IPMAN Seeks Establishment Of Oil, Gas Bank

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has advocated for the establishment of an oil and gas bank, also known as a petroleum energy bank.

The National Publicity Secretary of IPMAN, Mr Chinedu Ukadike, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, such a bank would provide easier access to credit facilities and help stabilise the oil sector.

He identified inadequate financing, high interest rates, price volatility and limited supply sources as major challenges confronting independent marketers in the downstream oil sector following the removal of fuel subsidy.

According to him, the subsidy removal led to a sharp increase in the cost of petroleum products, placing heavy financial pressure on marketers.

He explained that the cost of purchasing 45,000 litres of petroleum products rose from about N8 million to over N50 million after deregulation.

“It made it difficult for many independent marketers to sustain operations. One of the major challenges in the oil sector is financing for independent marketers.

“Immediately after the subsidy removal the monetary value of products increased by over 400 per cent,” he said.

Chinedu further explained that many marketers now pull resources to buy products from depots to keep their filling stations running.

He also decried what he described as unhealthy competition among depot owners, importers and independent marketers.

He alleged that some importers sell petroleum products at lower prices in their own retail outlets while selling at higher rates to independent marketers, and made it difficult for them to compete.

Chinedu further said that deregulation had triggered price instability, exposing marketers to heavy losses whenever prices dropped before products reached their filling stations.

“Before you get products to your station the price may have crashed and you lose your investment. That is why many marketers now buy in smaller quantities,” he said.

He added that dependence on a limited number of suppliers had weakened competition in the market.

He further said the rehabilitation of more refineries would create alternatives for marketers and improve pricing.

Chinedu also pointed to regional price disparities, particularly between the northern and southern parts of the country.

He said marketers face varying operational and transportation costs.

According to him, independent marketers are also exposed to product adulteration issues, harassment and losses linked to imported petroleum products.

“We are exposed to pollution, we are exposed to harassment, and we are also exposed to bad importation of petroleum products.

“When petroleum products are being imported, and we go and buy, at the end of the day, our managers will be arrested and will spend a lot of money,” he said.

In spite of the challenges, he maintained that IPMAN members were adapting to the realities of deregulation and expanding their retail operations.

“Marketers who are supposed to be a beautiful pride in a deregulated economy are no longer so because we have only one source of petroleum product, suppliers. So, whenever the suppliers sneeze there is a problem.

On whether marketers were benefiting from subsidy removal, Chinedu said the association was still adjusting its business strategies to survive in the new market environment.

“I would not say yes we are benefiting from the subsidy removal but we are trying to adjust our market strategy to see how we can benefit,” he said.

  • DHQ dismisses claims of terrorist base in South-West

DHQ dismisses claims of terrorist base in South-West

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has refuted reports suggesting the existence of a terrorist stronghold in the South-West, insisting that security operations currently underway are focused on rescuing abducted victims and eliminating criminal elements behind recent attacks.

The clarification was made on Tuesday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja.

Onoja stated that the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, had expressed sympathy to the government and people of Oyo State, as well as families affected by the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

He condemned the attack on the schools, describing the abduction of innocent children and staff members as unacceptable and criminal.

According to him, the Armed Forces have deployed all necessary resources and personnel to secure the safe and unconditional release of the victims.

“The full weight of the Armed Forces is being brought to bear to ensure the safe return of all abducted victims,” he said.

The defence spokesman appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, united and continue to support security agencies with useful and credible intelligence.

Onoja disclosed that the military had previously carried out extensive clearance operations within the Old Oyo National Park, where criminal elements operating in the area were neutralised.

He maintained that intelligence available to security agencies does not support claims that there is an organised terrorist base operating within the South-West region.

“The incident in Oyo State remains an isolated criminal act and does not indicate the presence of an entrenched insurgent structure in the region.

“The Armed Forces caution against narratives capable of creating unnecessary panic or emboldening criminal elements,” he stated.

He further revealed that troops had already established contact with the abductors and were sustaining pursuit operations across forest routes in a bid to rescue the victims.

According to him, joint security operations involving other agencies and local vigilante groups are ongoing to flush out criminal elements and restore normalcy in the affected communities.

Onoja stressed that cooperation from residents remained vital to the success of the ongoing operations, noting that timely human intelligence would greatly assist rescue efforts.

“The Armed Forces will not relent until all abducted victims are rescued and those responsible are brought to justice,” he added.

  • Coalition Of 1,500 Groups Endorses Tinubu For Re-Election

Coalition Of 1,500 Groups Endorses Tinubu For Re-Election

A coalition of political support groups under the Tinubu Mega Group has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election.

Tinubu is going for his second term in office in an election to be held in 2027.

The group gave the endorsement on Tuesday in Abuja where coalition members declared that Nigerians were “choosing continuity over confusion and progress over propaganda.”

The group staged a ‘National Unity Rally’ in Abuja, drawing supporters from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to make their declaration in support of the president.

Organisers said the rally brought together over 1,500 organisations, including professional bodies, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, artisans, traders, religious leaders and grassroots mobilisers.

Addressing the gathering, the National Spokesperson of the Tinubu Mega Group, Tijani Danjuma, said the mobilisation reflected growing nationwide support for the President and his reform agenda.

“To those spreading false narratives and attempting to create division, our answer is simple — the people have spoken. Nigerians are choosing continuity over confusion and progress over propaganda,” Danjuma declared.

He said the coalition was presenting what it described as the endorsement of “20 million Nigerians” for another four years of the Tinubu administration, insisting that ongoing economic reforms needed time and consistency to produce results.

According to him, despite prevailing economic hardship and global economic pressures, the administration had demonstrated courage in confronting long-standing structural challenges facing the country.

Danjuma highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, local refining initiatives, social intervention programmes and economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and attracting investment.

“The student loan programme has opened new opportunities for young Nigerians. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen the naira, improve food production, and reposition the economy for long-term growth,” he said.

The rally comes amid growing political realignments and early mobilisation by support groups ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political actors already positioning themselves despite the elections being more than a year away.

Tinubu, who was elected in 2023 under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, has repeatedly defended his administration’s economic reforms, describing them as necessary measures to rescue the economy from fiscal instability and mounting debt obligations.

Since assuming office, the administration has implemented major policy changes, including the removal of petrol subsidy on his inauguration day and the unification of the foreign exchange market.

The policies triggered significant increases in fuel prices, transportation costs and inflation, leading to widespread economic hardship across the country.
