Husband, wife arrested for stealing 4-month-old baby, other children in Ogun

A husband named Mathew Ugochukwu and his wife, Oluwarankami Ugochukwu, have been apprehended for stealing a four-month-old baby alongside other children in the Mowe area of Ogun State.

DAILY POST learnt that Oluwarankami had gone to visit the mother of the child who was sick and admitted in a clinic in Mowe on Saturday.

She tricked the mother into handing over the child, claiming she would care for the baby while the mother rested. But she absconded with the child.

When contacted on Wednesday, police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, told DAILY POST that upon the information, detectives of the Mowe Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Folake Afeniforo, immediately mobilized, while motor parks and strategic locations within the area were placed on red alert.

Babaseyi stated that the detectives tracked the duo to their hideout in the Kekere Ekun area of Mowe, where the child was recovered alongside two other children.

He said, “Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, detectives tracked the husband and wife duo to their hideout at Kekere Ekun area of Mowe on Monday at about 7:55pm, where the stolen child was successfully recovered alongside two other children found in their possession.

“The husband and wife suspects were promptly arrested and taken into police custody.”

Babaseyi disclosed that one of the children recovered had earlier been declared missing in 2024.

He noted that the biological parents of the recovered children, when contacted, identified their children, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Eleweran, for further investigation aimed at unraveling the full extent of the syndicate and prosecuting all persons connected to the crime.

Reacting to the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the swift response, professionalism, and resilience of the officers of Mowe Division, reiterating the command’s commitment towards combating child trafficking, abduction and other violent crimes across the state.

Nigerian military speaks on terrorists establishing operational base in South-West

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has dismissed reports suggesting that terrorist groups have established a permanent operational base in Nigeria’s South West region following the recent abduction of school pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the military described the attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as an isolated criminal act and not evidence of an entrenched terrorist presence in the region.

According to the statement, the affected schools are Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele and L.A. Primary School.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, expressed sympathy to the families of the victims, the Oyo State Government, and Nigerians over the incident, describing the abduction of innocent children and staff as “callous and reprehensible”.

He assured families that the Armed Forces of Nigeria was deploying all available resources to ensure the safe and unconditional release of the abducted victims.

According to the DHQ, previous clearance operations conducted in the Old Oyo National Park had significantly weakened criminal elements operating within the area.

“Current intelligence assessments do not support the conclusion that any structured or permanent terrorist base exists within the forests or hinterlands of the South West region,” the statement said.

The military added that troops are currently carrying out operations within the forest areas to track down the perpetrators and rescue the victims.

It disclosed that troops recently made contact with the suspected criminals and have since intensified pursuit operations in collaboration with other security agencies, local vigilantes, and community members providing human intelligence.

The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians, particularly residents of the South West, to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that operations would continue until the abducted victims are rescued and criminal networks in the region dismantled.

  • Kwankwaso working for Tinubu’s reelection behind the scene – Kano gov’s aide, Bature

Kwankwaso working for Tinubu’s reelection behind the scene – Kano gov’s aide, Bature

Sanusi Bature, spokesman of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, has said the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDP, vice presidential hopeful, Rabiu Kwankwaso is working for President Bola Tinubu’s reelection behind the scene.

Bature made the allegation while further claiming that Kwankwaso is confused.

Featuring on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Bature said: “Kwankwaso is getting confused, somebody who does not believe in Yoruba presidency has been moving from Abeokuta and Ibadan to seek political fortune. He has been engaging Obasanjo, the Oyo State governor to secure a political fortune.

“This is an element of political confusion because if you believe in something you have to work for it and if you don’t, you can’t work on it.

“At some point, he sought Governor Makinde to secure a similar partnership and when Makinde opted out of that discussion, Kwankwaso went to Obi, the same Obi that he has been calling names. He saw Obi as an inferior political leader that he can’t even work with in 2023.”

Bature further accused Kwankwaso of defecting to NDC despite sending Governor Yusuf to Tinubu to prepare for his defection to the APC.

“Somebody who said Tinubu is his friend; he ordered his political godson, the governor, to meet the President to discuss the issue of partnership and defection to APC. He withdrew at the very last hour to pursue another separate movement.

“What I want to make clear here is that there are those working for Tinubu openly, directly in the public space and there are those who can work for Tinubu behind the scenes. And I believe whatever Kwankwaso is doing will favour Tinubu at the end of the day because Kwankwaso has worked for Tinubu in 2023.

“I’m a member of the APC and have been a member of the opposition in Kano and I know what happened in 2023. I believe that Kwankwaso is working for Tinubu in 2027 behind the scene,” he added.

Sowore blasts Tinubu over insecurity after Oyo school attack

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has again criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the country’s security situation following reports surrounding the killing of a teacher abducted during a school attack in Oyo State.

The remarks were contained in a statement posted on Sowore’s official page.

Sowore referenced comments he made during the 2023 election period, where he said he warned Nigerians about the possible consequences of Tinubu’s administration.

“During the 2023 election season, I went on Agidigbo FM 88.7, warning Nigerians and particularly Yorubas about the disaster Bola Ahmed Tinubu would bring upon the country. Sadly, many refused to listen.

“I was also on Miliki 101.3FM in Lagos, saying the same thing, but callers kept phoning in telling me to shut up.

“Now look at what ‘Emilokan’ has done to you all. Tinubu is a disaster!

“NB: The photo here is reportedly that of the mathematics teacher pleading for his life after bandits raided a secondary school in Oyo State and abducted several others before later beheading him,” Sowore stated.

  • China’s President Hosts Putin In Beijing Days After Trump’s Visit

China’s President Hosts Putin In Beijing Days After Trump’s Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday, hosting the Kremlin leader at a formal welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People just days after U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his own state visit to China.

Putin’s visit comes only days after Trump’s own trip to Beijing. Experts say the sequence is cementing Beijing’s image as an influential superpower.

“The message is clearly one that China maintains friendship and strategic partnership with whichever power it likes, and the USA is just one of them,” said Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute at the University of London.

Following the welcoming ceremony, the two delegations held bilateral talks, with a signing of cooperation agreements expected to follow.

The leaders were also scheduled to meet again in the evening at a gala reception marking the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship.

Putin described Russia-China relations as having reached a “truly unprecedented level” in remarks carried by Chinese state media ahead of the trip. On the economic front, the two sides signalled significant progress on energy cooperation.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed that Russia’s oil exports to China grew by 35 percent in the first quarter of 2026, with Russia also emerging as one of China’s biggest natural gas suppliers.

Putin noted earlier this month that the two countries had made “a very substantial step forward” in oil and gas cooperation, and expressed hope that final details would be wrapped up during the Beijing visit.

The deepening economic ties come against a backdrop of sweeping Western sanctions on Moscow following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

China, which has declared neutrality in the conflict, has nonetheless become Russia’s top trading partner and its largest customer for energy exports.

Western governments have also accused Beijing of supplying high-tech components used in Russia’s weapons industry, accusations China has not acted on.

Putin was also quick to give his blessing to Xi’s diplomacy with Washington. “We stand only to benefit from this, from the stability and constructive engagement between the U.S. and China,” Putin said, adding that Moscow views closer U.S.-China dialogue as a stabilising force for the global economy.

The sequence of summits, Trump one week and Putin the next, underscores Beijing’s growing role as a key player in global diplomacy.

  • Lagos DSVA receives over 450 domestic violence complaints monthly

Lagos DSVA receives over 450 domestic violence complaints monthly

Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, has disclosed that it now receives over 450 complaints of domestic violence every month across its various reporting platforms.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, made this known on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ engagement and technical training session on the Lagos Emergency Responder Management System, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ikeja.

The event was organised by the Lagos State Command and Control Centre as part of efforts to reduce delays in emergency response and strengthen coordination among relevant agencies.

Vivour-Adeniyi stated that the agency records between 400 and 450 new domestic violence cases monthly through its toll-free hotline, social media channels, and other online reporting platforms.

She noted that while the figures remain significant, they likely represent only a fraction of actual cases, as domestic and sexual violence continues to be widely under-reported both in Lagos and globally.

“We know we’ve not scratched the surface because these issues remain some of the most under-reported crimes, not just in Lagos or Nigeria, but globally. But we are encouraged that more people now have faith in the system,” she said.

According to her, increased public awareness has encouraged more victims to seek help through emergency lines, agency offices, and digital reporting channels.

She added that the agency operates a 24-hour virtual referral and response system for gender-based violence cases in collaboration with emergency responders and the state Command and Control Centre.

“The idea is to ensure that regardless of the time or day, anybody who calls the 203 line can access critical services such as emergency response and psychosocial support,” she said.

Vivour-Adeniyi explained that the DSVA was established to coordinate responses to domestic and sexual violence cases across Lagos State, stressing that such violence is not limited to physical abuse alone.

She noted that the state’s Protection Against Domestic Violence Law also recognises emotional and verbal abuse as forms of domestic violence.

“We continue to increase awareness and let people know they should not die in silence. The fact that the abuse is not physical does not make it less harmful,” she added.

The agency chief also cautioned parents against concealing cases of sexual abuse involving children, warning that such actions amount to obstruction of justice.

She referenced legal provisions that criminalise the concealment of sexual offences, stating that offenders could face up to three years imprisonment.

Vivour-Adeniyi urged parents and guardians to make use of available support systems to ensure victims receive protection, care, and access to justice.
