Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the United Nations (UN) to accelerate the empowerment of women and youth across the country.
Vice President Kashim Shettima said the partnership will focus on key areas, including financial inclusion, skills development, job creation, and peace and security.
Shettima, who spoke on Thursday while receiving a delegation from the United Nations led by the Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, Felipe Paullier, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said the administration of President Bola Tinubu recognises the critical role of young people as drivers of growth and transformation, noting that they must not be treated merely as a statistical population.
“The youths are the backbone of every society’s transformation, the government is committed to policies that will convert Nigeria’s growing youth population into a demographic advantage,” Shettima said.
He also reiterated the administration’s commitment to gender equality and youth-focused development, stressing the need for stronger institutional frameworks to advance empowerment initiatives in partnership with the UN and other stakeholders.
In his words, “The anticipated demographic bulge will be transformed into demographic dividends. On behalf of the President, I reaffirm this administration’s commitment to youth development. It is almost inevitable in any dispensation. The youths are the backbone of every society’s transformation.”
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, said Paullier described Nigeria as a vibrant nation with young people at the centre of its development potential.
“Nigeria is on the right path to development, and if relevant authorities continue to place Nigerian youths at the heart of critical decisions, development and innovation will be accelerated,” he said.
Pacullier stressed that sustainable youth development must be anchored on gender equality, as well as access to education and employment opportunities.
Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has warned individuals involved in land grabbing, particularly those who employ violence, threats, or coercion to extort fees from legitimate property owners, urging them to desist or face severe consequences.
The monarch’s warning followed a wave of violent attacks reportedly carried out by land grabbers against residents of 12 villages in the Oyo West Local Government Area.
The affected communities include Itosi Yaya, Tella Omooba, Jowe, Idi-Iyalode, Bada, Ladindin, Janna, Ojutaye, Iporin Kajola, Ajibade, Laagbe, and Ariwinyo.
The disputed land spans a wide area stretching from Odo-Itosi to Odo-Ogun.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the paramount ruler noted that the Oyo metropolis is endowed with an extensive landmass, emphasising that land remains a critical, if not the most critical, factor for economic growth.
He lamented that, over time, land speculators and lawless individuals seeking unearned gains have resorted to various unlawful tactics to dispossess rightful owners of their properties.
Oba Owoade reminded perpetrators that the Real Properties Protection Law 2016 has been enacted by the Oyo State Government and is currently being enforced through a dedicated Task Force Unit.
He stated: “Under the Law, land grabbers can now be jailed for up to 15 years while those who aid and abet them will also not go scot-free.”
The statement further highlighted that land, being fundamental to shelter, commerce, and investment, has increasingly become one of the most contested assets within the Oyo metropolis.
“Rising demand has, however, fuelled a troubling surge in land grabbing, illegal transactions, and violent encroachments,” the statement said.
“For years, these activities have not only deprived individuals of their rightful properties but have also eroded investor confidence and threatened peace across communities.
“In response to the escalating crisis, the Alaafin, upon ascending the throne, declared that “enough is enough” and established a Land Committee tasked with restoring order and legality to land administration in the kingdom.
“The Committee, comprising seasoned professionals and respected elders, was inaugurated to tackle a long-standing issue that has persisted for decades.
“Its creation was prompted by widespread complaints from residents who have endured intimidation, unlawful land acquisitions, and exploitation by unscrupulous speculators.
“The Committee’s mandate is to ensure that land ownership and transactions within the metropolis are governed strictly by law rather than force.
“Its responsibilities include investigating cases of land fraud, encroachment, and unauthorised sales,“ the statement said.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment, the royal father stressed that peace, order and the protection of lives and property remain top priorities, affirming that no effort would be spared in safeguarding security across the kingdom.

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media alleging an ongoing terrorist attack in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, describing it as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Friday, April 10, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said preliminary investigations confirmed that no such incident occurred in the nation’s capital.
He explained that the video was deliberately manipulated using footage sourced from online platforms to create panic and spread misinformation.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the video was deliberately curated using misleading footage sourced from online platforms to construct a false narrative aimed at causing panic, inciting public fear, and undermining public confidence in the security architecture of the nation’s capital,” the statement read
The police further disclosed that operatives have arrested one Pam Joseph in connection with the creation and circulation of the fake video. According to the Force, the arrest followed credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations that linked the suspect to the origin and dissemination of the content.
The statement added that while citizens are entitled to freedom of expression, such rights do not extend to the spread of misinformation capable of causing public fear or threatening national security.
“The Force reiterates that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, such rights do not extend to the deliberate spread of misinformation capable of threatening public peace and national security. Members of the public are therefore advised to verify information before sharing and to refrain from engaging in activities that may incite fear or disorder,” the statement added.
Placid mentioned that the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended the controllers in charge of commands along the Lagos–Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion involving its personnel.
In a statement on Friday by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, KN Nandap, described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and a clear breach of the NIS ethics, values, and operational standards.
Nandap said the comptrollers were suspended pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation. According to the NIS, the probe is aimed at identifying all officers involved and ensuring that appropriate disciplinary measures are applied without delay.
“Consequently, the CGI has temporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties and has directed a thorough investigation surrounding these incidents, in order to identify all officers involved, and ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect,” Nandap said.
The NIS further reassured the public of its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and efficient service delivery at all entry and exit points across the country, stressing that it will not tolerate any act capable of undermining public trust or tarnishing its institutional integrity.
