  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex-agent, Mendes names greatest player ever

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex-agent, Mendes names greatest player ever

Super-agent, Jorge Mendes, has named Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest player in the history of football.

He also said he references the careers of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to provide guidance for young athletes.

The Portuguese agent emphasized that maintaining discipline off the field is essential for achieving greatness in the sport.

Mendes has represented Cristiano Ronaldo for an extended period and stressed that young players should look up to the Portuguese icon and his long-time rival, Lionel Messi.

He encouraged aspiring athletes to adopt a humble lifestyle and adhere to strict discipline if they wish to emulate these two legends.

As reported by Goal, Mendes stated, “Typically, I engage with my players and ask them: ‘Do you aspire to be like Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi off the field as well, or do you prefer to be…?’. I will refrain from naming individuals, but that illustrates the distinction.

“I view myself as very fortunate. Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of football and simultaneously serves as the best role model off the pitch. This is the example we should convey to the younger generation.

“Often, we do not select the largest club, but rather the environment where they can play and develop. Joining a lower division may be more beneficial if it allows for playing time.

“Without opportunities, talent becomes irrelevant. Numerous players falter because they lack the appropriate context.

“They may spend a year or two without playing, leading to the perception that they are not skilled, but the issue lies not in talent, but in opportunity.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated European and global football for nearly two decades. The two have set numerous records at the individual level and have secured countless trophies for both their clubs and national teams, collectively winning 13 Ballon d’Or awards.

2027: Opposition political parties not threat to democracy – Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said the presence of opposition political parties is not a threat to democracy.

Makinde said this on Saturday in Ibadan, the state capital at a National Summit of Opposition Political Leaders, Themed “Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democracy: A National Dialogue”.

The event was attended by prominent members of opposition political parties in the country.

Makinde who was the host of the meeting, insisted that the presence of credible opposition parties sustains democracy.

He called on all the leaders of opposition political parties to come together and unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2027.

He urged them to jettison their personal ambitions but work for the success of the coalition.

Makinde maintained that only a formidable opposition can defeat the ruling party.

He said, “And Nigeria must not make that drift. The truth is simple. No matter how strong any party becomes, no matter how popular any government may appear, the presence of credible opposition is not a threat to democracy, it is what sustains democracy.

“If we allow opposition to weaken, whether by design or by neglect, then we all bear the consequences”

U.S., AU Condemn Coordinated Terrorist Attacks In Mali

The United States and the African Union have strongly condemned a wave of coordinated attacks by armed terrorist groups that targeted military positions across Mali on Saturday, including in the capital, Bamako, and several other cities.

Mali’s army reported that unidentified armed terrorist groups launched simultaneous assaults early Saturday morning, around 6 a.m. local time. Fighting erupted near the key Kati military base, home to important barracks and the residence of junta leader General Assimi Goïta, as well as areas close to Modibo Keita International Airport in Bamako. Clashes were also reported in northern cities such as Gao and Kidal, and in the central town of Sévaré in the Mopti region.

Witnesses described explosions, sustained gunfire, and military helicopters overhead as security forces responded. The Malian army stated that the attackers suffered heavy setbacks, with several neutralised and sweep operations underway. Authorities urged calm and warned against spreading unverified information. No group has yet claimed responsibility, though such multi-location operations have historically been linked to jihadist networks like JNIM, an al-Qaeda affiliate active in the Sahel.

The United States strongly condemned the attacks, with the U.S. Bureau of African Affairs expressing deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected. Washington reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts to advance peace, stability, and security across Mali and the wider region. The U.S. Embassy in Bamako also issued a security alert, advising American citizens to shelter in place and avoid travel to affected areas such as Kati and the airport.

The African Union also voiced deep concern over the attacks, warning that they risk exposing civilian populations to significant harm. AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf strongly condemned the violence and expressed full solidarity with the Malian people, government, and security forces. He reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to peace, security, good governance, and stability in Mali and the Sahel.

Casualty figures remain unconfirmed as operations continue, with the situation described as fluid. The army, however, reports that it is being brought under control in several areas.

Mali has grappled with jihadist insurgencies, ethnic tensions, and political instability for over a decade, particularly since successive military coups. The current junta has partnered with Russian forces to combat armed groups, but large-scale attacks on military targets persist amid broader regional insecurity in the Sahel.

The incident is seen as one of the more ambitious coordinated operations in recent years, highlighting the continued threat to Mali’s security apparatus in both urban centres and remote areas.
