Ghanaian Footballer Killed In Armed Robbery Attack

A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed after armed robbers attacked his team on the way back from an away fixture on Sunday, the Ghana Football Association said Monday.

Berekum Chelsea FC said in a statement that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” fired on the team bus and forced the players to take cover in the bushes.

The robbery, according to Ghana police, occurred around 10:30 pm local time (2230 GMT) along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District in the southern region of Ashanti.

Police said Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and died in hospital while receiving treatment.

“Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of 4,500.00 cedis ($408),” the police said in a statement.

The Ghana Football Association described the incident as “tragic” and a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” it said in a statement.

The 20-year-old forward joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the beginning of the year.

He played 13 games and scored two goals for the club, according to local media.

Chioma Nweze mourns Bishop Chukwu, calls him defender of Christian faith

The Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Southeast Engagement, Barr Chioma Nweze, has said that she was thrown into mourning when she received the news of the demise of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing the departed Bishop as a defender of the Christian faith.

In her message to the Catholic Church and the people of Ebonyi State on Monday in Abakaliki, Barr. Nweze noted that Bishop Chukwu was a devoted Christian whose life exemplified his faith and belief in God, adding that he devoted his life to working for the progress and spread of the gospel and that his commitment to working in the Lord’s vineyard stood him out as a messenger of God Almighty.

She said that the passing of Bishop Chukwu represents not only the loss of a spiritual leader but also that of a moral compass and a father figure to the faithful across the Diocese and the wider Christian community.

She added that he will forever be remembered as a man of vision, discipline, and uncommon patriotism who laid a solid socioeconomic and religious foundation for Catholic faithful even beyond.

She further stated that when he was ordained Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Bishop Chukwu took up the historic responsibility of giving direction, hope, and administrative structure to serve mankind.

“With courage, foresight, hindsight, and selflessness, he nurtured the dreams of expanding the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to the hinterland,” she stated.

“His commitment to public service, his humility in leadership, and his passion for national unity and growth of the Church stood as enduring legacies that will continue to inspire generations of Ebonyians, including me.”

Barr Nweze noted that the story of Catholic Church progress cannot be told without acknowledging the dire sacrifices and statesmanship of the late Bishop Chukwu.

“We are going to miss you so very much, and the relationship you shared with everyone has created a vacuum we do not know how to fill.”

  • Tinubu repositioning Kano economically despite opposition attacks – Yilwatda

Tinubu repositioning Kano economically despite opposition attacks – Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has said that while the opposition political parties are obsessed with insults and attacks on the government, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pursuing a coordinated economic agenda designed to reposition Kano State as a leading industrial and commercial centre in Northern Nigeria and a major gateway for trade across West Africa.

In a statement signed by Mr Abimbola Tooki, his special adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, the National Chairman said President Tinubu’s strategic economic vision is to make Kano the largest business and industrial hub in Nigeria after Lagos, while establishing it as the principal gateway for trade into the Sahel and Francophone West Africa.

He maintained that the administration’s broader economic agenda would significantly alter Nigeria’s development trajectory by strengthening regional balance and expanding industrial capacity across the North.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not simply carrying out development projects in Kano; he is reshaping the economic future of Northern Nigeria through Kano,” adding that the city remains “the central commercial hub of the North and a strategic link to the wider West African trade network.” the statement said.

Yilwatda pointed to several ongoing federal projects as evidence of the administration’s commitment, including the Kaduna–Kano standard gauge railway, which he said would connect Kano to Abuja and other parts of the country, enhancing the movement of goods and passengers.

He argued that revitalising the state’s industrial base would help reduce dependence on Lagos by creating another major economic powerhouse in the country.

He added that, “reviving Kano is synonymous with reviving Northern industry,” stressing that the administration is implementing an integrated infrastructure model that combines rail, energy, transport, and industrial development.

The APC chairman also criticised opposition parties, accusing them of focusing on political attacks rather than offering alternative development ideas. He said, “While President Tinubu is building the infrastructure backbone that will transform the North for generations, the opposition is preoccupied with politics and personal ambition rather than national development.”

He said the opposition parties were obsessed with insults, propaganda and power politics rather than national development.

“They offer no ideas, no blueprint, no alternative vision. Their only manifesto is to insult the APC and attack every development initiative because they lack the capacity to think beyond politics.” he emphasized.

El-Rufai arrives court in Kaduna as trial resumes

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday appeared before the Kaduna State High Court as his trial, filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), continued.

Shortly before entering the courtroom, he was heard discussing the upcoming African Democratic Congress national convention slated for Tuesday.

“So tomorrow is our convention, right?” El-Rufai asked.

“Insha Allah (God willing),” the associate replied.

El-Rufai is being tried alongside Amadu Sule on several charges, including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

In a separate case before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, also initiated by the ICPC, he faces a 10-count charge involving alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud totaling ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.

He has consistently denied all allegations.

Since returning from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12, 2026, the former governor has been entangled in multiple legal proceedings.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initially detained him before transferring him to the ICPC’s custody.

El-Rufai was later granted temporary release on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial and subsequently returned to custody.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna had earlier scheduled his bail hearing for April 14, coinciding with the ADC convention.

Meanwhile, the ADC has alleged that the prosecution is politically motivated, a claim the ruling All Progressive Congress has rejected.

  • SEC orders immediate freeze on assets of 13 firms over terrorism financing in Nigeria

SEC orders immediate freeze on assets of 13 firms over terrorism financing in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, has directed the immediate freezing of assets belonging to 13 capital market entities suspected of links to terrorism financing.

The action follows the designation of 10 individuals and three organizations on the Nigeria Sanctions List by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee. In a directive titled “Commission’s Sweeping Compliance Directive Issued to Capital Market Operators,” the SEC said the decision aligns with provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

According to the Commission, the law mandates the freezing of all funds, assets, and economic resources associated with designated persons and entities without prior notice.

The SEC disclosed that capital market operators and stakeholders have been formally notified of the development, noting that the Nigeria Sanctions Committee approved the inclusion of the affected individuals and entities for sanctions, including asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes.

Operators have been instructed to immediately identify and freeze all accounts linked to those listed, halt any ongoing or future transactions, and report both frozen assets and attempted dealings to the Sanctions Committee Secretariat.

Further details revealed that several of the individuals had previously been convicted by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal in April 2019 for financing terrorism tied to Boko Haram. The convictions stemmed from allegations of raising funds in Dubai and transferring them to Nigeria to support terrorist activities, with penalties ranging from 10-year jail terms to life imprisonment.

The SEC noted that the case underscores how corporate entities can be used as channels for illicit financial flows, stressing the need for tighter scrutiny across the financial system.

It added that the asset freeze measure is preventive, aimed at disrupting funding networks for terrorism before resources can be deployed.

The Commission warned that failure to comply with the directive could attract severe consequences, including civil and criminal penalties, as well as reputational risks for affected institutions.

The directive also extends to Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs), reflecting a broader enforcement strategy across Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing violations, the SEC urged market operators to strengthen real-time monitoring systems, ensure effective name screening, and act swiftly without prior notice to affected clients.

It cautioned that non-compliance could undermine the credibility of firms both locally and internationally.

“This highlights a pattern where corporate vehicles are used as channels for financial flows, reinforcing the need for heightened scrutiny of business entities within the financial system.

“The SEC also emphasized that the asset-freezing mechanism is preventive rather than punitive, designed to disrupt financial support systems for terrorism before funds can be deployed.

“The implications for non-compliance are severe, including both civil and criminal liabilities, as well as reputational damage for institutions found wanting.

“For market operators, the trading systems must be capable of rapid name screening, asset tracing, and reporting, while compliance teams are expected to act without delay or prior notice to affected clients,” SEC stated.

  • Marie-Louise Eta, Carolina, others – Five female coaches of male football teams

Marie-Louise Eta, Carolina, others – Five female coaches of male football teams

    By Enitan Abdultawab

Male managers are often the first pick for male football teams. However, there have been a few female managers who have headed male football clubs.

Below are the top five (5) female coaches to have managed clubs in Europe’s top-flight clubs.

    Marie-Louise Eta (Germany)
Eta was named interim head coach of Union Berlin’s men’s team on Sunday, April 12, following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after a disappointing defeat to FC Heidenheim. Her appointment is a landmark moment, as she becomes the first woman to manage a men’s side in the history of the Bundesliga.

Having spent years working within Union Berlin’s youth system and later integrating into the senior coaching setup, Eta’s rise reflects both continuity and trust within the club. She now takes charge for the remainder of the season, with Union Berlin sitting mid-table and still navigating an uncertain finish to their campaign.

    Carolina Morace (Italy)
One of the earliest trailblazers was Carolina Morace, who took charge of Italian side Viterbese in 1999, becoming one of the first women to manage a professional men’s team in Europe. Beyond club football, Morace built a distinguished coaching career with women’s national teams, including Canada and Italy, and has remained a vocal advocate for greater female representation in coaching.

    Helena Costa (France)
In France, Helena Costa made headlines in 2014 when she was appointed manager of Clermont Foot, marking the first time a woman led a professional men’s team in the country. However, her tenure was short-lived, as she resigned within weeks, citing a lack of support and recognition from within the club.

    Corinne Diacre (France)
Costa’s departure opened the door for Corinne Diacre, who stepped in to lead Clermont Foot. Diacre later went on to manage the French women’s national team, though her time there ended in 2023 following internal disputes that highlighted the pressures often faced by women in leadership roles.

    Sabrina Wittmann (Germany)
More recently, Sabrina Wittmann has also taken on a prominent role in men’s football, serving as interim head coach at German club Ingolstadt. Wittmann has spoken about the challenge of balancing expectations as a representative of women in the sport while striving to be judged purely on her coaching abilities.
