IGP , NYSC DG Meet, To Strengthen Ties For Improved Corps Security

The National Youth Service Corps and the Nigerian Police Force have renewed their commitment to strengthen the existing synergy between both agencies towards enhancing the security of Corps Members nationwide.

The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stated this when he paid a courtesy visit on the Inspector General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

While congratulating Disu on his appointment, General Nafiu commended the IGP on the recent inauguration of his crack team.

The Director General added that the Police has been instrumental to the success of NYSC activities and programmes since its inception.

Nafiu appealed to the Police for maximum security of the Corps Members and NYSC officials within and outside the Orientation Camps.

He equally solicited for protection of the Corps Members and their properties, including the Corps Lodges as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.

Speaking further, the Director General said the NYSC Act stipulates that Members of the Armed Forces and paramilitary agencies are exempted from National Service and so he would like to interface with the Management of the Police Academy to enable the NYSC issue certificates of exemption to graduates of the institution as is statutory.

In his response, the IGP said the Police would continue to secure the Scheme, adding that the addresses of all the Corps Lodges were available with the Police to take appropriate action as occasion demands.

He said the issue of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, was a welcome development, while he assured the DG of more cooperation from the Police to the NYSC.

Pipeline Contract: Don’t allow violence return to Niger Delta – Group cautions Tinubu, NASS

The United Niger Delta Congress has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing pipeline surveillance contracts crisis in the Niger Delta and not allow the region return to the days of violence.

The association made the call in reaction to the recent vote of confidence passed on one of the major pipeline contractors in the region by the Senate and House of Reps Committees.

The association described the federal lawmakers’ action as not only misguided, but a grave overreach of legislative authority.

“The National Assembly does not possess the constitutional or statutory mandate to award, renew, or endorse such contracts,” it said IN a press statement read by Julius Malam-Obi, its President and Emaluji, Secretary General in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Even more troubling is the contradiction of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, a landmark legislation enacted by the same National Assembly,” the added.

“The PIA, particularly Chapter 3, Section 257, explicitly recognizes Host Communities as central stakeholders in the protection and management of oil and gas assets within their domains.

“Any attempt to concentrate pipeline surveillance responsibilities in a monopolistic structure directly violates both the letter and spirit of this law.

“What is unfolding is not governance, it is economic capture. It is domination. It is the systematic exclusion of the very ethnic nations whose land sustains the nation’s wealth. The monopolization of N2.1 trillion pipeline surveillance contracts is not merely unfair; it is a dangerous provocation and a ticking time bomb in a region with a long history of struggle for justice and inclusion,” it said.

It added that it was against the law to award the protection of pipelines and oil assets located in one ethnic nationality to an entity from another, while the indigenes become mere spectators.

“This is a recipe for crisis of monumental proportions and a direct violation of the provisions of the PIA,” the group said.

It added, “The solution is clear: oil theft will be more effectively curtailed through the decentralization of pipeline surveillance contracts. When responsibilities are devolved to host communities and ethnic nationalities, accountability improves.

“Communities will generate intelligence within their own domains and peer-review themselves and expose offenders, because they have a direct stake in protecting their resources.

“You cannot preach peace while practicing oppression. You cannot demand stability while engineering inequality. And you certainly cannot expect silence while economically strangling and asphyxiating entire ethnic nationalities.

“The Niger Delta struggle was never fought to replace external marginalization with internal domination. It has always been about justice, dignity, and equitable participation. Any attempt, by any individual or entity, to corner opportunities that rightfully belong to the collective people of the region is a betrayal of that struggle.

“We must sound a clear note of warning: no single individual or group has the mandate to appropriate the economic rights of diverse ethnic nationalities within the Niger Delta.

“Every ethnic nation in the Niger Delta has competent and capable sons and daughters fully qualified to participate in pipeline surveillance and related engagements within their territories. Denying them this right is not only unjust, it is deeply provocative.”

“Let it be clearly understood: the path to peace in the Niger Delta is justice. The foundation of stability is inclusion. Any policy or action that ignores these truths is a deliberate invitation to unrest,” it said.

“If those in authority truly seek to avoid setting the Niger Delta on fire, the solution is simple and immediate: uphold the rule of law, respect the rights of Host Communities in their respective ethnic nations, dismantle monopolies, and embrace equity.

“Anything less will be seen for what it is, a conscious decision to deepen injustice and provoke avoidable tension.

“The Niger Delta must not be pushed to the brink. However, history has shown that when injustice becomes policy and exclusion becomes systemic, resistance inevitably follows.”

Niger Assembly passes law to regulate scavenging, scrap operations in residential areas

The Niger State House of Assembly has passed a new law regulating the activities of scavengers, scrap metal dealers, and Panteka operators within residential areas across the state.

The bill, a Private Member initiative, was passed during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Minna following the adoption of a joint committee report by the Committees on Environment and Climate Change, and Judiciary and Legal Matters.

Presenting the report, Chairman of the Joint Committees, Mohammed Garba, representing Agwara Constituency, said stakeholders were engaged through a public hearing to consider concerns around the proposed legislation.

He noted that the process was necessitated by rising security, environmental, and public order challenges linked to scavenging activities in residential communities.

The committees explained that the law seeks to enhance public safety, protect lives and property, and relocate scrap-related operations to designated sites outside residential neighbourhoods.

They further observed that scavenging activities have been associated with theft and vandalism of infrastructure, as well as health risks, particularly for children exposed to hazardous materials such as lead and mercury, which may affect neurological development.

Lawmakers also raised concerns that scavenger movements with carts often obstruct traffic and create public nuisance, while warning that such activities could be exploited for criminal surveillance or related operations.

However, the Assembly acknowledged that the sector provides livelihood for many youths and low-income earners, stressing the need for licensing, monitoring, and designated operational zones to balance regulation with economic survival.

The Speaker, Dr Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, commended the committee and sponsor of the bill, Comrade Murtala Adamu Badaru, for their efforts, and directed that clean copies of the law be transmitted to the Executive for assent.

  • Nigeria Revenue Service commissions new headquarters, hails Tinubu’s fiscal reforms

Nigeria Revenue Service commissions new headquarters, hails Tinubu’s fiscal reforms

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, on Tuesday presided over the commissioning of the agency’s new headquarters in Abuja, describing it as a symbol of sweeping fiscal reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Adedeji said the project represents more than just a physical structure, but a culmination of years of vision, discipline, and coordinated reform efforts aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s fiscal architecture.

He noted that the Tinubu administration inherited a fragile economic environment marked by limited fiscal space, weak investor confidence, and structural distortions, but responded with what he described as a “comprehensive reset” of the nation’s economic framework.

According to him, key reforms—including the unification of foreign exchange markets, clearance of financial backlogs, and improved transparency—have helped restore macroeconomic credibility and investor confidence.

Adedeji also highlighted significant tax reforms, noting that over 60 fragmented tax laws had been streamlined into a more coherent system to enhance compliance, efficiency, and predictability, without necessarily increasing tax burdens.

He added that improvements in remittance systems, tighter fiscal controls, and the introduction of the National Single Window for trade have further strengthened revenue generation and governance.

Describing the new headquarters as a “tangible expression” of these reforms, he said the facility reflects the government’s commitment to building efficient and transparent institutions capable of delivering long-term value.

The NRS chairman praised the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, for their roles in shaping and implementing the reform agenda.

The newly commissioned headquarters comprises 16 floors across three towers and can accommodate over 3,000 staff, positioning it as a major hub for revenue administration in the country.

He described the event as a defining moment in Nigeria’s fiscal journey, expressing optimism that ongoing reforms would continue to yield sustainable and transformative outcomes.

UCL: You can never write them off – Arjen Robben on Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid

Former Chelsea winger, Arjen Robben, has insisted that Real Madrid can never be written off as they prepare to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final second leg tie on Wednesday.

Robben, however, backed Bayern Munich to progress to the semi-final if they are on their toes for the duration of the encounter.

“You can never write off Real,” Robben told Bayern Munich’s website. “I’m impressed by the fact that they always stay calm.

“But I believe that Bayern are the better team. They also have very good individual players who can decide a match.

“You obviously have to be careful about that. You have to be on your toes for the full 95 minutes.

“If Bayern can manage that, then as far as I’m concerned, there is only one team that will win.”

Bayern defeated Madrid 2-1 in the Champions quarterfinal first leg last week at the Santiago Bernabeu.

  • Aregbesola Mocks Tinubu, Says ‘Renewed Hope Is A Scam’

Aregbesola Mocks Tinubu, Says ‘Renewed Hope Is A Scam’

Erstwhile political associate of President Bola Tinubu and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has mocked the current administration, declaring that the Renewed Hope agenda is a classic scam.

Aregbesola, who is the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also called on President Tinubu to resign over worsening insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria.

The former Osun State Governor, who made the call while delivering a speech at the ongoing ADC National Convention in Abuja, stated, “People who deliberately split the Peoples Democratic Party are today being falsely portrayed as political strategists. Since when has criminality become a strategy?

“The ADC does not, and will never, owe its existence to any individual or group, including an electoral body masquerading as a neutral umpire, with its leadership dressed in the attire of political partisanship.”

He added, “The ADC derives its existence from the aspirations and values of the Nigerian people, who are tired of the deceit and colossal mismanagement to which this country is being subjected. We owe our existence to the Nigerian Constitution.

“We declare that freedom of association, including the right to form or belong to any political party, is guaranteed and is a fundamental right.”

He explained that, “We are here because the ADC is on a rescue mission to reclaim the country from the strangulating grip of the ruling party.

“The APC is a party that has foisted on the country an electoral law that stinks of forgery, where making false claims in electoral documents is no longer considered invalid; in other words, the ruling party is normalising criminality.”

He stressed, “We proclaim our existence because our country is worth the necessary sacrifices. We cannot allow khaki-socracy in Nigeria. The government claims that the recent reduction in exchange rates demonstrates its mastery of the economy.

“This is false. In truth, the exchange rate, which was about 700 naira to the dollar in the open market, not the official rate, when this government assumed office in 2023, is now about N1,400. This amounts to a 100 per cent devaluation in an import-dependent economy.

“This is terribly devastating. The cost of a litre of fuel before this administration was between 185 and 238 naira. Depending on the part of the country, it is now about 1,400 per litre and still rising,” the former minister stated.

Aregbesola expressed concern that, “The administration told Nigerians that if it does not solve the power problem by providing a constant power supply, it should not be voted for a second time.”

“Today, power supply is far worse,” he said, adding, “with some parts of the country receiving an average of two hours daily. Some other parts also receive an average of two hours daily, while others have been in darkness for weeks and months.

“Ordinarily, having made such a promise and performed woefully, an honest president should simply step down and not seek re-election. Rather, what we are witnessing is the most desperate attempt by a candidate in Nigerian electoral history to retain power at all costs, even if it means undermining the entire democratic system.

“Distinguished delegates and our rival leaders, four years ago, this government promised Nigerians renewed hope for a better future. Now, three years into its four-year term, it still makes promises and offers renewed hope.

“When exactly will this hope come to fruition? The answer is simple. It is a scam. The answer is what? A scam! If allowed, this regime will continue shouting renewed hope into eternity. We have the duty to stop scammers from retaining power.”

The former Osun State Governor also condemned a series of violent attacks across the country that have led to significant loss of lives, describing the situation as a failure of President Tinubu’s administration.

He accused the government of worsening insecurity and alleged a lack of empathy in its response to national tragedies.

Aregbesola further criticised the state of education and the economy, claiming that the number of out-of-school children has risen from 18.3 million to nearly 20 million, while many Nigerians have been pushed into extreme poverty.

He continued, “Once again, distinguished delegates, the country is drifting, and we cannot allow this continued drift into hopelessness. This is why, as I pointed out earlier, the ADC is on a rescue mission.

“On this, there is no time to spare. We call on all conscientious citizens to join us, because a fence-sitter in movements like this that require decisiveness is either a traitor or a collaborator with those who seek to destroy our country,” he stated.
