Don’t take us for granted, Akpabio destroyed NASS – ADC members warn Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, National Legislatures Forum, on Tuesday warned President Bola Tinubu’s administration against taking the party’s humane’s disposition for weakness.

Speaking at the forum’s press conference in Abuja, a former member of the House of Representatives, Chile Igbawua, warned that the ADC is not begging but asking the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to carry out its duties.

According to Igbawua: “Agreed that the ADC has been as humane as the opposition political party can be but I would like to sound a note of warning that this government should not take that for weakness. We are not begging, we are simply asking everybody to do what they are supposed to do. The judiciary and electoral umpire should do their work as they are assigned.

“As it stands, ADC doesn’t have confidence in INEC as it’s presently constituted. It’s surprising that the head of the legislature has become a press secretary to the INEC Chairman that when accusations are done against him, he sit there in the other arm of government to defend him just like he defends other functionaries in the executives.”

Igbawua also accused Senate President Godswill Akpbio of destroying the Nigerian legislature, stressing that the forum is ashamed of the current National Assembly.

He added: “We know that Akpabio has destroyed the legislature and we are ashamed to say so, we were there and we knew what we did when occasion demanded.

“We are ashamed of what we see there today but we believe that those who think that they have a field day should know that they don’t, they will all give account if anybody tries to mess up the democracy; he will account for it personally and corporately.”

Lawmakers Dump PDP, APC, LP In Fresh Defections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and Labour Party (LP) suffered a fresh wave of defections in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with the PDP losing five of its members to other parties.

This comes as Lawmakers continued to realign across party lines ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At the resumption of plenary after the Easter break, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read out a series of defection letters, reflecting increasing fluidity within Nigeria’s political space.

Kalu dismissed concerns that the trend signals a drift towards a one-party system, insisting it reflects democratic freedom.

“This is to show the country that no party is stifled. People are leaving the majority party to the minority parties and the minority parties for the majority party. This is the beauty of democracy,” he said.

One of the notable defections came from Lagos State, where Thaddeus Attah, who represents Eti-Osa Federal Constituency, left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In his letter, Attah attributed his decision to “the protracted crisis in the leadership of the LP,” which he said had affected effective representation of his constituents.

The PDP lost five members in the latest movement. Abubakar Abdul from Niger State defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Yakubu Noma from Kebbi State joined the ADC. Ibrahim Mohammed, also from Kebbi State, moved to the APC.

In Osun State, Mudashiru Alani (Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa) and Adetunji Olusoji (Odo-Otin/Ifelodun/Boripe) left the PDP for the Accord Party.

The APC also recorded losses as David Fuoh (Taraba) defected to the PDP, while Bashir Zubair (Kaduna) joined the ADC, highlighting the two-way nature of the political realignments.

The defections have been linked to ongoing leadership crises within major political parties, particularly the PDP and Labour Party, as political actors reposition ahead of party primaries.

Since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in 2023, the APC has maintained a numerical advantage in the House, while opposition parties continue to pursue relevance through defections and coalition-building.

Analysts say the increasing involvement of smaller parties such as the ADC points to a gradual diversification of Nigeria’s political space beyond the traditional APC–PDP dominance.

The House adjourned plenary to Wednesday in honour of Kano lawmaker Hassan Danjuma, who died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 66.

“No external interference”- Orji Kalu clears air on INEC allegations

Former Abia State governor and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed claims suggesting interference by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Nigeria’s electoral process, describing the allegations as unfounded.

Speaking on Monday, April 21, 2026, during a media chat in Abuja, Kalu said there is no credible evidence to support accusations that INEC is being manipulated or influenced by external forces.

In his statement Sen. Uzo Kalu said “INEC is doing its job within the limits of the law. People should stop making baseless claims about interference when they have no proof”.

The lawmaker, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, stressed that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when institutions are allowed to function independently without unnecessary political pressure or public distrust fueled by speculation.

Kalu also urged political actors and stakeholders to focus on strengthening the electoral system through constructive engagement rather than spreading narratives that could undermine public confidence.

He added that “If there are concerns, they should be addressed through proper legal and institutional channels, not through unverified public accusations”.

  • PDP ‘Will Win Big In 2027’, Says South-West Chairman

PDP ‘Will Win Big In 2027’, Says South-West Chairman

The South-West Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kamorudeen Ajisafe, has expressed optimism that the party will win more states and National Assembly seats in the region and across the country in the 2027 general elections.

Ajisafe, in a statement on Tuesday, said the crisis rocking the party would soon be resolved, adding that the PDP would reclaim its position as the dominant party in the South-West and Nigeria.

His comments come amid the ongoing internal crises that have weakened the once-dominant ruling party in the country.

The PDP has, since 2023, been battling internal rifts, with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, leading a faction, while Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed, leading the party.

The two factions have held separate conventions and produced parallel National Working Committee members to steer the affairs of the party.

However, Ajisafe maintained that with efforts being put in place by stakeholders to ensure that PDP aspirants are not stranded, there is no doubt that the “consolidated efforts” will deliver a tangible electoral victory for the party in 2027.

“I will continue to say that those expecting PDP to die will be disappointed. I know for a fact that this crisis will soon end, and after that, we will bounce back. I can assure you that PDP will win more states and National Assembly seats in the South-West and across the country.

“With the achievements of Governor Seyi Makinde in Oyo State, do you think any other party will defeat him? Look at the circular road and other monumental projects he has executed. The governor is also popular among his people, and he enjoys the support of the traditional rulers as well.

“Let me use this opportunity to warn that anybody or any group attempting to incite the traditional institution against Makinde should desist. By every standard, Makinde has raised the bar of governance in Oyo, and with the structure in place in the state, I am confident that the PDP will retain the state.

“We also have a credible and popular candidate in Ekiti State, and with all indications, we are set for victory. PDP will shock critics in 2027. Check all the states in Nigeria, you will see that we have a strong presence, we will win big in 2027,” he stated.

Nasarawa Deputy Speaker Involved in Ghastly Motor Accident

The Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has reportedly been involved in a ghastly motor accident along the Keffi–Akwanga highway.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Monday morning when the lawmaker’s vehicle was involved in a crash along the busy highway. The damaged vehicle was later seen evacuated from the scene and moved to the Assembly complex in Lafia.

Details surrounding the exact cause of the accident and the condition of the Deputy Speaker at the time of filing this report were still unclear, as authorities have yet to release an official statement.

The Keffi–Akwanga axis has witnessed several road traffic incidents in recent times, raising ongoing concerns about safety and enforcement on the route.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available from relevant authorities.

  • PDP loses five Reps, APC two as fresh defections hit House

PDP loses five Reps, APC two as fresh defections hit House

A new round of defections shook the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with lawmakers switching parties in what many see as early moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

When plenary resumed after the Easter recess, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announced multiple defections through letters read on the floor, pointing to increasing political realignments across parties.

He downplayed fears that the trend suggests a drift toward a one-party system, saying it instead reflects democratic choice.

“This is to show the country that no party is stifled. People are leaving the majority party to the minority parties and the minority parties to the majority party. This is the beauty of democracy,” Kalu said.

One key defection came from Lagos, where Eti-Osa lawmaker Thaddeus Attah left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress.

He blamed his move on “the protracted crisis in the leadership of the LP,” noting that it had affected his ability to serve constituents effectively.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, recorded the highest number of losses, with five members leaving its ranks.

Among them, Niger lawmaker Abubakar Abdul moved to the All Progressives Congress, while Yakubu Noma from Kebbi joined the ADC. Another Kebbi representative, Ibrahim Mohammed, also defected to the APC.

In Osun, Mudashiru Alani (Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa) and Adetunji Olusoji (Odo-Otin/Ifelodun/Boripe) exited the PDP for the Accord Party.

The APC also lost two members, as Taraba’s David Fuoh switched to the PDP, while Bashir Zubair from Kaduna defected to the ADC, underlining the back-and-forth nature of the political shifts.

Party defections are common in Nigeria, especially as elections draw closer. With less than two years to the 2027 polls, lawmakers are adjusting their affiliations based on internal party crises, electoral strategy, and regional interests.

Ongoing leadership disputes particularly within the PDP and Labour Party have contributed to the latest movements, as parties reposition ahead of primary elections.

For many lawmakers, decisions on party alignment often depend on re-election chances, influence within party structures, and connections to key political blocs.

Since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in 2023, the APC has retained majority control in the House, while opposition parties continue to seek strength through alliances and defections.

The growing appeal of smaller parties like the ADC suggests a slow shift away from the long-standing dominance of the APC and PDP.

Observers believe defections could increase in the coming months as political parties finalize their internal arrangements and aspirants begin testing their support base before primaries.

Tuesday’s developments once again highlight a recurring trend in Nigeria’s legislature party loyalty remains flexible, particularly when election stakes are high.

The House later adjourned sitting to Wednesday in honour of Kano lawmaker Hassan Danjuma, who passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of 66.
