Nigeria at critical juncture over insecurity – IHRC warns

The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust, Nigeria Chapter, has raised alarm over the growing wave of banditry and insecurity in the country.

They warned that Nigeria is at a critical point that requires urgent and decisive action.

A statement signed by Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, Country Director of the organisation in Nigeria on Saturday, called on the government to respond with urgency, sincerity and a strong sense of justice.

“We call on the Government of Nigeria to rise with urgency, sincerity, and a strong sense of justice to decisively confront terrorism and banditry in all its forms,” the statement said.

According to the group, the crisis may appear overwhelming, but its roots can be traced to earlier injustices and systemic failures.

The organisation pointed to developments in Zamfara State, where it said the discovery of gold deposits led to the displacement of Fulani pastoralists from their ancestral lands.

“Evidence from affected areas… indicates that the discovery of valuable gold deposits led to the displacement of Fulani pastoral communities,” it stated.

It added that the disruption of livelihoods pushed many into poverty and contributed to crimes such as cattle rustling and banditry.

The IHRC also raised concerns about the role of vigilante groups, noting that while they were formed to provide security, some have worsened the crisis through abuses and extrajudicial actions.

It further alleged misconduct by some security personnel, judicial actors and traditional authorities, saying their actions have, at times, deepened grievances instead of resolving them.

“There are also troubling allegations of misconduct… whose actions have, at times, fueled grievances rather than resolved them,” the statement said.

The group warned of possible collusion between some officials and criminal elements, particularly in forest areas, where financial interests may be sustaining insecurity. It also cited reports of interference that led to the release of arrested suspects, which it said undermines public trust.

According to the organisation, what started as a local problem has now spread to other states including Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi and Kaduna, with similar patterns of land disputes and displacement emerging.

“As a human rights organisation, we strongly emphasize that sustainable peace can only be achieved through fairness, accountability, and a genuine commitment to addressing the root causes of the crisis,” it said.

IHRC called on the federal and state governments to urgently review the drivers of banditry, urging security agencies to act professionally and respect human rights.

It also demanded accountability for anyone found to be supporting insecurity, regardless of their position, and called for immediate steps to protect vulnerable communities and restore their livelihoods.

“Nigeria stands at a critical point. A just and decisive response today will determine the peace and stability of tomorrow,” the statement added.

Fani Kayode criticises ADC, describes convention as gathering of hungry jackals

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticized the recent national convention organized by the David-Mark faction of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, describing it as disorganised and lacking credibility.

In a strongly worded statement via his X handle on Saturday, he said the event reflected poor coordination and internal disunity, alleging that participants appeared uncomfortable due to inadequate facilities, including the absence of functional air-conditioning.

“I watched a faction of the ADC conducting what they described as their party convention a few days ago & it was pitiful.

“I saw an overcrowded hall filled with hot, sweaty, men & women” he said.

He further claimed the gathering was marked by disorderly conduct and confusion among attendees.

“They sweated profusely, argued loudly amongst themselves, broke into fisticuffs.”

He went further to recount an incident involving an elderly participant who mistakenly referenced another party during his speech, which he said created an awkward moment.

“He took the microphone and screamed ‘APC’ before realising he was actually in an ADC Convention” he said.

Fani-Kayode also criticised the overall appearance and tone of the event, portraying it as lacking seriousness and cohesion.

“Forgive me for saying so but this was indeed a strange gathering who have no sense of purpose, unity or direction.

“What we witnessed was more of a gathering of hungry, ragged & desperate jackals & long-rejected souls that are craving for a return to power rather than the Convention of a legitimate & serious political party.

“Mr. President rightly described theirs as a “street Convention”. What he failed to add was that it was a street Convention of vagabonds, riggers & wanderers.” He stated.

He dismissed the political strength of the faction, insisting it poses no real challenge ahead of future elections.

“Bottom line? The ADC ain’t going nowhere!” he concluded.

  • Nigerians will hate you if you continue fighting opposition – Primate Ayodele to Tinubu

Nigerians will hate you if you continue fighting opposition – Primate Ayodele to Tinubu

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to apply caution in his fight against opposition because it would breed more hatred for him from Nigerians.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Primate Ayodele revealed that fighting the opposition the way it is currently done is risky for the ruling party.

He explained that it will bring more crises for the government, and those around the president will not stand by him to fight when the time comes because they are after what they want to get.

“I must also caution the ruling party; fighting the opposition is a risky game because of their support, and the Nigerian government will not be able to fight the crisis because those with Tinubu are fake; they are deceiving him. Tinubu must apply caution because the more he fights, the more Nigerians hate him.”

The prophet also asked the opposition to get prepared for more crises because the ruling party has more strategies to fight its leaders.

He warned Abubakar Malami and El-Rufai not to think it’s over because more is still coming.

“Opposition should get prepared for more vices from the ruling party because they will fight them with litigation, so they can lose focus. Malami, El Rufai shouldn’t think it is over till they finish the election, they have several strategies”

Primate Ayodele urged the President to prepare adequately if he wants to continue fighting opposition because it won’t be easy for him.

“Tinubu must add more feet to his legs if he wants to fight opposition because they won’t take it easy with him, either.

“We will start seeing several scenes and dramas coming up in the country. In two months time, we will start seeing them, and it will be very serious,” he added.
