EPL: Why we’re doing so good at end of season – Man City manager, Guardiola

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has given a reason his team is doing so well at the end of the season.

The Premier League season will end next month, and Man City have picked up good form.

Guardiola’s side is yet to concede a goal in their last three matches across all competitions.

They defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final, thrashed Liverpool 4-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final and also defeated Chelsea 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Cityzens are six points behind Arsenal on the Premier League table with a game in hand.

Speaking on why Man City are so good at the end of the season, Guardiola said at his post-match interview after his team defeated Chelsea (as quoted by Fabrizio Romano): “The sun. No, no, I’m not joking.

“In Manchester, there is never sun. If there were sun in November, we would be Premier League champions in January. It’s the sun, honestly. The mood is better.”

  • Nigeria Earned Over N174.3tn From Oil, Gas Despite Output Challenges

Nigeria Earned Over N174.3tn From Oil, Gas Despite Output Challenges

…Crude Earnings Fall 14% As Production Lags Targets

…Refining Gains Cut Imports, Boost Export Earnings

Nigeria generated a total of $143.51bn from crude oil, natural gas and refined petroleum product exports between 2023 and 2025, highlighting the continued centrality of the hydrocarbon sector to the country’s external earnings despite shifting trade dynamics.

The amount when converted to the naira during the three year period translates to about N174.35tn.

THE WHISTLER analysis of the figures showed that the country earned $49.83bn in 2023. This translates to N31.45tn based on an average exchange rate of N633 to a dollar in 2023.

In 2024, the data showed that Nigeria earned $45.51bn which is about N70.9tn based on an average exchange rate of N1472 to a dollar during the year under review.

In the 2015 fiscal year, the earnings rose to $48.17bn (N72tn) based on an average exchange rate of N1,479 to a dollar dollar) according to data compiled from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and reviewed by THE WHISTLER.

Despite the strong cumulative earnings, Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy came under renewed pressure in 2025 as crude oil export receipts declined sharply, raising concerns about fiscal stability and the resilience of the external sector.

The CBN data indicated that crude oil export earnings dropped by $5.31bn year-on-year, falling from $36.85bn in 2024 to $31.54bn in 2025. The 14.41 per cent decline reflects persistent production challenges, volatility in global oil prices, and structural inefficiencies within the petroleum industry.

The drop in crude earnings weighed on Nigeria’s current account position, with the surplus narrowing to $14.04bn in 2025 from $19.03bn recorded in 2024.

This trend underscores the continued reliance on crude oil exports as a major source of foreign exchange inflows, even as diversification efforts gradually gain traction.

Industry analysts say the development exposes long-standing structural vulnerabilities in the economy. Disruptions ranging from pipeline vandalism and oil theft to fluctuating global prices continue to have outsized effects on government revenues and the balance of payments.

However, the decline in crude export earnings is unfolding alongside a notable transformation in Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain, particularly in domestic refining capacity.

The operational ramp-up of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is beginning to alter traditional trade patterns. Instead of exporting crude and importing refined products, Nigeria is increasingly processing crude locally and exporting refined petroleum products to international markets.

This shift is already reflected in trade performance. The country’s goods account recorded a higher surplus of $14.51bn in 2025, compared to $13.17bn in 2024, supported largely by increased exports of refined products.

The Dangote refinery alone accounted for exports valued at $5.85bn in 2025, signalling the growing importance of value-added petroleum products in Nigeria’s export mix.

At the same time, improved domestic refining significantly reduced reliance on fuel imports. Refined petroleum imports declined to $10bn in 2025 from $14.06bn in 2024, representing a 28.88 per cent drop. This helped ease pressure on foreign exchange demand and supported relative stability in the external sector.

Nonetheless, underlying pressures persist. Non-oil imports rose by 13.60 per cent to $29.24bn, reflecting sustained demand for foreign goods and services and highlighting the slow pace of diversification in the non-oil economy.

External obligations also intensified during the period. Net service outflows increased to $14.58bn in 2025, driven by higher spending on transportation, travel and insurance.

Similarly, outflows under the primary income account surged by 60.88 per cent to $9.09bn, largely due to increased dividend repatriation and interest payments to foreign investors.

These pressures were partly offset by inflows from remittances and other secondary income sources, which stood at $23.20bn, although slightly lower than the $24.88bn recorded in 2024. Remittances continue to serve as a critical buffer for the country’s external sector.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has intensified calls for increased oil production to take advantage of evolving global market conditions.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, urged operators to scale up output, describing Nigeria as a strategic destination for oil and gas investments capable of addressing emerging global supply gaps.

He called for the adoption of quick-win strategies, including re-entry programmes and in-field well development, to boost production in the short term.

Nigeria’s crude oil production rose marginally to 1.459 million barrels per day in January 2026 from 1.422 million bpd in December 2025. However, output has remained below the 1.5 million bpd quota set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for six consecutive months.

Production levels in February fluctuated between 1.31 million and 1.46 million bpd amid persistent challenges such as oil theft, pipeline vandalism and underinvestment in the Niger Delta, remaining well below the government’s 2 million bpd target.

Lokpobiri also urged oil companies to accelerate Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) to boost investor confidence and sustain growth momentum in the sector.

CJF condemns abduction of Sapele Council Chairman, Abeke

A group under the auspices of Concerned Journalists Forum (CJF), Nigeria, on Sunday, condemned in strong terms the recent abduction of the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Hon. Bright Afure Abeke by gunmen, on Friday.

This is contained in a statement by CJF National Chairman, Comrade Emeka Nwokocha and the Secretary, Comrade Celestine Ukah.

They said the kidnappers had a field day while their operation lasted.

CJF expressed worry about worsening crime rate in Delta State, describing it as a scary development.

CJF also noted with dismay that the safety of Deltans were “oftentimes discussed and assured on symposiums and speech-making sessions, but not much action is practically put in place to protect lives and property of Deltans as guaranteed by Section 14(2b) of the 1999 constitution, as amended”.

It reiterated its concern about the erosion of public trust for government institutions whose responsibility is to protect the lives and properties of the citizens.

It called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to demand better commitment from the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi to rid the state of criminal elements whose murderous activities had gotten worse across the state in recent months.

Police Arrest Suspect Who Robbed Job Seekers In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged robbery incident in which job seekers were lured to a fake interview in the Magodo area of the state and dispossessed of their valuables.

The arrest follows a viral video last week that raised concern on social media over the rising threat of sophisticated scams targeting desperate applicants.

In the video shared by X user @General_Somto on April 10, applicants could be seen scattered, with a few putting their hands on their heads.

One of the victims could be heard recounting the experience, warning others to be cautious of fraudulent job offers.

“Nigerians, let’s be careful out there… Not all job offers are legit. We went for a job interview in Magodo, Lagos only to be robbed. They took our phones, money, and everything we had on us,” she said.

According to details shared in the comments section of the video, the setup appeared professional and trustworthy at first.

The interview was held in an organised environment, and nothing initially raised suspicion.

However, victims claimed they were asked to step out briefly, only to return and discover that their personal belongings—including mobile phones, cash, and other valuables—had been taken.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued via its X handle on Sunday, saying the matter is under investigation.

“The Command confirms that the incident captured in the viral video is under investigation. The case was reported at about 11:00 p.m. on 09/04/2026.

“One suspect is currently in Police custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects and bring all those involved to justice.”

The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of job offers before attending interviews, especially those advertised online.

It advised job seekers to confirm company details through official channels, avoid isolated or unverified venues, and inform trusted contacts before attending interviews.

Revealed: How Notorious Cult Leader " Yinka Agali " Was Assassinated In Lagos

A suspected leader of the Buccaneers cult group in Surulere, Lagos, Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as Yinka Agali, has been shot dead.

Agali was killed on Saturday night, April 11, 2026, in the Iponri area of Surulere. He was regarded as a prominent and influential figure within the group in the area.

Reports indicated that he was shot while driving in the Iponri axis. Some accounts linked the incident to rivalry between cult groups, while others suggested possible political undertones ahead of local elections.

Videos circulating on social media indicated that the deceased had political links with the All Progressives Congress.

Responding to enquiries, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that a gunshot was reported around 11:30 p.m. on April 11 near the National Stadium Bridge towards Iponri. A patrol team from Surulere Division moved to the scene and found the victim inside an unregistered white Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 with gunshot wounds.

Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the victim was rushed to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead and his body deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

She added that the assailants abandoned an unregistered black Ford Edge and fled in another vehicle. Both vehicles have been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects.

Adebisi also said the family of the deceased has retrieved the body and indicated that it is not pursuing a case.
