Long-time lawmaker Sa’idu Yusuf Miga loses return ticket in Jigawa APC primary

A major political upset has emerged in Jigawa State following the defeat of long-time federal lawmaker Hon. Sa’idu Yusuf Miga in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Miga, who represents the Jahun/Miga Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, lost the party’s return ticket during the APC primaries conducted on Saturday, bringing an end to his nearly two-decade presence in the National Assembly.

The lawmaker first entered the House of Representatives in 2003 under the platform of the defunct New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) before joining the APC during the 2014 merger that led to the formation of the ruling party.

He subsequently secured re-election in 2015, 2019, and 2023, making him one of the longest-serving lawmakers from Jigawa State.

However, reports of growing dissatisfaction among constituents over alleged poor representation and a lack of impactful constituency projects weakened his political standing in Jahun and Miga local government areas.

Critics also questioned his legislative performance, alleging that he had not sponsored major bills since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June 2023.

Public frustration became more pronounced earlier this month when a coalition of youths under the banner “Jahun Ina Muka Dosa” staged a peaceful protest demanding his replacement.

The group, led by youth leaders including Shamsu Sulaiman Alafin, Nura Wada, and Comrade Muhammad Khamisu Harbo, submitted complaints to the APC leadership and Governor Umar Namadi, accusing the lawmaker of failing to address infrastructural challenges, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment in the constituency.

“We need a more active and result-oriented representative who understands the needs of the people,” one of the youth leaders said during the protest.

Following the primary election, the APC replaced Miga with Hon. Umar Imam, who will now fly the party’s flag for the Jahun/Miga Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 elections.

Four soldiers injured as troops survive IED blast, ambush in Borno

Four soldiers were injured on Saturday after troops on patrol survived an improvised explosive device (IED) blast and a subsequent ambush along the Damboa–Kumala–Maiduguri supply route in Borno State.

The incident was disclosed by security expert Zagazola Makama in a post on his X handle on Sunday.

According to the post, the attack occurred at about 11:45 am on May 16, roughly nine kilometres from Kumala Junction in Konduga Local Government Area.

Troops of 25 Brigade, who were on a dominance patrol along the strategic highway, reportedly encountered a command-detonated IED planted by suspected terrorists before coming under ambush.

The troops were said to have fought through the attack, although four soldiers sustained injuries during the engagement.

Reinforcements from the brigade headquarters, alongside an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, were later deployed to the area to secure the route and support ongoing operations.

The EOD team subsequently discovered and safely neutralised another suspected IED planted along the same axis.

Security sources also disclosed that troops safely escorted 89 civilian vehicles through the corridor, while 165 others were turned back to Damboa as a precautionary measure due to the threat posed by the attack.

Ekiti APC NASS Primary: Akinlayo calls for results cancellation, demands fresh poll

The All Progressives Congress, APC, House of Representatives primaries in Ekiti State have come to a close, producing winners across various federal constituencies while also leaving room for contestations and further clarifications in some areas.

From the results officially announced, Hon. Fatoba Olusola emerged victorious in Ado-Irepodun Federal Constituency, while Hon. Karounwi Oladapo secured the mandate for Ijero, Ekiti West, and Efon Federal Constituency. In Ekiti East, Emure, and Gbonyin Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Femi Bamisile once again demonstrated his political strength and grassroots acceptance by clinching the party’s ticket.

Similarly, Hon. Toyin Okoro was declared winner for Ikere, Ekiti South West, and Ise-Orun Federal Constituency, while Hon. Kunle Ibrahim Olarewaju emerged as the candidate for Ilejemeje, Ido-Osi, and Moba Federal Constituency.

However, the situation in Oye-Ikole Federal Constituency (Ekiti North) remains unresolved, as the contest between Hon. Akin Rotimi and Hon. Bimbo Daramola has been declared inconclusive, signalling the need for further electoral processes or party intervention to determine a clear winner.

In a significant development, Hon. Akinlayo Davison Kolawole, the member representing Ekiti North Federal Constituency II, has strongly rejected the purported results announced for the constituency. He described the outcome as unacceptable, alleging irregularities and questioning the credibility of the process conducted by the returning officer. According to him, the exercise did not reflect the true will of party members and was marred by actions inconsistent with democratic principles.

Hon. Akinlayo reaffirmed his commitment to justice, fairness, and due process, insisting that the mandate freely given by the people must not be subverted. He called on the party leadership and relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the conduct of the primary and ensure that the right thing is done in the interest of democracy and the integrity of the APC.

This development underscores the importance of transparency, internal democracy, and credibility in party primaries. As the APC prepares for the general elections, it is imperative that all grievances are addressed promptly and fairly to foster unity and strengthen the party’s chances at the polls.

The voice of the people must remain supreme, and every legitimate vote must count.
