Zamfara govt bans farming in school premises, issues 30-day quit notice to unauthorised occupants

The Zamfara State Government has banned all forms of farming within school premises across the state, declaring that school grounds are meant for learning and not agricultural or commercial activities.

The directive was announced on Monday by the State Overseer Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Garba Gajam, during a press briefing in Gusau, where he outlined new policy measures aimed at strengthening the education sector.

Gajam said the reforms are part of efforts to reposition education in the state, stressing that “the era of bureaucracy is over in education.”

He directed that farming activities within school compounds must cease immediately except where they are carried out strictly for educational purposes.

“Farming activities within school premises are hereby banned, except for strictly educational purposes. Principals, head teachers and staff are hereby directed to comply in order to maintain a conducive learning environment,” he said.

The commissioner also announced a 30-day ultimatum for unauthorised occupants of teachers’ quarters across the state to vacate the facilities.

He instructed principals and school administrators to ensure full compliance with the directive, emphasising that the quarters are designated exclusively for teachers and are intended to support effective service delivery in schools.

According to Gajam, the measures form part of the government’s broader efforts to improve the management of educational institutions and create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Insecurity: Borno, Adamawa Christian elders urge FG to deploy forest guards to Sambisa

Christian elders from Borno and Adamawa states have called on the Federal Government to deploy forest guards to Sambisa Forest to strengthen efforts against insurgency and improve security in the North-East.

The appeal was made in Abuja on Monday at the end of a three-day fasting and prayer session organised by Marghi leaders, who also sought divine intervention for the release of abducted schoolchildren in parts of Borno and Oyo states.

The elders urged the government to “flood Sambisa Forest with forest guards now” as part of measures to dislodge terrorists and curb persistent attacks on vulnerable communities.

Their call follows the reported abduction of between 42 and 51 children, mostly toddlers and primary school pupils, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Mussa town, covering Mussa, Birri and Shikarkir areas of Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on May 15, 2026.

On the same day, bandits reportedly attacked Ahoro-Esinele and neighbouring communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting 46 people, including pupils, secondary school students and a toddler.

Speaking on behalf of the Marghi community in Abuja, Elder Gambo Kadir said insecurity in the affected areas is more widespread than is often reported, claiming that many incidents go undocumented.

According to him, frontline local government areas including Madagali, Gwoza, Askira/Uba and Chibok have continued to experience repeated attacks for more than a decade, while the recent abduction in Mussa reflects the persistent security challenges facing residents.

Kadir also criticised the government’s approach to tackling insurgency, alleging that suspected terrorists are being rehabilitated instead of being decisively dealt with.

He further reported a fresh abduction in Kirchiga town, Borno State, shortly after the Mussa incident.

The elders called for increased military deployment to communities bordering Sambisa Forest, particularly in Madagali, Askira/Uba, Chibok and Gwoza.

They also urged the Federal Government to strengthen intelligence gathering and deploy modern technology to aid the rescue of abducted victims and combat insurgency.

No difference between Tinubu, Obi, Kwankwaso, they’re part of Nigeria’s problem – Valentine Ozigbo

Former Anambra State governorship candidate and founder of the Valiant Movement, Valentine Ozigbo, has said there is little difference between Nigeria’s leading political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing them as part of the country’s current problems.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, Ozigbo said Nigeria’s political challenges cut across party lines, insisting that wrongdoing is not limited to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He argued that there is a widespread lack of morality in Nigerian politics and expressed disappointment in the country’s political leadership, regardless of party affiliation.

According to him, young Nigerians should stop placing their hopes solely on established political figures, many of whom, he said, have contributed to the nation’s challenges.

Ozigbo urged the younger generation to take a more active role in shaping the country’s future, stressing that they would ultimately be responsible for rebuilding Nigeria.

He added that he has lost confidence in the older generation’s ability to deliver the level of transformation needed to address the country’s problems.

Ozigbo said:  “I’m not exonerating APC. I’m not defending APC. I never went in to APC to applaud what I see in APC. A lot of evils happen in Nigeria, in APC, Labour Party, NDC, in all of them.

“There’s dearth of morality in politics in Nigeria. Forget who’s in power. As a matter of fact, I don’t even see much difference in all these people running for elections.

“There’s no difference between Tinubu, Obi, and Kwankwaso and co. That’s what I see; they are problems right now.

“I  am saying this because the younger generation needs to wake up and stop outsourcing their destiny to people who, in some cases, have contributed to the problems of Nigeria, while expecting them to fix it.

“We need to remind young people that they are the ones who will ultimately rebuild this country. I have lost confidence in the older generation to drive the kind of change Nigeria needs.”

S/Arabia, Uruguay Share Points As Iran, New Zealand Play 2-2

Saudi Arabia held two-time champions Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, four years after stunning eventual champions Argentina in their tournament opener in Qatar.

Uruguay dominated much of the first half but Saudi Arabia took the lead against the run of play in the 41st minute when veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made a costly error from a set-piece. The goalkeeper parried the ball into the path of Al Amri, who calmly poked home from close range.

The majority of the second half was played in Saudi Arabia’s half as Uruguay pressed relentlessly for an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off when Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais also made a mistake, allowing Ronald Araujo to pounce on a loose ball and fire home.

Hydration breaks once again proved influential. Following the first break, both teams increased their intensity and Saudi Arabia went on to score the opening goal.

In the second half, another break provided Saudi Arabia with an opportunity to regroup and withstand sustained Uruguayan pressure.

The result leaves Saudi Arabia and Uruguay level on points in Group H alongside Spain and tournament debutants Cape Verde, who earlier made history by holding the European champions to a draw in their first-ever appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Meanwhile, Iran twice came from behind to deny New Zealand a first-ever FIFA World Cup victory in a thrilling 2-2 draw in Los Angeles.

Motherwell forward Elijah Just gave New Zealand a dream start, smashing home a half-volley after Chris Wood held up the ball and laid it into his path.

New Zealand continued to threaten, but as has frequently been the case at this World Cup, the first hydration break midway through the opening half shifted the momentum. Iran capitalised when Ramin Rezaeian flicked the ball past goalkeeper Max Crocombe to level the score.

Before equalising, Iran’s star striker Mehdi Taremi had come close when he struck the post with a powerful effort from outside the box. Iran also had a goal ruled out for offside before the interval.

New Zealand were slow to settle after the break, but Just struck again to restore their lead. Combining once more with Wood, he lifted the ball over Alireza Beiranvand to make it 2-1.

However, Iran responded once more. Mohammad Mohebbi met a cross from Rezaeian and guided a header in off the inside of the post to secure a share of the spoils.

The result means every team in Group G has one point after Belgium and Egypt also played out a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture.
