAPTIP, where extensive discussions and preliminary investigations commenced among relevant stakeholders and authorities handling the matter.

The ministry further gathered allegations suggesting that some individuals exploit vulnerable young women facing unwanted pregnancies by unlawfully collecting and transporting newborn children outside Kano State for illegal adoption and possible trafficking purposes.

The commissioner strongly condemned all forms of child trafficking, illegal adoption, child abuse, exploitation, and neglect, describing such acts as inhumane, criminal, and unacceptable in Kano State.

She warned that the ministry, in collaboration with NAPTIP and other security and child protection agencies, would not tolerate any individual or group found engaging in activities that violate the rights, dignity, religious identity, and welfare of children.

Hajiya Amina reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Abba Kabir Yusuf to protecting children and vulnerable persons across the state.

She also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities relating to child trafficking, illegal adoption, abuse, or neglect to the appropriate authorities.

The commissioner assured the public that further investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

Israeli military confirms killing of Hamas commander Ezzedine Al-Haddad

The Israeli military on Saturday announced the killing of Ezzedine Al-Haddad, identified as the head of Hamas’ armed wing, during an air strike carried out in Gaza on Friday.

In a joint statement, the Israel Defence Forces and the Shin Bet internal security agency said Haddad was killed in what they described as a targeted operation conducted in Gaza City.

“The IDF and the ISA announced that yesterday, in a precise strike in the area of the City of Gaza, the terrorist Ezzedine Al-Haddad was eliminated,” the statement said.

Two Hamas officials also confirmed the development, stating that Haddad died after an Israeli strike hit a residential apartment and a civilian vehicle in Gaza City on Friday.

According to the Israeli military, Haddad was regarded as one of the remaining senior commanders within Hamas’ military structure and was allegedly involved in coordinating the October 7 attack on Israel.

The military further accused him of overseeing the detention of several Israeli hostages held by Hamas during the ongoing conflict.

“Throughout the war, Haddad was involved in the holding of many Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity,” the statement added.

Israeli authorities also alleged that Haddad supervised Hamas’ hostage detention network and intentionally remained close to captives as a strategy to avoid being targeted.

LaLiga: Real Madrid to sell Mbappe, Vinicius as Mourinho arrives

Real Madrid are looking to sell one of Kylian Mbappe or Vinicius Junior this summer, with Jose Mourinho set to take over as manager.

According to L’Equipe, the LaLiga giants believe that their partnership is not working.

This is only Mbappe’s second season at the Bernabeu, after arriving as a free agent from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman enjoyed a fine debut season, scoring 44 goals across all competitions, although Los Blancos ended the campaign without silverware.

On the other hand, Vinicius has been at Madrid since 2013 and became the team’s talisman at a point.

But after failing to win the Ballon d’Or in 2024, Vinicius’ numbers and performances have appeared to dwindle.

Mourinho is, however, expected to be consulted on any possible shakeup in the squad.
