US Vice President JD Vance lands in Pakistan for Iran talks

US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Islamabad on Saturday for talks with Iran that the Pakistani premier hosting the warring sides called a “make or break” effort to permanently halt weeks of fighting in the Middle East.

An Iranian delegation led by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf arrived overnight at an airbase near the capital, disembarking from the commercial plane to embrace Pakistan’s powerful army chief Asim Munir, who also shares a personal rapport with US President Donald Trump.

Munir also greeted Vance, escorting him down a red carpet at the Nur Khan air base, where US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were already waiting.

The foes still appeared to be far apart on key issues, including the opening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and were quick to express their mutual suspicion.

“We have good intentions but we do not trust,” Ghalibaf said shortly after landing, according to Iran’s state broadcaster.

“Our experience in negotiating with the Americans has always been met with failure and broken promises.”

Vance, who has been dispatched by Trump to lead the US delegation, stopped briefly in Paris for his plane to refuel before flying on to Pakistan.

“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand,” Vance said before leaving the United States.

But “if they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive”, he added.

The ceasefire is already under strain, notably from Israel’s continued strikes in Lebanon, where on Wednesday it carried out its heaviest bombardment since Hezbollah entered the Middle East war in early March, killing hundreds of people less than 48 hours after the truce came into force.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country’s down-to-the-wire mediation got both sides to the negotiating table this week, said talks would not be easy.

“An even more difficult stage lies ahead,” he said, referring to efforts to permanently end fighting that began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, sparking Iranian retaliation against Israel and across the Gulf.

“This is that stage which, in English, is called the equivalent of ‘make or break.’”

It was unclear what time the talks would get underway, though the Tasnim news agency reported Iran’s delegation would meet with Sharif at 1:00 pm.

Iranian state television made only a brief mention of the talks in its first morning news programme, with its second report dedicated to volunteers signing up to defend Iran in the event the war resumed.

    – Islamabad plays host –

Iran — which brought a more than 70-member delegation to Pakistan —  has insisted on the truce covering Lebanon and on the unfreezing of its assets for the Islamabad talks to go ahead, neither of which has materialised so far.

On the US side, President Donald Trump demanded the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as a condition for the two-week ceasefire.

The strait, through which one-fifth of the world’s crude passes, has not reopened to normal traffic, however, and Trump vowed on Friday to have it open soon “with or without” Iran’s cooperation.

He added his top priority at the Islamabad talks was to ensure the Islamic republic had “no nuclear weapon. That’s 99 percent of it.”

Security was tight in the Pakistani capital on Saturday, with a heavy police and paramilitary presence on the streets and road diversions around the “red zone” where government and diplomatic buildings are located.

The city’s main luxury hotel, which could host delegations, has been cleared of its normal well-heeled clientele.

It was not known whether the two sides would meet face-to-face, or whether they would mirror an indirect format used in Oman-mediated talks before the war.

Pakistan has formulated a team of subject matter specialists to facilitate the two sides in negotiations on navigation, nuclear and other key matters, a diplomatic source familiar with the matter told AFP.

The negotiations will be closely watched by other key regional players, with Egypt and Turkey having helped with mediation, along with China, all of which Pakistan was still coordinating closely with for the talks, the source said.

Beijing has been sought as a possible guarantor of any lasting agreement, official sources have said, with Trump confirming to AFP that China helped get Tehran to the negotiating table.

It was not clear whether China would have any direct presence during the talks or would be willing to take on a formal role.

    – Violence in Lebanon –

Complicating the path to a permanent ceasefire was Israel’s assertion that the current truce does not cover Lebanon, at odds with Iran and Pakistan’s stance.

Israeli air strikes continued in Lebanon on Friday against Iran-backed Hezbollah despite the Iranian demand that they be halted as a condition of the truce with Washington.

Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said his country will hold discussions with Lebanon’s government in Washington next week but would not discuss a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

The militant group said overnight that it had carried out drone and rocket attacks on northern Israel, as well as on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

In Tehran, a 30-year-old resident told AFP he was skeptical negotiations would be successful, describing most of what Trump says as “pure noise and nonsense.”

I Had Throat Surgery After Aljazeera Interview , I Don’t Know If The " Arrow " Came From Obidients ..Daniel Bwala

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has revealed that he recently underwent throat surgery shortly after a widely discussed interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan of Al Jazeera.

Bwala made the disclosure during an appearance on News Central’s programme, 60 Minutes with Mr Kay, aired on Friday, where he also addressed reactions to the interview and criticism from online groups.

“Eight days after the interview with Mehdi Hasan, I underwent surgery on my throat. I don’t know whether it is the ‘Obidient’ people that threw that African thing, but in any case, I’m back and strong,” he said.

He criticised a segment of social media users he described as “Obidients,” alleging that they prioritise political loyalty over national interest.

“I know the environment I come from; it’s an environment where there exists a species of ‘Trojans’ of social media called the ‘Obidient,’ who do not care about the national interest or the security of Nigeria and will do everything possible to achieve the aim of their hero, no matter the cost,” Bwala stated.

Speaking further, the presidential aide defended his performance during the interview, describing Hasan’s approach as adversarial.

“What Mehdi Hasan did was what we call opposition-style journalism, where you play the role of the opposition. In that interview, Mehdi sought to elicit information from me to discredit the government, but he could not,” he said.

Bwala explained that much of the interview focused on his past criticisms of the Tinubu administration while he was in the opposition, which he acknowledged but sought to move past.

“In the first 15 minutes, he started by asking me to answer questions relating to things I said about President Tinubu when I was in the opposition.

“Repeatedly, I admitted to them — I even said I had said more than what he mentioned — but I asked that we move on to the purpose of the interview,” he said.

He added that he cautioned the interviewer against persisting on the same line of questioning.

“He continued doing it, and at a point, I warned him that if he kept going in that direction, I would deny it. He continued, and that was why I kept denying,” Bwala said.

It had earlier been reported that the interview, which was released on social media, sparked immediate backlash, particularly on X, where clips went viral, and critics described Bwala’s outing as an embarrassment.

Hasan repeatedly confronted Bwala with his past statements in which he had described President Tinubu as a drug baron, corrupt, and unfit to lead—remarks he made before his 2023 defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

When Bwala denied making some of the statements, Hasan produced video evidence, triggering fresh ridicule online.

Hasan also pressed him on Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, citing reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, while Bwala was unable to counter the figures with data of his own.

  • 2027: There will be no zoning in Nasarawa – Guber aspirant, Adamu

2027: There will be no zoning in Nasarawa – Guber aspirant, Adamu

There will be no zoning arrangement for the Nasarawa State governorship seat ahead of the 2027 election, a former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has said.

Adamu, who is a governorship aspirant under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), also declared that he remains the candidate to beat in the state.

The former IGP hails from Nasarawa South, but the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Sule, is said to be inclined towards having his successor emerge from Nasarawa West.

According to Adamu, there would be no consensus arrangement in the selection of the governorship candidate in the state. He said the direct primaries option affords aspirants a level playing field.

He explained, “The electorate will be allowed to pick their candidate, unlike in the indirect primaries system where delegates could be influenced against a candidate.”

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Adamu reiterated that there is nothing like zoning in Nasarawa, stressing that since 1999, when democratic rule returned, the state has never zoned the governorship seat.

He further explained that under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and the incumbent APC, zoning of the governorship seat has never worked.

Adamu said that while the governor in his wisdom wants to support somebody from Nasarawa West, his zone, Nasarawa South, is also saying it should be left open.

He added that although he does not expect any patronage from the governor, the electorate will determine who emerges come 2027. He pointed out that he has gone to the 147 wards in the state and has seen their problems, and told them to work together and focus on Nasarawa State.

He further said that they always manipulate through indirect primaries, expressing delight that the threat has been removed and nobody can take his delegates and keep them somewhere and tell them to vote a certain way.

Adamu explained that consensus would never take place in Nasarawa State when more than one person have said they do not want it, assuring that they will be vigilant in order to make sure that the primaries are free and fair.

Speaking further, Adamu lamented the state of the capital, Lafia, noting that for a long time, it has not been given the priority it deserves, lamenting that it still looks like a glorified local government headquarters, as previous administrations did not prioritise the city as a capital.

FG orders withdrawal of passports from citizens who renounce nationality

    By Omeiza Ajayi

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS to immediately withdraw and deactivate passports held by individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

The directive targets Nigerians whose renunciation requests have been officially approved by the President, barring them from continuing to hold or use Nigerian travel documents following the completion of that process.

Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Interior, Alao Babatunde, said the minister grounded the policy in Section 29, subsections (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which provides that; “Any citizen of Nigeria of full age who wishes to renounce his Nigerian citizenship shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation.

“The President shall cause the declaration made under subsection (1) of this section to be registered and upon such registration, the person who made the declaration shall cease to be a citizen of Nigeria.”

Tunji-Ojo stated that once a person loses Nigerian citizenship, they are no longer entitled to carry any sovereign document of the state, including its passport.

The directive forms part of a broader set of passport and visa reforms the Ministry of Interior has pursued in recent years. The Minister framed the move as an effort to strengthen border security, curb identity fraud, and preserve the integrity of Nigerian citizenship.

“We will continue to strengthen systems that secure Nigeria’s borders, prevent identity fraud, preserve the sanctity of Nigerian citizenship, and facilitate legitimate travel while preventing unauthorized or ineligible access,” he said.

Video: Navy detains officers over Bayelsa clash with soldiers during Tinubu’s visit

The altercation, which circulated widely online, was captured in a 53-second video showing uniformed officers engaged in a heated exchange.

In the clip, a driver operating a Hilux vehicle labelled “Naval Police” is seen stepping out to confront another driver, leading to a verbal dispute.

Shortly after returning to his vehicle, a soldier armed with a rifle approached and struck the Naval Police driver, triggering a violent scuffle.

The incident quickly escalated into a broader fight, with personnel from both sides trading blows while onlookers watched in shock.

The clash reportedly happened as the President was departing the venue of an official engagement in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the confrontation had not been established.

Responding to the development on Saturday via his X account, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abi Folorunso, confirmed that those involved are now in custody and facing disciplinary action.

US, Iran peace talk: Strait of Hormuz to reopen ‘soon’ – Trump

The United States, US, President Donald Trump has said the Strait of Hormuz will reopen “fairly soon,” with or without Iran’s cooperation, as tensions over the strategic waterway continue to disrupt global energy supplies.

Speaking ahead of planned talks between US and Iranian officials in Pakistan, Trump said Washington is prepared to act, adding that other countries are also willing to support efforts to restore access.

Addressing journalists before boarding Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Camp Springs, Maryland, Trump said: “It won’t be easy.

“I would say this: We will have that open fairly soon.”

Although he did not outline specific steps the US would take to reopen the vital shipping route, Trump made it clear that Washington would not accept any attempt by Iran to impose fees on vessels passing through the strait.

Tehran has suggested it may introduce charges for safe passage even if an agreement is reached to end hostilities.

“If they are doing that, we’re not going to let that happen,” he said.

The US president also stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains the central objective of any potential deal, noting that reopening the strait would follow naturally from such an agreement.

“No nuclear weapons, that’s 99 percent of it,” Trump said.

“The strait will open up,” he added, “If we just left, otherwise they make no money.”

  • ‘Aviation growth in Africa stifled by policy, poor economics’

‘Aviation growth in Africa stifled by policy, poor economics’

    By Dickson Omobola

Chief Executive Officer of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa, AASA, Aaron Munetsi, has expressed concern over the state of aviation in Africa, saying despite the continent’s vast population and landmass, its contribution to global aviation remains marginal.

Munetsi fingered regulatory bottlenecks and weak economic fundamentals as major factors responsible for Africa’s underperforming aviation sector.

Referencing data from the International Air Transport Association, IATA, and the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, he said Africa operates some of the oldest aircraft globally and maintains one of the smallest fleets, despite a population of about 1.4 billion people spread across 31 million square kilometres.

He spoke at the two-day Nigerian Aircraft Acquisition and Investment Summit, NAAIS, organised by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development in Lagos.

His words: “According to statistics from IATA and ICAO, we have the oldest aircraft in the world and we have the smallest fleet in the world. This is a continent of 1.4 billion people, 31 million square kilometres and we are endowed with so much wealth. If you think about it, 1.4 billion people, yet our contribution to our global aviation is only two per cent. With all these resources, then something must be wrong somewhere.

”When you think about the actual commercial aircraft acquisition on the continent, with 52 national airlines, flag carriers on the continent, only seven are fully operational of the 52, and of these seven, only one is profitable. When you compare the profitability of African airlines per passenger, we are getting just less than 1 US dollar. That’s where the challenge is when it comes to aircraft acquisition because the economics are not working. Why are they not working? I think the regulatory framework is our biggest challenge. I hear the story that Africa has the oldest number of aircraft.

“It does not surprise me, but at the same time, I am not alarmed because as long as the aircraft is maintained, it is still safe. Go to the United States and you will see how many old …are still flying.

”So, we should not cripple ourselves by embracing regulations that are actually not serving us. The number of aircraft on the continent is just less than the thousands that are in full commercial use. It is less than a thousand. Does anyone know how many aircraft Delta has? 1,500.

”The whole continent, we have less than a thousand aircraft. Now, if we are really serious about this, we applaud the initiative that has been taken here in Nigeria, because that is where we need to start. If we are serious about aviation, we need to start asking how we can actually bridge the gap in terms of acquisition of aircraft in Africa.”

  • Osun APC dismisses lawmaker’s claims over INEC staff transfer

Osun APC dismisses lawmaker’s claims over INEC staff transfer

All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has criticised the state House of Assembly over allegations linking a former governor to recent staff movements within the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In a statement issued on Thursday, by Kola Olabisi, the Osun APC Director of Media and Information, the party described the claims by lawmakers led by Speaker Adewale Egbedun as unfounded, following a press briefing held in Osogbo earlier in the day.

The Assembly had alleged that Gboyega Oyetola, now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, was behind what it described as internal operational changes within INEC in the state.

Responding, the APC maintained that “such staff redeployments fall strictly within the statutory responsibilities of the electoral body and are guided by existing electoral laws.

“Routine administrative actions of INEC should not be misconstrued or politicised. Such transfers have occurred previously without controversy.”

The party stated that it had no involvement in the internal affairs of INEC and was unaware of the specific staff movement referenced by the lawmakers.

“We are not even aware that such action has taken place, and we are not concerned with the internal operations of the commission,” the APC said.

The statement also dismissed the allegation against Oyetola as lacking evidence, stressing that “it is a fundamental principle that whoever makes an allegation must provide proof.”

The APC accused the lawmakers of diverting attention from governance issues, suggesting that their actions were politically motivated ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The party linked the controversy to broader political developments in the state, noting that preparations for the election were intensifying among various stakeholders.

It reaffirmed its support for its governorship candidate, stating that efforts were ongoing to secure electoral victory through lawful means.

“Oyetola and other party members remain committed to working within the law to ensure success at the polls,” the statement added.

The APC also urged the public to disregard the allegations, describing them as “baseless and unsupported by any empirical evidence.”

Reiterating its position, the party maintained that INEC should be allowed to carry out its duties independently, without external interference or political pressure.

The Osun State House of Assembly on Thursday raised concerns over recent administrative changes within the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, warning that the developments could affect the integrity of forthcoming elections in the state.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday, Speaker of the Assembly, Adewale Egbedun on behalf of lawmakers said the redeployment of Dr Mutiu Agboke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun had drawn attention, particularly as it appeared sudden and without clear justification.

The Assembly disclosed that it had also received reports suggesting that further redeployments of key electoral personnel were being considered, including officials such as Administrative Secretaries, Electoral Officers, Assistant Electoral Officers and ICT staff across the state.

DAILY POST also reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC redeployed its Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke.

The redeployment came amid petitions to the electoral umpire’s chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan over alleged partisanship.

DAILY POST gathered that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, demanded for Agboke’s redeployment ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
