Nigeria, Cameroon Sign Agreement On Border Security

Nigeria and Cameroon have signed an agreement to deepen bilateral defence cooperation and secure the shared southern border.

The agreement was signed in Yaoundé on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), and Cameroon’s Minister Delegate to the Presidency in Charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo.

The signing followed two days of negotiation between defence and security experts from both countries. The MoU sets up an updated strategy to tackle emerging security threats on land and at sea along the Nigeria–Cameroon border, and builds on the existing defence cooperation between both nations.

The agreement would strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two nation militaries, intelligence sharing, logistics support, joint training, exchange of personnel, and stronger mechanisms for responding jointly to security threats.

The Nigeria Defence Minister said the MoU would now serve as a structured framework for military cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon, and would help formalise collaboration on shared security concerns.

The talks also focused on putting the recently set up Combined Maritime Joint Task Force into full operation, as both countries see the collaboration as a key strategy for improving maritime security and protecting their economic and security interests in the Gulf of Guinea.

General Musa also said that Nigeria remains open to deeper collaboration in defence technology and innovation. He noted that one of the major challenges facing defence capability development in Africa has been the limited indigenous production of military hardware.

He called for stronger regional partnerships in the development of that area

In response, Assomo said Cameroon was interested in advancing cooperation in defence innovation and technology, and he confirmed that a formal proposal is currently being prepared to foster the shape to concrete bilateral arrangements in that area.

  • Alleged N110.4bn Kogi Fraud: Witness Tells Court He Paid 50–60 Percent of Tax Consultancy Commission To Kogi Revenue Officials

Alleged N110.4bn Kogi Fraud: Witness Tells Court He Paid 50–60 Percent of Tax Consultancy Commission To Kogi Revenue Officials

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, told the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Maitama, Abuja, that he paid between 50 and 60 percent of the commissions earned by his company from consultancy services rendered to the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, KSIRS, to some officials of the agency.

The witness, who testified as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s, eighteenth prosecution witness, PW18, made the disclosure before Justice Maryanne Anineh while being led in evidence by the Commission’s lead counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN.

The EFCC is prosecuting Bello alongside Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu on a 16-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving the sum of N110.4 billion.

The witness, who told the court that his companies were involved in information technology, software development, software implementation, marketing and tax automation services, recalled how he came in contact with the EFCC, stating that, “my company had business dealings with the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service. It was in connection with that that my company was invited.”

The witness confirmed making statements to the Commission and explained that his company served as a consultant to the KSIRS, providing tax process automation, tax audits and advisory services on tax policy and strategy.

Asked whether the services rendered were free, he answered in the negative, explaining that his company was initially entitled to 15 per cent commission on tax collections exceeding N350 million.

“The agreement was to receive 15 per cent commission on transactions above N350 million. The agreement was later reviewed downward to five per cent because the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, had grown significantly and our operating costs became lower due to automation,” he said.

He further identified former KSIRS Chairman, Senator Yakubu Oseni, as one of the officials he dealt with during the consultancy arrangement. Speaking on the disbursement of commissions received by his company, the witness disclosed that between 50 and 60 per cent of the commissions were paid to certain stakeholders.

Asked whether such payments formed part of the consultancy agreement, he replied, “No.”

He added that the payments were made through bank transfers and cash transactions, stating that they were carried out based on directives from Senator Oseni through his Personal Assistant, Yusuf Abdulmumuni.

According to him, cash payments were also subsequently made on the instructions of Oseni’s successor, Aliyu Nda Salami, through Salami’s Personal Assistant, Abdulwahab.

The witness identified Exhibit X1 as the statement of account of Bespoke Business Solution domiciled in Zenith Bank Plc and Exhibit AD1 as the company’s Sterling Bank account statement.

He told the court that although the consultancy engagement commenced around 2016 and ended in 2017, the Sterling Bank account statement covered transactions from 2016 to 2022.

The witness further informed the court that one Jami’u Salihu was nominated by Senator Oseni as a signatory to the Bespoke project account maintained with Zenith Bank.

“Jami’u Salihu signs independently from me,” he said.

While reviewing transactions contained in Exhibit AD1, K.P confirmed several inflows from the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service and corresponding withdrawals by Jami’u Salihu.

He identified an inflow of N92,444,992.60 on August 9, 2017, followed by withdrawals by Salihu. He also confirmed another inflow of N261,836,882.78 on August 14, 2017, with subsequent withdrawals by the same signatory.

The witness further confirmed transactions totaling N70 million paid to Efab Properties on August 17, 2017, comprising N25 million and N45 million transfers.

However, he stated that he could not determine the property for which the payments were made because they were not initiated by him.

“I wouldn’t know which property was paid for because it was not my transaction,” he said.

The witness also identified credits totaling about N260 million received on September 11, 2017, and stated that certain payments made to Echis Materials, Quant and Kalaz Ventures Limited were not his transactions but were carried out by Jami’u Salihu.

When asked whether there had been any complaints from the Kogi State Government regarding the performance of his company’s obligations under the consultancy arrangement, K.P answered: “No.”

During cross-examination by counsel to the first and second defendants, P.B Daudu SAN, the witness disclosed that the other shareholders in his company were M K. and A K.

He maintained that his company satisfactorily executed the services for which it was engaged and confirmed that Jami’u Salihu became a signatory to the company’s account following the execution of the necessary account documentation.

The witness also stated that, to the best of his knowledge, Senator Yakubu Oseni, Yusuf Abdulmumuni and Jami’u Salihu were still alive.

Also, the prosecution called its nineteenth witness, PW19, Jamilu Abdullahi, a Bureau de Change operator.

Led in evidence by Pinheiro, the witness identified himself as the owner of E-Traders International Limited, Kunfayakun Global Limited and De-Remita International Limited.

Abdullahi informed the court that he was familiar with Keyless Nature Limited and Ejadams Essence Limited through one of his customers, Abba Adaudu.

He also identified Exhibits AQ, AB2 and AK as statements of account belonging to his companies and his personal account.

The witness further confirmed knowledge of Forza Oil and Gas Limited, Whales Oil and Gas Limited and Alyeshua Solutions Services Limited.

Earlier in the proceedings, the court continued the cross-examination of Prosecution Witness 17, PW17, Shenu Bello Bala, an estate agent and commodity trader.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel, the witness clarified that he was neither related to Ali Bello nor Yahaya Bello and was not from Kogi State.

“I happen to bear the name Bello. Ali Bello is my friend and business partner. I have known him for about 13 to 14 years, somewhere around 2012,” he said.

Following his cross-examination by counsel to all the defendants and in the absence of further questions,

PW17 was discharged from the witness box.

Thereafter, Justice Anineh adjourned the matter till October 14, 15, 27 and 28, 2026, for continuation of trial.

Ndoma-Egba Backs Oyebanji’s Re-Election, Urges Transparent Ekiti Guber Election

Former Senate Leader and Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), has expressed confidence that Ekiti State Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji will emerge victorious in Saturday’s governorship election.

Ndoma-Egba, however, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair and transparent election that reflects the will of the people.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the former lawmaker also appealed to residents of Ekiti State to remain peaceful and law-abiding before, during and after the election.

He said he was optimistic that Governor Oyebanji would secure a second term in the June 20, off-cycle governorship poll, citing the administration’s developmental strides and governance record.

“As the good people of Ekiti State prepare for the governorship poll on Saturday, June 20, 2026, I extend my best wishes to the incumbent Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji in his bid for a second term in office,” Ndoma-Egba said.

According to him, the governor’s achievements since assuming office have earned him widespread support across the state.

The former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), who regularly visits Ekiti State in his capacity as FUOYE Pro-Chancellor, said continuity in leadership would ensure the completion of ongoing projects and the sustenance of policies already initiated by the current administration.

He expressed confidence that voters would exercise their civic responsibility peacefully and called on all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies and the electoral umpire, to play their respective roles in ensuring a credible election.

Ndoma-Egba also urged political actors to place the interest of Ekiti State above partisan considerations and contribute to a peaceful electoral environment.

He added that a transparent and credible governorship election would further strengthen democracy and deepen public confidence in the electoral process.

SEDC: ‘Igbo always hurting themselves’ – Chekwas Okorie

The pioneer National Chairman of APGA, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has urged stakeholders in the South-East to support the South-East Development Commission, SEDC, and avoid actions capable of undermining the newly established intervention agency.

Okorie made the appeal on Wednesday in Enugu while reacting to the controversy surrounding the operations of the commission following its recent clash with the Senate Committee overseeing its activities.

DAILY POST recalls that the Senate Committee, chaired by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, had expressed concerns over the management of the commission, including its expenditure on office accommodation and consultancy services.

Speaking at a press conference, Okorie said the South-East should desist from “hurting itself” at a time when a development institution designed to address the region’s challenges was beginning to take shape.

“I have been involved in the struggle for the South-East for over 50 years without interruption.

“I know how much damage we do to ourselves, especially when good things are about to come our way,” he said.

According to him, the establishment of the commission by President Bola Tinubu marked a significant step towards addressing developmental issues arising from years of neglect and the impact of the Nigerian civil war on the region.

Okorie commended the President for creating the commission and providing it with a clear mandate to drive development in the South-East.

On concerns raised by the Senate Committee, Okorie questioned why the issues were brought into the public domain several months after funds had been appropriated for the commission.

He maintained that oversight responsibilities should be carried out diligently and in a manner that would not create the impression of divisions or ulterior motives within the region.

“Let us stop hurting ourselves. It is too early. After the commission waited for about one year and eight months before receiving funds, six months later the Senate committee suddenly began to raise alarm publicly. Oversight should be carried out diligently and maturely, without creating the impression that there are ulterior motives,” Okorie added.

Okorie, however, criticised the commission’s communication strategy, saying inadequate public engagement had fuelled rumours and speculation about its activities.

He urged the commission to provide regular updates on its achievements, challenges and plans for funds already released.

World Cup: Lionel Messi is gone, what we have now is AI – Sunday Oliseh

Former Super Eagles captain and manager, Sunday Oliseh, has characterized Lionel Messi’s extraordinary performance in Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener as surpassing conventional football, insisting that the former Barcelona forward has evolved into an “AI” version of himself.

Messi delivered an exceptional performance as Argentina commenced their World Cup title defense with a 3-0 triumph over Algeria, netting a hat-trick in a match that occurred days to his 39th birthday.

The Argentine captain’s three goals also enabled him to match the record of 16 World Cup goals set by German legend Miroslav Klose.

In response to Messi’s display, Oliseh stated that the Argentine star’s capacity to maintain dominance at such a high level at his age is unprecedented in the history of football.

“This is Lionel Messi AI. There is no other way to describe this. Never in the history of football has a 38-year-old man performed as Messi did yesterday. Not only did he score three goals in an opening match, but the manner in which he scored them is remarkable,” Oliseh stated on Global Football Insights with Oliseh.

The former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder further noted that Messi’s brilliance reminded him of a nickname given to the Argentine by a childhood friend, yet he believes the forward’s recent performances necessitate a new designation.

“A childhood friend of mine has consistently referred to Messi as the oracle for the past 15 years. Based on what I observed yesterday, I will now refer to him as the Lionel Messi AI. It is not solely due to his three goals, but rather the manner in which he achieved them.

“Now, you know I have a passion for shooting. The way he struck the ball for the third goal, the precision, the movement. And Messi does not merely score tap-in goals; he certainly walks. But consider it this way,” he said
