2027: Our mandate won’t be stolen – Ex-PDP guber candidate, Odii joins race

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has declared his intention to re- contest the 2027 gubernatorial race under the platform of the PDP, saying  his mandate cannot be stolen again.

Odii said he is contesting the Ebonyi State governorship position because there has not been any improvement in the lives of the people and the economy of the state.

The PDP Chieftain, who spoke to journalists after he submitted his nomination forms and was successfully screened by the PDP’s screening panel at the Legacy House, Abuja, said, ” Ebonyi State requires leadership ” at this critical time.

He claimed that since the 2023 general election, poverty has rather increased in Ebonyi despite the huge federal allocations that have accrued to the state, noting that Ebonyi urgently needs someone with the capacity for “economic and human capital development.”

Odii said, “Poverty and insecurity have continued to increase in Ebonyi State, and that is why we have decided to get it right this time.”

The politician noted that for democracy to grow, there has to be a strong opposition, noting that any opposition with constructive ideas is welcome.

He insisted that any government or society that says there should be no opposition is a dictatorship and will not be allowed in Ebonyi State.

“So we have come today to let the whole world know that ‘Anyichuks’ is now running to be the governor of Ebonyi State.

“When they are talking about ‘you are not from North, you are not from Izzi, and all that, I am from Ebonyi State, before Izzi, before Onicha local government, the day I was born, I was born as somebody from Ebonyi State.  Ebonyi State is not going to be governed on the basis of clannish politics,” he said.

Odii, who expressed confidence that he will secure the PDP ticket at the primary election, also assured the PDP and his supporters that their mandate will not be stolen again in 2027.

Foreign Illegal Miners, Terror Financiers, Handed To NSA — Alake

The Federal Government’s crackdown on illegal mining has taken a national security turn, with foreign nationals suspected of funding terrorism now in the custody of security authorities.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, disclosed on Friday that foreigners arrested for illegal mining and linked to terror financing have been handed over to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for further investigation.

Alake made the revelation while fielding questions from Channels Television in Abuja, amid concerns raised by some United States lawmakers over alleged links between illegal Chinese mining operations and terrorism funding in Nigeria.

Though he did not specify the number of foreign nationals handed over to the NSA, the minister disclosed that over 327 persons, including foreign nationals, have been apprehended for illegal mining, with about 142 of them facing prosecution and about 3,000 mining licences revoked.

“We had to cleanse and sanitise the sector. To date, we’ve revoked over 3,000 licences,” he said adding that the move was intended to signal that “it is no longer business as usual” in the mining industry.

Alake also disclosed that about 2,500 mining marshals recruited from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)have been deployed nationwide to combat illegal mining.

Speaking further on sector reforms at the Solid Minerals Excellence Awards in Abuja, the minister said the government was promoting local value addition to boost industrialisation, job creation and revenue generation, noting that mining companies would now be required to process minerals locally instead of exporting raw materials.

According to him, the reforms had significantly improved revenue generation. He attributed the successes recorded in the sector including revenue growth from N6bn in 2023 to over N70bn as of December 2025 to the reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

He likened this reforms to a difficult but necessary process while maintaining that the administration’s policies would reverse years of systemic corruption and weak institutional oversight.

“Restructuring comes with pain, but after the gestational period, the results will begin to manifest,” he said.

The minister also praised President Tinubu for demonstrating what he described as the three critical attributes of leadership needed to transform Nigeria.

“You can only reset a country when you are lucky to have a leader that combines the three most critical attributes of leadership , vision, knowledge and courage.

“A lot of the economic reforms going on today in Nigeria are not policies nobody knew were necessary. Previous leaders identified them but lacked the courage to implement them because of political considerations,” he stated.

He added that the administration’s reforms were aimed at repositioning Nigeria economically and politically, stressing that the country’s vast human and natural resources had long been undermined by poor leadership and mismanagement.

Highlighting policy direction, Alake said the ministry had “crafted a seven-point agenda to plug leakages and block loopholes in the sector.”

He also urged operators to adopt the right mental attitude and develop a social conscience to drive the sector to greater heights.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu had earlier raised concerns over the continued plundering of mineral resources across West Africa, warning of its implications for regional stability.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Annual General Meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa, the president called for urgent international action.

“I believe the time has come for us to designate resource theft, mining, and stealing of minerals in the region as an international crime that threatens regional stability and galvanise the world against threats from stolen minerals from West Africa,” he said.

According to him, the cases of vandalism have, however, reduced significantly in 2026 following stronger collaboration with host communities and improved surveillance by TCN officials.

“This year, with the support of communities and the proactiveness of our staff, we have been able to reduce vandalism cases to about 40,” Adeonipekun said.

Adeonipekun explained that TCN has continued to intensify measures aimed at protecting power infrastructure, noting that community engagement remains one of the company’s major strategies in tackling vandalism.

He added that vandalism incidents within the South-West have remained relatively low, while commending the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and security agencies for their support in efforts to apprehend offenders.

Also speaking, the Principal Manager, Lines, Engr. Kuye Emmanuel, said TCN had strengthened surveillance around transmission facilities through community-based security arrangements.

According to him, private vigilantes are engaged and paid monthly across communities and zones to safeguard transmission lines and report suspicious activities.

He added that the company also provides incentives to farmers and residents in host communities to encourage cooperation and timely information sharing.

NHRC questions Air Force over rising civilian deaths in airstrikes

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the Nigerian Air Force to urgently explain the continuous reported airstrikes that have allegedly led to civilian deaths in different parts of the country, warning that the pattern of the incidents raises serious human rights and accountability concerns.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Tony Ojukwu, said the commission is increasingly worried about what it described as repeated loss of civilian lives during military aerial operations conducted in the course of counter-insurgency and anti-banditry campaigns.

He noted that while the Federal Government has a duty to combat insecurity across the country, such operations must be carried out within the limits of the law and in line with international humanitarian standards that protect civilians.

According to him, reports of deaths and injuries involving women, children and other vulnerable persons during airstrikes point to potential breaches of the right to life and human dignity, which he said cannot be ignored.

Ojukwu questioned why similar incidents continue to occur despite earlier public concern and assurances that operational procedures would be reviewed to avoid civilian harm.

He cited several reported cases recorded between April and May, including incidents at Jilli Market in Yobe State, Shiroro Market in Niger State, and Tumfa Market in Zamfara State, describing them as part of a troubling trend that demands urgent attention.

He asked, “Why does this keep happening, and for how long will Nigerians continue to witness such tragedies?”

The NHRC stressed that key principles of warfare including distinction between combatants and civilians, proportionality in the use of force, and necessity must guide every military action, especially in communities where civilians are exposed to danger.

It warned that civilian population must never be treated as unintended losses in security operations.

The commission further urged the Nigerian Air Force to provide a detailed explanation of the incidents and clarify what measures are in place to prevent a repeat of such tragedies.

It also called for independent and transparent investigations into all reported cases of civilian casualties, insisting that affected families deserve justice, compensation, and adequate support.
