Ex-Reps aspirant, Khalifa Pasali vows Hisbah for Plateau

A former House of Representatives aspirant for Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Hon. Khalifa Pasali, has stated that if he had won his election into the Green Chamber, one of his major priorities would have been sponsoring the establishment of Hisbah Corp in the state to help combat high rising cases of drug abuse, indiscipline, corruption, prostitution and alcohol consumption.

Pasali, who bared his mind in an interview with select journalists in Jos on Wednesday, said he has been worried over the rise of societal menace in the state, especially in Jos North Local Government Area where there is a sizable number of Muslims.

He added that if he has been elected, one of his major priorities would have been sponsoring the establishment of Hisbah in the state to help tackle the menace.

According to Pasali, the large Muslim population in Plateau State justifies the need for such an institution.

“We have over three million Muslims in Plateau State, and not having a body like Hisbah is a disadvantage to the Muslim community.

“Such an organization would help promote moral values and contribute to the fight against social vices affecting our society,” he said.

Pasali further stressed that despite not being elected into office, he remains committed to pursuing initiatives that will benefit the people of Plateau State.

“I will continue to lobby for the establishment of Hisbah in Jos and will go to every extent possible to ensure Plateau gets what it deserves,” he added.

  • Nigeria’s economic failures creating openings for terror financing – Kurfi on BDC involvement

Nigeria’s economic failures creating openings for terror financing – Kurfi on BDC involvement

Dr Bashir Kurfi, a lecturer in International Finance at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, says allegations linking some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators to terrorism financing are not surprising, considering the global nature of terrorism and the widespread use of foreign currencies in illegal transactions.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Wednesday, Kurfi said terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which operate across the Sahel region, depend on international financial networks to move funds.

“When you talk of terrorism, it has an international dimension. Groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP have networks across countries, so there will naturally be international movement of funds,” he said.

Commenting on reports from the United States linking some Nigerian BDC operators to suspicious financial transactions, Kurfi said BDCs could easily be used for illicit activities because they deal largely in cash and foreign currencies.

“Bureau De Change operators can become a vehicle because they handle cash and different currencies. The US dollar remains the dominant currency in international transactions, including illegal ones,” he said.

Kurfi blamed Nigeria’s weak economy and poor political leadership for the increasing preference for the dollar over the naira.

“The currency of a country is its dignity. Once it loses value and public confidence, people begin to look for alternatives,” he stated.

He also attributed the naira’s weakness to Nigeria’s heavy dependence on imports, noting that even local industries rely on imported raw materials.

The economist further linked insecurity in some parts of the country to illegal mining activities, saying mineral resources have fuelled conflicts in several African countries.

“There is a relationship between banditry and mining. In many conflict areas, valuable mineral resources help sustain violence,” he said.

Kurfi called for stronger regulation of the financial sector, improved economic policies and closer monitoring of mining activities to curb insecurity and illicit financial flows in the country.

  • Court Orders DSS To Probe VeryDarkMan Over Alleged Leak Of Coup Trial Evidence

Court Orders DSS To Probe VeryDarkMan Over Alleged Leak Of Coup Trial Evidence

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate how sensitive evidence from an ongoing alleged coup plot trial found its way onto social media.

The development followed claims by the prosecution that materials tendered before the court and served on lawyers representing the defendants were later seen circulating online through social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.

During proceedings on Tuesday, prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) informed the court that videos presented as evidence in the trial had allegedly appeared on social media. He told the court that the social media influencer was present in the courtroom and called for an investigation into how the materials became public.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik subsequently directed the DSS to investigate the alleged leak and identify anyone responsible for violating the court’s earlier witness protection orders.

The judge stated that if any evidence exists showing that protected court materials were published online, those behind the act must be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Lawyers representing the six defendants denied any involvement in the alleged leak and challenged the prosecution to formally present evidence linking anyone to the publication of the materials.

The case is part of the ongoing trial involving six men accused of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The defendants have denied the allegations against them.

Meanwhile, the court adjourned proceedings to allow the continuation of a trial-within-trial aimed at determining whether statements allegedly made by the defendants were obtained voluntarily.

The prosecution also closed its case in the trial-within-trial after presenting four witnesses who insisted that the defendants were neither tortured nor forced to make statements while in custody.

The court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming days, while ruling on the defendants’ bail applications has been fixed for July 20.

The latest development has sparked fresh debate over freedom of information, courtroom confidentiality, social media activism and the handling of sensitive national security cases in Nigeria.

World Cup 2026: I tried to convince him to play for Super Eagles – Troost-Ekong on Canada striker, David Promise

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has revealed that he made efforts to persuade Canada striker, Promise David to dedicate his international career to Nigeria rather than Canada.

The Ontario-born player considered representing Nigeria before ultimately choosing to switch allegiance to his nation of birth after playing for Nigeria’s Olympic national team in a 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania.

The Royale Union Saint-Gilloise player has made a notable impact at the ongoing tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, contributing either a goal or an assist in both matches he has played after coming off the bench.

Troost-Ekong confirmed that he engaged in discussions with the talented forward about the option of representing the Super Eagles.

The former Super Eagles captain said on SuperSports, “His rise has been meteoric, and of course, he is of Nigerian descent, so we had a conversation about playing for Nigeria. I tried my best to convince him.”
