    34-Year-Old Mane Named In Senegal’s W/Cup Squad

Al-Nassr forward Sadio Mane has been included in Senegal’s 28-man squad for this summer’s World Cup.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich player was named in Senegal’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but he missed the tournament with a knee injury.

Mane was among the Senegal players who remained on the pitch during January’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

The 34-year-old encouraged his team-mates who had walked off in protest to return and finish the game, which Senegal won thanks to a Pape Gueye goal in extra-time.

However, a Confederation of African Football (Caf) appeals board later declared Morocco winners of the tournament following Senegal’s controversial walk-off.

Mane will be joined in attack at the World Cup by Bayern Munich forward Nicolas Jackson, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has also selected Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, Sunderland’s Habib Diarra and Tottenham Hotspur’s Pape Matar Sarr.

Thiaw will have to trim his squad to the Fifa-mandated 26 players ahead of the final deadline on 2 June.

Senegal open their World Cup campaign in New Jersey against France on 16 June, followed by Norway on 22 June and Iraq on 26 June.

The expanded 48-team competition in the US, Canada and Mexico runs from 11 June to 19 July.

  • ‘We’ll not copy anybody’ – LP speaks on APC’s claim of conducting best primaries

‘We’ll not copy anybody’ – LP speaks on APC’s claim of conducting best primaries

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Nemadi Usman, has said the party has no plan to copy the way and manner the All Progressives Congress, APC, has conducted its primary elections so far.

Speaking to journalists during the screening of the aspirants for the different contestable positions for the 2027 general elections, Usman said, “Labour Party will not copy anybody” in response to a recent statement made by the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who said the party has conducted one of the best primaries so far.

APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, had asserted that no other political party in the nation can compare to the achievements of the ruling party in the execution of its primary elections.

This assertion comes despite the considerable internal strife generated by the APC’s primary elections.

DAILY POST reports that controversies have consistently revolved around issues such as candidate imposition, allegations of electoral misconduct, violence, and the exclusion of stakeholders.

Furthermore, the consensus method has frequently faced strong opposition, with dissatisfied aspirants voicing concerns that the process lacks transparency and excludes popular candidates.

Nevertheless, during an appearance on Arise News, Basiru maintained that no political party in the country can surpass the ruling party’s performance, which he rated very highly.

He emphasised that no other party will equal the level of organisation and transparency demonstrated by the ruling party.

Speaking on this, Nemadi said, “Well, we are not copying anybody because we are Labour Party, so we cannot copy anybody.”

Furthermore, she explained that about three presidential candidates have passed through the party’s screening ahead of the primary elections.

Speaking on the general belief that the exit of the party’s 2023 presudential candidate, Peter Obi from the party has further reduced its influence on the electorate and deepened its chances of securing victories in the coming elections, she said, “I don’t think so, from the number of people indicating interest to use the party as a platform to contest the election, I think the party is still strong.”

On former National Chairman, Julius Abure’s gifting nomination forms to aspirants, the party Chairman said, “Well, we received the news, surprisingly. It was a big surprise because if the court had said his tenure was over, we then went to Umuahia, had a national convention and new leaders were elected, INEC was there. INEC recognised what we did. The names on the website of INEC as the leaders of the party are those who were voted for in Umuahia.

“Then he comes and he’s distributing free forms. Well, I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. Well, we are yet to be served. We heard that he went to the Supreme Court. We don’t know about it yet.”

Continuing,, she said, “It’s very illegal and we have written a petition to the police. We’ve reported to the IGP and we’ve reported to the DG DSS.

“My take is that the Supreme Court would maintain its stand and they can’t change what they have done before. If my tenure is over tomorrow, they say my tenure is over, I’ll go.”

  • Germany Recall 40-Year-Old Neuer As First-Choice Goalkeeper

Germany Recall 40-Year-Old Neuer As First-Choice Goalkeeper

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has come out of international retirement to be named in Germany’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, with manager Julian Nagelsmann saying the 40-year-old will be his team’s number one for the tournament.

Neuer, who has helped Bayern win the Bundesliga title and reach the Champions League semi-finals this season, won the last of his 124 caps for his country in a Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat by Spain.

He later announced he was ending his international career, which included helping Germany win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

“Everyone knows the aura and quality Manu has, what he brings to a team,” said Nagelsmann.

“We’re planning with him as our number one.”

Neuer has played in four World Cups and is the latest of a number of players aged 40 or over to be selected for this summer’s tournament, which will take place across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, Croatia midfielder Luka Modric, 40, Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, 43, and Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Edin Dzeko, 40, have also been named in the squads of their countries.

Nagelsmann has included five Premier League players in his 26-man squad, with Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, Brighton’s Pascal Gross and Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz included along with Newcastle United duo Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade.

Bayern youngster Lennart Karl, 18, and Galatasaray winger Leroy Sane have also made the cut.

Germany, who have won the World Cup four times, open their campaign against Curacao on 14 June before playing the Ivory Coast and Ecuador in their other Group E games.

Since winning the 2014 tournament, Germany have bowed out at the group stage of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

“The statement stands,” said Nagelsmann. “We want to become world champions. Every player who is nominated needs to show it now every day.”

  • Female NYSC Members Outnumber Males, Says DG

Female NYSC Members Outnumber Males, Says DG

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, says female participation in the scheme has consistently surpassed male mobilisation figures since 2021 nationwide.

Nafiu said this in Abuja, ahead of the scheme’s 53rd anniversary, describing it as a milestone in education and gender inclusion.

He said male graduates dominated mobilisation from the scheme’s establishment in 1973 until 2020 before the shift in 2021, when female participation began to exceed male figures annually.

“Since 2021, more females have consistently participated in the scheme than males,” he said, attributing the change to progress in education and gender equality policies.

Nafiu said the development reflected sustained global and national efforts promoting girl-child education, women empowerment and improved access to higher education opportunities across Nigeria.

“It is not magic. The Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals placed premium on girl-child education and gender equality,” he said.

He added that the increasing number of female graduates demonstrated improved educational access and attainment for women as well as the impact of long-term advocacy programmes nationwide.

According to him, policymakers and employers must prepare for demographic shifts that may significantly reshape workforce composition and social policy planning in coming years.

“There are always unintended consequences. When efforts are concentrated on accelerating growth in one area, that area may eventually overtake the other,” he said.

Nafiu said Nigeria was likely to witness a larger female workforce within the next 10 to 15 years due to the ongoing educational trend across institutions nationwide.

“In the next 10 to 15 years, we are likely to have a larger female workforce with increased requests for maternity leave and childcare-related welfare support,” he said.

He urged organisations and human resource systems to begin developing policies capable of addressing changing workforce realities and gender-related labour demands.

Speaking on the Nigerian Education Repository and Databank (NERD), Nafiu said it was designed to preserve academic records and strengthened documentation of graduates’ research outputs nationwide.

“It is a government policy that mandates graduates to upload their theses, projects and academic works into a databank for record and academic referencing purposes,” he said.

He explained that NYSC served as an implementation platform because most graduates pass through the scheme immediately after completing their academic programmes.

“Government knows that the next stop for most graduates is NYSC, so the scheme naturally becomes an enforcement tool for implementing the policy,” he said.

Nafiu said discussions were ongoing to integrate NERD processes digitally with NYSC operations to simplify compliance for prospective corps members nationwide.

According to him, stakeholders proposed seamless Application Programming Interface (API) integration between both systems to improve efficiency and reduce administrative challenges.

“Our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible for prospective corps members through proper digital integration,” he said.

The DG said NYSC would continue adapting to changing realities while sustaining its role in promoting national unity, youth development and social integration across Nigeria.
