New APC executives emerge in Adamawa through consensus

New executives in the Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have emerged at the weekend as it concluded its state congress through consensus.

Ambassador Baba Gana Ajimi, chairman of the state congress, conducted the congress at the Mahmud Ribadu Square and called for the dissolution of the former state executive council of the party.

Kate Raymond Mamunu, Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly and member representing Demsa State Constituency, moved the motion for the dissolution of the state exco, and was seconded by the chairman of Toungo Local Government Area, Suleiman Ahmed Gangkuba, which brought to an end the tenure of the last exco.

For the state congress to be on consensus, Senator Grace Bent moved the motion according to the party’s constitution, and former Deputy Speaker and member representing Guyuk State Constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Sunday Peter, seconded the motion for consensus.

Ajimi, the chairman of the congress committee, asked the delegates through a voice vote to confirm the election of the state party executives through consensus.

As a result, Ajimi announced Hamza Bello Madagali as the state chairman, Dr. Raymond Chindama as vice chairman, Mustapha Atiku Ribadu as secretary, Bature Moses as assistant secretary, Victor Dogo as publicity secretary, and Dedan Raymond as youth leader, among others.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, speaking at the event, explained that the state has achieved full political integration into the ruling APC and is set for victory come 2027, stressing that what happened in the state was nothing but a political evolution, with the APC having successfully transitioned from alignment to what he called a “full fusion” of political structures across all levels.

He noted that while all stakeholders may not have achieved their individual expectations, “no one is a loser” in the process, as political integration requires sacrifice and compromise.

According to the governor, the congresses in the state reflected the political maturity of stakeholders and demonstrated a shared commitment to building a stronger and more competitive party structure in the state, with the smooth execution of ward, local government, and state congresses.

A political platform tagged “Adamawa Renewed Hope 226 Movement (ARH226M),” according to the governor, has been established, saying that it is a grassroots mobilisation structure covering all 226 wards of the state.

  • 2027: Any Obi-North Ticket Will Defeat Tinubu – Udenta

2027: Any Obi-North Ticket Will Defeat Tinubu – Udenta

A former presidential adviser and founding National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), Prof. Udenta Udenta, has said President Bola Tinubu is vulnerable ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that any opposition ticket pairing Labour Party’s Peter Obi with a northern candidate would defeat the incumbent.

Udenta made the assertion during an interview on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, where he delivered a sweeping critique of the Tinubu administration, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and Nigeria’s current socio-economic conditions.

According to him, Nigerians are worse off today than they were under former President Muhammadu Buhari, arguing that the APC lacks ideological grounding and has failed to translate governance into improved living conditions.

“There’s something in law we call the fruition of time – seasons come and seasons go,” he said. “The Alliance for Democracy was an ideological platform with clear vision and philosophical depth. APC is just a special purpose vehicle. It’s a contraption. It has no focus, no ideological bearing, no philosophical reach.”

He added that the APC “was put together to flush PDP out of power in 2015, and they succeeded in that miraculous way. But since then, they have refused to govern,” Udenta stated. “The eight years of the Buhari presidency have been considered by many as a disaster in terms of corruption, nepotism, insecurity, and aloofness.”

Assessing Tinubu’s administration, Udenta argued that, “The failures of the Buhari presidency are the failures of the Bola Tinubu presidency. The problem is that the Tinubu presidency has intensified and accelerated them to a higher degree.”

He maintained that the 2027 election would be decided not by political rhetoric but by the lived realities of Nigerians. “Nigerians are not going to listen to grandstanding. They will ask themselves: how were we on May 29, 2023, and how are we today? The answer will be resounding – we are worse off today,” he said.

Udenta dismissed government claims of economic progress, describing official statistics as disconnected from everyday realities.

“Abstract numbers on macroeconomic stability are meaningless to the people. What matters is the living conditions. Are Nigerians earning more? Are prices lower? Can they afford food, rent, and medicine? The reality is that people are bitterly hungry,” he said.

On security and economic reforms, he rejected calls to give the administration more time, insisting that its record so far is insufficient.

“That record is very shabby, to say the least. It cannot win an election,” he declared.

The political analyst also accused the government of undermining opposition parties and manipulating the political space ahead of 2027.

“If you crunch the numbers, you will see that the government is running scared. If it wasn’t, we would not have the kind of INEC we have today. The system is being choked to weaken the opposition,” he alleged.

Despite acknowledging internal crises within opposition parties, Udenta expressed confidence that they would regroup before the elections.

“Politicians sometimes move like ghosts—they regroup and find a home. Between now and the deadlines, they will find a secure platform. Once that happens, they will have enough time to rebuild and campaign,” he said.

He further argued that the perceived strength of the APC, with its control of multiple states and political structures, does not guarantee victory.

“If you have all the governors, senators, and ministers, why are you running scared? The government is running scared because 2027 will be about its record,” he added.

On possible opposition strategies, Udenta stressed the importance of zoning and coalition-building, pointing to Peter Obi as a central figure in the South.

“In the South, what is visible and manifest is Peter Obi,” he said. “The choice of a northern candidate is for the opposition to decide—whether it is Kwankwaso or others.”

He predicted, “Any pairing today of a Peter Obi in the South and anybody in the North would defeat Tinubu in 2027.”

War: Iran strikes US military ships with drone

Iran has fired drone at the United States military vessels to retaliate US forces striking and intercepting an Iranian ship.

Iranian local media, the semi-official news agency, Tasnim, made this known on Sunday.

The local media reported that after US forces boarded the container ship TOUSKA in the Gulf of Oman, Iranian drones were launched against American vessels, without specifying whether the targets were military or commercial.

Iran had confirmed earlier that US forces seized the Iranian vessel, warning that it would retaliate soon following the move.

“The drone attacks were carried out in direct retaliation for the earlier US action against the Iranian-flagged vessel,” the local media said.

According to Fars News Agency, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said US forces had targeted the vessel, disabled its navigation system and boarded it after what it described as a ceasefire violation.

Meanwhile, Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari confirmed that the US forces opened fire at the vessel before boarding it.

US President Donald Trump first announced the incident on Sunday and later confirmed by US Central Command, CENTCOM.

  • Nigerians tackle govt over huge financial loss to medical tourism

Nigerians tackle govt over huge financial loss to medical tourism

For quite a number of years now, Nigerians have been lamenting the preference by public officials to travel overseas for medical treatment of ailments that are as simple as malaria instead of fixing and making use of the country’s medical facilities.

This practice is particularly more pronounced among politicians and some top government officials, as well as some wealthy private individuals.

Most often, politicians and government officials embark on such trips using the public funds at the expense of the poor masses, whose wealth is being squandered, and who ordinarily deserve good, efficient and effective medical facilities.

Many Nigerians are not happy over the development. Their anger stems from the fact that these public officers have deliberately refused to fix the country’s health sector.

Those who express this sentiment also argue that these sets of public officers control the levers of power at different levels of government, meaning that they are in a vantage position to fix the country’s health sector so that both the rich and the poor can have access to good medical care. Another worry is that most of these foreign hospitals where Nigeria’s public officers rush to for medical care are dominated by Nigerian medical personnel, who escaped from the country in search of greener pastures.

Last year, Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who was on such a medical trip to London passed on. It was the Federal Government that took care of every bill ranging from the hospital bill to the cost of transport back home.

Concerned Nigerians are of the view that such huge expenses could have been avoided if he had fixed the country’s health sector during the eight years that he ruled the country.

Apart from ordinary Nigerians, medical experts have also decried the loss incurred by the Nigerian government to medical tourism yearly.

In fact, the experts revealed that Nigeria loses an average of $1.3billion to medical tourism annually.

This revelation was made recently when experts and stakeholders in the health sector gathered at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, for the fourth annual Public Health Grand-round, which was organised by the university’s Faculty of Public Health.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Isaac Oluyi, who was the keynote speaker at the programme, themed, ‘Health Systems Strengthening: Building Resilience for the Future,’ said the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Coordinator in Ondo State, Dr. Habibu Yahaya, submitted that health systems fragility results in about US$1.2 billion loss from the Nigerian economy to medical tourism yearly.

According to him, “This is not unconnected with the shocks often experienced by the country’s health system. Nigerian health systems face acute shocks including epidemics, pandemics and chronic stressors like poor funding and persistent strikes.”

Earlier, the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adolphus Loto had stressed the importance of system resilience in public health, saying, “A system has both input and output. Resilience is the ability of the system to withstand pressure without breaking.

“Building our health system to resist shocks, while continuing to deliver essential services, is non-negotiable.”

The medical experts posited that one of the factors responsible for weak health systems is the human resource gap.

The panelists at the event, drawn from the academia, the government and the health sectors spoke with one voice on the need for task shifting, improved remuneration, sustainable health financing, emergency preparedness and health security, community engagement and equity, innovation and research, better referral systems and use of accurate workforce data to strengthen the health systems in Nigeria.

Acting Dean of Public Health, Professor Ofonime Johnson, described the grand-round as an annual scientific gathering that provides a platform for discussing emerging public health challenges.

However, speaking on the revelation that Nigeria spends over $1.3 billion annually on medical tourism, a public affairs analyst, James Osewele, decried the situation, describing it as a shame.

He was of the view that public officials, such as the president and his vice, governors and their deputies, as well as state and federal legislators, should be banned from accessing medical care overseas. He noted that such a drastic measure would be the first practical step to fixing the country’s sector so that it can serve all persons, irrespective of class or position in society.

He said: “The figure, as far as I am concerned, is a modest estimation. I am sure that when proper statistics are taken, it could even double that amount.

“But, it is very shameful that a country as big as Nigeria cannot fix its own health sector, such that its presidents see foreign medical trips as part of governance.

“Look at what happened to former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua; he died in a London hospital. Thereafter, he was brought back to Nigeria in a body bag and buried.

“A similar thing repeated itself last year with the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in the same London hospital. He was also brought back in a body bag and buried.

“Our current President Bola Tinubu has made foreign medical trips a routine since he assumed office as president. The same applies to so many other politicians in Nigeria.

“I strongly believe that unless there is a law in place to stop them from such foreign medical trips, our health sector can never work. But, if they are prevented from accessing foreign medical assistance, they would fix the health sector because they know they will equally use it.

“It is just like the argument that public officials should stop sending their children abroad for education. It is also believed that when such a thing happens, the issue of the incessant Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU strikes and other teething problems in the education sector would be a thing of the past.

“Public officials in Nigeria should be banned from going abroad for medical care. After all, most of the medical personnel, ranging from doctors to nurses, pharmacists and lab scientists, who attend to them over there are Nigerians.

“So, why won’t they build and equip hospitals with state-of-the-art modern medical equipment so that these medical professionals will stop migrating and stay back home to offer their services to their fatherland?

“When they do that, they would have killed even more than two birds with one stone. First, it will create jobs for the country’s medical personnel who are moving in droves to foreign lands in search of greener pastures.

“Secondly, it would reduce unnecessary wastage for the country as they would no longer be spending foreign currency to get medical help but Nigeria’s local currency, the Naira. Thirdly, it will also attract outsiders, who would also come to Nigeria for medical services. In fact, the benefits are many.”

Also speaking, a medical doctor with a private hospital in Lagos, Davies Olanrewaju, equally agreed that the figure released by the experts at the medical university in Ondo was moderate.

He stated that the actual figure is far more than that.

He decried the way medical personnel, particularly doctors, are treated in Nigeria.

He noted that apart from inadequate incentives to motivate them, the working environment is also not encouraging.

“So, when one has an opportunity to go out of the country, he or she doesn’t think twice. This is because apart from the passion to save lives, doctors also want to make money and be able to solve family and other personal financial problems.

“And with what they are paid in Nigeria, no doctor will think twice when the opportunity to travel overseas to practice beckons,” he told DAILY POST.

Also, a nurse, Mrs Omoruyi Victoria condemned the state of health facilities in Nigeria, stressing that she feels nostalgic each time she remembers that there was a time when foreigners came to Nigeria to receive medical care.

“Each time I remember what we were told about the royal family of the Saudi Arabian king coming to Nigeria for medical care sometimes in the past, I shudder.

“The question is: what went wrong? I think our leaders just stopped financing the health sector.

“Nigeria’s annual health budget is far below the United Nations’ minimum standard. It is a shame.

“If we expect our health care system to be like what obtains in developed economies, then our government must be serious with the health sector financing,” she stressed.

Nigerian father of three found dead in UK apartment

Barely a week after the reported death of a Nigerian mother of three from cancer in the United Kingdom, another tragedy has struck the Nigerian community, as a father of three, identified simply as Herbert, has been found dead in his apartment.

Herbert, who resided in Thornaby, was said to have died in his sleep last week, leaving behind his wife and three young children.

His family has since appealed for financial assistance to cover funeral expenses and the cost of repatriating his remains to Nigeria.

According to information shared on Sunday via a post on X by a user known as “The Stress Manager,” the incident has left relatives and associates in shock.

The post revealed that Herbert had been grappling with emotional and financial pressure following the recent death of his father in Nigeria, which occurred just days before his own passing.

“Herbert, a calm and devoted Nigerian husband and father of three young children, the youngest just eight years old, passed away suddenly in his sleep in Thornaby.

“Only a few days before his death, he was already dealing with the pain of losing his father in Nigeria. He could not travel for the burial, but he gave everything he had financially to ensure his father had a dignified farewell. That alone drained him mentally and financially.

“Then the unimaginable happened. Herbert passed away on the very day his father was laid to rest.”

The post further indicated that the situation was particularly distressing, as Herbert’s children were the ones who discovered his lifeless body in the apartment while their mother was away.

“To make it even more heartbreaking, his children were the ones who found him that morning because his wife was away at the time. No child should ever experience that.

“Now his wife is left alone to care for three young children while also facing the heavy financial burden of funeral and repatriation costs,” the post added.

A former president of Nigerians in the UK, Benjamin Kuti, also confirmed the incident in a post on his X account on Friday, calling on members of the Nigerian community in the UK to support the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign has been launched to assist the family, with appeals directed at Nigerians in the diaspora and the general public.

As of the time of filing this report, £2,633 had been raised out of the £7,000 target.

Only Peter Obi can give Tinubu strong fight – Prophet Iginla tells opposition

Prophet Joshua Iginla of the Champion Royal Assembly has declared that only the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi can give President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, a tough fight in 2027.

According to him, Obi, one of the top contenders for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential ticket, only needs a northern deputy to give APC a strong fight.

Iginla, who spoke while addressing the congregation during a live Sunday service, warned Obi against deputizing any other candidate.

He said, “This is my political opinion. If we really want to give the opposition party a strong fight, put Peter Obi there, let him be deputized by any Northerner and then we will have a fight.

“Peter Obi, don’t, if you vice anybody, you have lost your political relevance. It’s better you go zero and leave them to do their things. The issue is so simple, you need patience if you want to go there”.

DAILY POST reports that Obi and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso are currently in talk for possible alignment as supporters project Obi/Kwankwaso ticket.

EPL: ‘They’re not among the best’ – Emmanuel Petit names players Arsenal must replace

Arsenal legend, Emmanuel Petit has mentioned several players who should be let go by the club in the next transfer window.

He identified the specific area where the team needs to work on their performance this summer.

The Gunners haven’t won a big trophy since 2020 and have come in second place in the last three Premier League seasons.

This season, they are trying to win both the league championship and the UEFA Champions League prize.

They lost the EFL Cup final to Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Petit said the north London team still needs stronger wingers.

When asked about the Gunners’ interest in Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, the Frenchman told Andy’s Bet Club, “I do know that if Arsenal want to take the next step, which means playing good football all season, they need to bring in talented wingers.

“Look at Bayern Munich. Look at Paris Saint-Germain. Those teams that play very good, controlling football and are winning the best prizes have that kind of player.

“Arsenal have Bukayo Saka, who has been injured and has had a tough time this season so far. Noni Madueke, in my opinion, is a decent player, but he is not among the elite in this position.

“It’s pretty much the same on the left wing with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. but they are not among the best in their respective positions,” he added.
