Bank MD arraigned over alleged N19m, $30,000 fraud

The Abuja Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned the Managing Director of Viscount Microfinance Bank, Blessing Gozi-Anyaokei, over allegations of unlawful conversion of investment funds amounting to N19 million and $30,000.

Gozi-Anyaokei was brought before Justice Y. Halilu of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on a two-count charge bordering on alleged illegal conversion and obtaining money under false pretence.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the defendant allegedly received N19 million from one Ernest Terkula Jor in 2022 for investment purposes while serving as the Managing Director of the bank.

The anti-graft agency accused her of diverting the funds for personal use, contrary to the provisions of the Penal Code Act.

In the second charge, the EFCC alleged that she also received $30,000 from the same individual for investment purposes but dishonestly converted the money for her personal benefit.

The commission stated that the alleged offences contravene Section 311 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990, and are punishable under Section 312 of the same Act.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read before the court.

Following her plea, prosecution counsel, S.N. Robert, requested a date for the commencement of trial.

Justice Halilu subsequently granted the defendant bail with two sureties who must possess landed property within Abuja.

The court also ordered her to surrender her travel documents and barred her from travelling outside the country without court approval.

The matter was adjourned until July 19, 2026, for commencement of trial.

  • Leaving Nigeria should be your biggest dream – Skales tells Nigerian youths

Leaving Nigeria should be your biggest dream – Skales tells Nigerian youths

Afrobeats singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, popularly known as Skales, has urged Nigerian youths to make emigrating abroad their top priority.

According to him, leaving Nigeria would guarantee the security of Nigerian youths and afford them the opportunity to achieve their goals.

On his X handle, he wrote, “As a young Nigerian, your biggest dream should be to leave Nigeria so you can survive and actually achieve your dream by at least staying alive.”

His post elicited mixed reactions, with many berating him for encouraging brain drain instead of urging fellow citizens to hold their leaders accountable.

Some commenters also noted that his claim that a better life and security are guaranteed abroad is misleading, citing racism and other challenges Nigerians face overseas.

Others bashed him for “talking down” on the country after Nigeria and Nigerians made him rich and famous.

See some of the comments below:

JohnBullaSings wrote, “This your advice no gel. Just because it worked for you doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

“What’s even the mentality of making your biggest dream leaving Nigeria? Are you helping to solve the problem or are you adding to it?”

Sally wrote, “Lol, so migrating to white man’s land where your first crime is your skin colour guarantees your security?? Abi another African country you wan go achieve your dreams?? 😂 Omoooo 😭 Y’all act like Nigeria is the problem meanwhile Nigerians are the problem! Nigeria is just a place on the map.”

Okoyemekun wrote, “I will never understand how people whom Nigeria gave a head start over their fellow citizens in life suddenly start talking down on the country.”

Ethealdiadi wrote, “My dream is not to leave Nigeria.

“Even if I leave, I’m sure coming back. If we all ‘dream to leave,’ who remains? Land of richness in all ramifications and we are fleeing? Go and come back to build. It will take time, but the work has to be done.”

  • EPL: Jaap Stam names Chelsea star Xabi Alonso must not joke with

EPL: Jaap Stam names Chelsea star Xabi Alonso must not joke with

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has insisted that the next Chelsea manager must give Jorrel Hato a chance.

Stam could be speaking directly to Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, as well as ex-Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager, who is leading the race to become Chelsea’s next boss.

After a rocky start to life in west London, the 20-year-old, whom the Blues signed from Ajax in the summer for £37 million, has established himself as one of the most reliable defenders at the club.

In an interview with ComeOn, Stam took a dig at Chelsea owners BlueCo while explaining why Hato deserves to remain a regular in the starting lineup.

Stam said, “Jorrel Hato is a very talented player. When I saw him play as a centre-back when Liam Rosenior was there, I was quite impressed.

“I think he even played a big game against Man City, from what I recall. He’s very comfortable on the ball, which is typical for a player from Holland. He needs to be comfortable on the ball and able to dribble into midfield to create an extra man.

“He needs to be quick, which he is, and he’s quite aggressive in his style of play. He can also play as a left-back, where he played for a longer period at Ajax.

“It’s a shame, but that’s how Chelsea operates, bringing in young players, not always giving them an opportunity, and then maybe selling them on when they do well. It’s a shame for a player like him because he needs to play and improve by playing a lot of games.

“Hopefully, he’ll have a bigger role next season and a greater impact. Of course, that depends on the manager who comes in. At Chelsea, when a new manager arrives, they need to perform and be successful immediately.

“That often means managers pick more experienced, older players because they think it’s easier to take the next step with them. I don’t always agree with that.”

Hato was rarely given a chance by Enzo Maresca, despite having been identified as someone who could provide cover across the backline. When Chelsea secured his signature, the former head coach noted his wealth of experience as a key factor behind his arrival.

However, the Netherlands international was often overlooked in the opening weeks of the season, with Maresca pointing to the step up in physicality and intensity in the English top flight. In the final eight weeks of the Italian’s tenure, Hato played just once.

Abia Govt, FIDA vow to end harmful practices against women, children

Abia State Government has reiterated its determination to fight all harmful cultural practices and gender-based violence against women and children in families and communities across the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Maureen Ahukwa, gave the assurance on Thursday in Umuahia while addressing members of the Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, during the 2026 FIDA Week.

Ahukwa, who said that building a just and inclusive society requires collective action, praised the efforts of FIDA in providing legal support for women and fighting child abuse across the country.

She called for sustained collaboration with the international women lawyers to ensure that every woman and child in Abia lives in a safe and dignified environment.

Delivering a keynote speech, Professor Marvel Onwuka of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, lamented that the maltreatment of women in families and various communities has negatively affected the academic and social behaviour of children.

She raised the alarm that some students in Nigerian universities are afraid to return to their parents’ homes before and after graduation because of unresolved conflicts between their fathers and mothers.

Earlier, in her opening remarks, the Chairperson of FIDA in Abia State, Aniawonwa Njideka, called for the timely and cost-free application of laws to protect women and children from harmful societal practices and also solicited expanded legal access for victims of abuse.

Other participants at the event demanded the thorough implementation and enforcement of existing laws to protect vulnerable women and children in Abia.
