Comedian, Basketmouth’s ex-wife, Elsie Okpocha, has threatened to sue anyone spreading false news about her failed marriage.

DAILY POST reports that the estranged couple got married in November 2010 and broke up in 2022 December.

But the claims of the paternity fraud surfaced on social media a month ago after a blog reported that Basketmouth during an interview allegedly disclosed that DNA results of their first child led to their divorce.

Reacting to the controversy on Saturday in a letter by her legal representative, Primeview Legal, Elsie denied the paternity fraud allegation and warned the public to desist from “false and unfounded” publications.

She further threatened to sue any individual or blogs found guilty of spreading such news for defamation, and invasion of privacy.

Expressing concerns over the psychological effects of such reports on her first child, she said in the legal letter shared on her Instagram page “some innocent members of the public may take such publications as the true state of things in the marriage and begin to bully their son on and off social media spaces with the consequential psychological trauma that will be inflicted on him, hence this intervention.”

INEC denies Chairman’s alleged X account, warns against fake posts

    By Emmanuel Okogba

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter).

In a statement signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, the Commission described the allegation as “entirely baseless, a total fabrication, and a figment of the imagination of its purveyors.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X. He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity,” the statement read.

INEC said the contrived post was “a desperate attempt to impugn the integrity and neutrality of the Chairman at a critical period when the Commission is focused on significant electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls. It is a needless distraction designed to stir public distrust in the electoral umpire.”

The Commission also warned that cybercriminals have previously created fake accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. “We wish to place it on record that several of such fraudulent accounts had been identified and reported to security agencies in the past. This latest fabrication is merely a continuation of a criminal pattern aimed at exploiting the Commission’s profile for illicit gains,” it said.

INEC vowed to pursue legal action against those behind the misinformation. “The Commission will not fold its arms while the character of its leadership is being assassinated by digital imposters and mischief-makers. We wish to notify the public that we are working in close collaboration with relevant security agencies and cyber-intelligence units to track and identify the individuals or groups behind this identity theft and misinformation. Let it be clearly understood that the Commission will ensure that these imposters face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.

It further stressed: “Identity theft and the dissemination of deepfake or forged social media interactions are criminal offenses under the Cybercrimes Act. Those responsible for this mischief will be tracked and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others who believe the digital space is a safe haven for criminality.”

The Commission urged Nigerians to disregard the falsehood, noting: “We will continue to disseminate official information regarding the Commission and the Chairman’s activities only through our verified institutional channels and formal press statements.”

INEC concluded by reaffirming its commitment: “The Commission remains undeterred and fully committed to its mandate of delivering free, fair, and credible elections for all Nigerians.”

U.S. Says It Has Begun Clearing Mines From Hormuz

The United States Central Command says it has launched mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways, as two U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers conducted operations in the region on Saturday.

USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy transited the strait and operated in the Arabian Gulf as part of what CENTCOM described as a broader mission aimed at clearing sea mines it alleges were previously laid by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Iran has not publicly responded to the claim.

“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, handling roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil exports. It serves as an essential trade corridor linking the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and remains central to regional and global economic stability.

CENTCOM officials said additional U.S. forces, including underwater drones, will join the clearance effort in the coming days.

The initiative forms part of what Washington describes as broader stabilisation measures in the area following U.S. military operations against Iranian targets earlier this year and a fragile ceasefire that has since taken hold.

The U.S. Navy’s presence in the strait is part of what Washington calls its commitment to freedom of navigation and keeping key sea lanes open for international shipping.

Independent verification of the mine-clearing operations was not immediately available.

  • Abia Moves To Re-Gazette Autonomous Communities, Tackle Leadership Disputes

Abia Moves To Re-Gazette Autonomous Communities, Tackle Leadership Disputes

The Abia State Government has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive review and re-gazetting of autonomous communities across the state in order to restore order, reduce conflicts, and promote peace.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, during a statewide meeting of Presidents General of Town and Development Unions held on Saturday at the JAAC Secretariat in Umuahia.

Nwachukwu explained that the review is long overdue. The last gazetting exercise was carried out about 11 years ago, whereas such exercises are expected to take place every 10 years.

He highlighted several irregularities causing confusion and disputes, including:
One village being split into two autonomous communities, Certain families or kindreds from one village being placed in a different community, Traditional rulers losing parts of their domain to other rulers, effectively making them subjects in their own territory.

“These anomalies, have led to persistent crises, with his office receiving no fewer than 50 petitions weekly.

“The issues also prompted the state government to establish conflict management and mediation centres in all local government areas,” he said.

The Commissioner further announced that the government intends to institutionalize Town and Development Unions by creating a statewide database to properly document and recognize their leaders.

“just as with traditional ruler selections, multiple claimants often emerge and expect official recognition, leading to chaos,” he said.

The new framework aims to streamline the process, ensure proper documentation, and stop such irregularities for the overall progress of the state.

Nwachukwu emphasized that the government has no interest in imposing leaders on any community. Instead, communities must follow their own established processes and select the best individuals as leaders. He clarified the distinct roles to prevent conflicts.

“Traditional rulers serve as custodians of culture and tradition, symbols of unity and authority, and provide moral leadership.

“Presidents General and Community Development Chairmen act as administrative and development drivers, coordinating town union activities, mobilizing people for development projects, and serving as the interface between the community and the government,” he explained.

The Commissioner stressed that there should be no rivalry between the two institutions, but rather collaboration for the sake of community progress.

He urged the union leaders to mobilize citizens for civic duties and ensure all leadership activities align with government frameworks.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (rtd.), described the meeting as a novel and important initiative.

He reminded participants that security is a collective responsibility and called for timely sharing of security information.

“Security is a collective responsibility and it is based on information. We must take security and security reports very seriously by ensuring timely information sharing,” Uba said.

Other speakers, including the Mayor of Umunneochi LGA, Hon. Sunday Afuruobi, and representatives of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, pledged their support for collaboration between traditional rulers and development unions to foster community growth.

Earlier In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lady Oge Maduka, said the meeting signals the beginning of a new era in the state.

“This meeting marks the beginning of a new chapter in the government’s deliberate efforts to strengthen grassroots governance, improve community coordination, and foster a more organised framework for leadership and development at the grassroots level,” she said.

Speaking with the press, several Presidents General — including Dr. Greene Nwoha (Oro-Ibere, Ikwuano LGA), Chief Yuccee Ottah Uwah (Abiriba Communal Improvement Union, Ohafia LGA), and Hon. Chukwudi Edward Egwuonwu (Ozuitem, Bende LGA) — commended Governor Alex Otti for convening the meeting, describing it as the first of its kind.

They expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly enhance security, peace, and overall development in Abia State.

THE WHISTLER reports that this move represents a decisive step by the Abia State Government to organize and strengthen grassroots institutions for more effective and sustainable community development.
