Ego, competition destroying collaborations among Nigerian artists – Joeboy

Afrobeats singer Joeboy has said ego is affecting how Nigerian artists collaborate.

Speaking in a recent interview with Cool FM Lagos alongside his colleague, Wizkid Chan, Joeboy claimed that some artists approach collaboration with a competitive mindset, seeking to outshine their collaborators.

Joeboy said he prefers to collaborate with artists with whom he has cordial relationships to prevent potential conflict of interest.

“It is easier for me to collaborate with artists that I am cool with or friends with. Because there will be no ego or inner competition. Personally, if I feature you, I expect you to outshine me in the song. That is why I featured you. So, I don’t get the competition,” he said.

On his part, Wizard Chan said, “My problem with collaboration is just ego. I would never interfere when you’re recording; you just also do the same. Some artists will ask for a feature and want to tell you how to do your job. That is wrong. Let me do my thing.

“The reason I would feature anybody is because I cannot do what they are doing. And I can not even tell them to sound like me or do my style. The aim of collaboration is to bring a different aspect to the song. And it is not a competition. But some artists would go as far as changing their verses when they hear their collaborator’s own and it sounds better than their’s. It is not supposed to be a competition,” he added.

2027: ADC chieftain, Ayuba Umar bows out of Nasarawa governorship contest

Veteran journalist and one of the youngest founding figures of Nasarawa State, Ayuba Umar, has officially withdrawn from the 2027 governorship race, citing principles of fairness, equity, and responsible leadership as reasons behind his decision.

Umar, a leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), announced his withdrawal in a Facebook post on Tuesday after what he described as wide consultations and careful personal reflection.

Explaining his position, the former governorship aspirant said it would be politically unfair and morally difficult for him to remain in the contest because he shares the same senatorial district, local government area, and constituency with the incumbent governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule.

According to him, leadership must be guided by consistency and justice, especially when advocating for balanced representation and zoning in the state.

“If I speak against political imbalance when others seek to benefit from it, then I must also reject it when I stand to gain. That is the true test of principled leadership and the responsibility that comes with integrity and accountability,” he stated.

Umar recalled that he had previously stepped aside in 2018 in the interest of political stability, noting that his latest decision was another sacrifice aimed at protecting democratic values and strengthening public trust in leadership.

“In 2018, I stepped aside for peace and stability. In 2026, I am stepping aside again to preserve the credibility of the principles that sustain democracy. This is not surrender; it is a reflection of conviction, character, and integrity,” he added.

Ayuba Umar had recently joined the African Democratic Congress after resigning from the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), where he was previously a prominent member.

Addressing journalists shortly after obtaining the forms, Kpautagi appreciated his supporters for their confidence in his leadership, assuring that his administration would focus on policies that directly impact the lives of ordinary people.

  • ‘Nigeria borrowing money it already earned’ — Agbakoba raises alarm over federation account crisis

‘Nigeria borrowing money it already earned’ — Agbakoba raises alarm over federation account crisis

A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, has raised concerns over what he described as a deepening financial crisis in Nigeria’s Federation Account.

Agbakoba stated that massive revenue deductions and under-remittances are weakening the nation’s economy.

In a post shared on X on Wednesday, the senior lawyer said many Nigerians were unaware of the importance of the Federation Account established under Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution to collect and distribute revenues among the federal, state and local governments.

According to him, the account, which he described as “the financial heartbeat” of the country, is facing severe challenges due to alleged revenue leakages and mounting debt obligations.

Agbakoba wrote: “Most Nigerians are unaware that the country has a vital financial institution known as the Federation Account. Created under Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, this account is designed to collect and store every kobo of revenue generated by the federal government. From there, these funds are shared among federal, state, and local governments.

“In essence, the Federation Account serves as the financial heartbeat of our nation. However, it is facing severe challenges.

“Consider these striking figures: In 2025, a staggering N14.94 trillion – almost 40% of the federation’s total revenues – was deducted before reaching the Federation Account.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) withheld N500 billion of the N1.1 trillion that was due in 2024.

“A current FAAC investigation is delving into allegations of $42.37 billion in under-remittances that occurred between 2011 and 2017.

“Debt service accounted for an alarming 69% of federal revenue last year, significantly exceeding the IMF’s recommended safe benchmark of 30-40%.

“Our total public debt has now ballooned to N159.27 trillion.

“In essence, we are borrowing against funds that we have already earned because that revenue never reaches the Federation Account.

“To address this urgent situation, I have crafted a policy reform proposal for the President @officialABAT to enhance Executive Order 9. This step is crucial for ensuring the financial integrity of our federation.

“Let’s engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can restore the heartbeat of our nation’s finances.”

  • Fire razes Apostolic Church building in Lagos, LASEMA confirms

Fire razes Apostolic Church building in Lagos, LASEMA confirms

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has confirmed that its responders successfully contained a fire incident in Lagos, preventing it from spreading to adjoining structures.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale.

According to the report, the fire outbreak occurred around 3 p.m., prompting immediate activation of emergency response teams after distress alerts were received via the state’s 767 and 112 emergency hotlines.

On arrival at the scene, responders discovered that a two-storey building occupied by The Apostolic Church had been engulfed in flames.

Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started from the rear section of the upper floor before spreading towards the front of the building.

The agency noted that the suspected cause of the fire was an electrical surge, as public electricity supply was active at the time of the incident.

No fatalities or injuries were recorded, a development attributed to swift evacuation efforts and rapid intervention by emergency responders.

Firefighting operations were carried out jointly with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, who worked together to bring the situation under control.

Firebreaks were strategically created to stop the flames from extending to nearby residential and commercial buildings.

While parts of the affected church building were salvaged, the area was secured to ensure the safety of worshippers, residents, and emergency personnel.

As of about 3:20 p.m., damping-down operations were still ongoing to eliminate any possibility of re-ignition, even though the fire had already been contained.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commended residents for promptly alerting emergency services and praised the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies.

He said the zero-casualty outcome reflected the state government’s sustained investment in emergency preparedness, training, and response infrastructure.

Oke-Osanyintolu also disclosed that the Lagos State Safety Commission would collaborate with faith-based organisations to conduct free electrical safety inspections and fire prevention drills.

He urged residents to ensure the use of certified electricians, install surge protection devices, and avoid overloading electrical circuits.

The Permanent Secretary also encouraged the public to continue making use of the 767 and 112 emergency numbers for rapid response to emergencies.

He added that both the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory would carry out structural integrity assessments on the affected building following the incident.
