ASUSS Rejects NUT Strike, Directs Members To Work

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has announced that its members will not participate in the industrial action declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, which commences on Monday.

Speaking with Aso Mirror, the ASUSS FCT State Chairman, Comrade Julius Ogundiran, said the decision was anchored on constitutional and labour provisions that guarantee freedom of association.

He cited Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for the right of individuals to freely associate or choose not to belong to any union.

He also referenced Section 12(4) of labour laws, stressing that no individual can be compelled to comply with the directives of an organisation they are not affiliated with.

“ASUSS is an independent professional body, mainly for secondary school teachers, with its own constitution, structure and leadership. Our members are not subject to the authority or directives of the NUT,” Ogundiran stated.

The union leader disclosed that ASUSS members have resolved to remain at their duty posts and continue academic activities without disruption, despite the planned strike.

Ogundiran further explained that some of the issues that triggered the NUT strike, particularly promotion-related concerns, have largely been addressed.

According to him, the Office of the Head of Service, alongside the relevant commission, has begun releasing promotion letters in batches.

He added that engagements by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) have also contributed to resolving the disputes, making the strike unnecessary for ASUSS members.

However, the ASUSS chairman raised concerns over what he described as “credible reports of intimidation, harassment and attempts to obstruct” union members from carrying out their duties.

He alleged that such actions were being carried out by individuals enforcing compliance with the NUT strike.

Ogundiran called on relevant authorities to intervene by issuing clear directives to protect ASUSS members from any form of interference.

He also urged the issuance of an official circular affirming the constitutional rights of ASUSS members to continue working.

“ASUSS remains committed to maintaining industrial harmony, upholding professional standards and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of quality education within the FCT,” he said.

THE WHISTLER reported that the crisis dates back to early 2026, when FCTA workers embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and poor working conditions.

My nightclubs are the least of what I do — Sir Uyi fires back at Vaniti critics

The Chief Executive Officer of Vaniti Lagos, Uyi Ogbebor, has warned critics of his nightclub to steer clear, as he may be forced to show his might if pushed to the wall.

Ogbebor, popularly known as Sir Uyi, made the remarks in a post shared on his official Instagram handle, @sir_uyi, while reacting to allegations that his nightclub sells fake drinks.

He described the claims as unfounded while highlighting the scale of his business operations.

Reacting to the controversy, he wrote: “Sometimes these people need a reminder. My humility is because I know where I came from, and I definitely know where I’m going. I don’t score cheap gains for peanuts. I grind every day and night for a good life.”

He further highlighted his business impact, stating, “I employ over 1,300 Nigerians across my businesses. Employing over 1,300 people is no small thing. That’s 1,300 families with income, with stability. That’s real impact, and it speaks louder than any MOPOL convoy or paparazzi moment ever could.”

Downplaying the focus on his nightclub operations, Ogbebor added, “My nightclubs are the least of what I do. I no small, o. Na when you try me, you go know who I be. Leave me alone, let me face my business. I be Benin man wey sabi.”

Meanwhile, his media team has cautioned those trying to dent his clean business record, clarifying that Uyi has always been apolitical and has at no point delved into politics, blaming the recent development on politics.

They also warned those targeting Vaniti and other businesses owned by Sir Uyi, because of his silence and refusal to align with any political divide, to tread with caution, stating that they cannot stay idle and watch his efforts of many years go to waste.

Malami Money Laundering Trial: Court Admits Nine EFCC Exhibits

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday admitted nine documentary exhibits tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik admitted the exhibits during the ongoing trial of the trio on an amended 16 count charge bordering on conspiracy, money laundering, and concealment of proceeds of unlawful activities involving N8,713,923,759.49.

The charges are said to contravene the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The exhibits, mostly banking documents from Zenith Bank Plc, were presented through the EFCC fourth prosecution witness, Mashelia Arhyel Bata, a compliance officer at the bank’s Maitama branch in Abuja.

Led in evidence by prosecution counsel J. S. Okutepa (SAN), Bata told the court he received an official request from the EFCC for documents relating to accounts linked to the defendants and several companies, including Rayhaan Hotels Limited, Rayhaan Bustan Agro Allied Limited, Nashab Limited, Golden Age Global Ventures, and Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.

He confirmed that the bank provided both electronic and hard copies of the requested documents, which numbered nine in total and were dated between July 19, 2024 and March 12, 2026.

The court admitted them as Exhibits D1 to D9 after overruling an initial objection by defence counsel, J. B. Daudu (SAN).

Under further examination by prosecution counsel Ekele Iheanach, the witness gave details of various transactions contained in the exhibits, including account opening documents and statements for accounts belonging to Malami and A. A. Malami and Company in both naira and dollar accounts.

Bata highlighted several inflows, including N194,791,608 from New Horizons Limited on November 11, 2020, N622.5 million from Rayhaan Bustan Agro Allied Limited on June 24, 2022, N250 million each from Rayhaan Hotels Limited on July 1 and July 7, 2022, and N500 million from Rayhaan Bustan Agro Allied Limited on December 22, 2022, among others running into billions of naira.

Defence counsel later requested an adjournment to study the newly admitted exhibits and prepare for cross examination.

Justice Abdulmalik granted the request and adjourned the matter until May 13, 2026 for continuation of trial.

We won’t gamble with Kano north – Gumawa

The Chairman of the Kano North Political Stakeholders Forum, Aliyu Abbas Gumawa Gabasawa, has said that Kano North Senatorial District is not open to political experimentation or imposed candidates.

In a statement issued on Monday, Gumawa said recent political activities in the district, particularly the declaration by former Minister of State for Housing, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, have raised serious concern.

He said after consultations and assessment of the political situation, the ambition does not reflect the aspirations of the people of Kano North.

According to him, it is a misplaced ambition, lacking grassroots backing and relevance to the aspirations of the people of Kano North.

Gumawa also pointed to the nature of the declaration event, noting that it was attended mostly by people from outside the constituency.

“It is our considered view that the event was dominated by political actors whose influence does not reflect the realities of electoral strength within Kano North, and therefore, cannot be used as a measure of popular support. We also observe with concern the increasing trend of external interference in the political affairs of Kano North Senatorial District, particularly attempts by non-indigenes of the constituency to impose or promote candidates without due regard to the will of the people.

He added that such a gathering cannot be used as a measure of popular support.

He further warned against what he described as increasing external interference in the political affairs of Kano North.

“We observe with concern attempts by non-indigenes of the constituency to impose or promote candidates without due regard to the will of the people,” he said.

Gumawa stressed that Kano North will not accept such moves.

“Kano North is not available for political experimentation or imposed candidacies,” he said.

“Such actions, if left unchecked, risk undermining the unity, stability, and democratic integrity of our constituency, which has consistently demonstrated loyalty to credible and effective representation.”

He called on political actors to respect the wishes of the people and avoid creating unnecessary tension.

He urged that the electorate be allowed to decide their future based on performance and trust.

He also reaffirmed confidence in the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, describing him as a tested, trusted, and result-oriented representative whose performance continues to earn support across the district.
