Ohanaeze mobilizes traders, youths, others for massive PVC registration in Abia

The Apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has staged a rally for transporters, traders and youths in Aba, Abia State urging them to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise, to have a greater stake in the nation’s electoral process.

Addressing the gathering including government workers, the Abia State President of Ohaneze,
Chukwuemeka Okwuonu, said the Igbos will make a statement that will bring respect back to the region come 2027.

Okwuonu stressed that no Igbo parents should allow their male and female adults who are up to 18 m waste the opportunity of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, as the region will use its real population to prove a point in Nigeria.

“Your voters card is your power. The national president has made PVC compulsory for all Igbo adults. Our population is huge and we must make a statement this time around.

“We must take back our pride of place this time around. We are doing this sensitization in Aba for a reason because Aba is the home of all Igbos,” he said.

The Abia president of Ohanaeze added that henceforth, Igbos will begin to reward their sons and daughters who are doing well in political positions and will equally payback those who misused the opportunities given to them by voting them out.

“I charge you today to go out and pick your PVC. We’ll use our PVCs to reward our sons and daughters who are doing well in elective positions and equally use them to remove the people who are not serious.

“People who think that Igbos are small do not know us very well. We shall prove to everyone that we are more populated that they know. today, in any part of Nigeria, when you count the indigenous population, the next people are the Igbos. So, when we aggregate all our people we’ll make a statement that will shake this country,” Okwuonu declared.

Speaking earlier, President of the Socio-Cultural group, Aba South LGA, Uche Wogu, urged all Igbos that their PVC is their power and right to determine who will govern them.

He reminded the gathering that those in government are like employees of the electorate who can use their PVC to replace whoever they want.

“It’s not fair for us to have youths that are already 18 years and they’re not registered to decide their future. So, what we’re here for today is to sensitise our people to get involved.

“As long as you’re an Igbo person, you’re part of Ohanaeze. Whether you’re a trader, keke rider, okada rider, bus driver and whatsoever, you’re part of us and we need you to get registered and be part of what’s happening.”he said.

Wogu urged Igbo youths not to relax in the social media ranting, saying that there is no place of taking power from the social media.

“An election is not done on social media. There’s no polling unit on Facebook, WhatsApp or all the social media. We must get involved by getting registered,”he added.

‘Primaries was demonstration of Craze’- Vatsa faults APC Primaries in Niger

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa, has strongly criticised the just concluded National Assembly primaries of the party, describing the exercise as a “facade” and a “mockery of democracy,” warning that the party risks internal collapse if urgent reforms are not undertaken.

Vatsa, a former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Niger State and pioneer Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, made the remarks in Minna on Wednesday while reacting to the outcome of the senatorial and House of Representatives primaries held across the state and other parts of the country.

He said the exercise left behind a trail of disappointment, allegations and credibility concerns, insisting that the ruling party had failed to learn from past political mistakes that continue to affect governance and internal democracy in Nigeria.

“What transpired during the just concluded National Assembly primaries can best be described as what the late Afrobeat legend, Fela, would call a ‘demonstration of craze’,” Vatsa declared.

According to him, reports of massive financial inducement allegedly dominated the process, with claims that some aspirants spent as much as ₦150 million in pursuit of party tickets through what he described as a deeply flawed and manipulated system.

He alleged that despite the heavy financial and political investments made by aspirants, many were left disappointed as the process allegedly failed to reflect fairness, transparency, or genuine democratic competition.

“The irony is unavoidable because many of the aspirants now lamenting the outcome were among those who maintained silence when some of us raised serious concerns over exclusion, manipulation and political neglect,” he said.

Vatsa further lamented that the APC, which came to power in 2015 on the promise of transparency and anti-corruption, had now deviated from its founding principles. All what we campaigned against in 2015 that earned us the confidence of Nigerians, we are now doing worse than that, and this is quite unfortunate.”

“As a pioneer member of this party, I never envisaged this level of manipulation that has characterised the primaries so far. It is unacceptable,” the party chieftain added.

He warned that failure to urgently reconcile aggrieved members and restore confidence in the party’s internal processes could lead to widespread disaffection and anti-party activities ahead of the general elections.

Vatsa also urged the party leadership to acknowledge flaws in its internal democracy, drawing a parallel with the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who admitted that the system that brought him to power was faulty, insisting that the APC must confront its internal challenges honestly in order to regain public trust.

  • NDLEA Arrests Mexicans, Nigerians In N480bn Meth Bust

NDLEA Arrests Mexicans, Nigerians In N480bn Meth Bust

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has dismantled a transnational methamphetamine production syndicate allegedly operated by a Nigerian drug cartel in collaboration with Mexican nationals, recovering illicit substances valued at over N480bn and arresting 10 suspects.

The breakthrough was disclosed on Wednesday during a media briefing in Abuja by the Chairman of the NDLEA, Buba Marwa, who described the operation as a major blow against transnational organised crime.

The operations, conducted across Ogun State and Lagos State within 48 hours, led to the discovery of a large-scale methamphetamine laboratory hidden in a forest in Ijebu, the arrest of suspected cartel members including three Mexican nationals, and the seizure of over 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals.

According to Marwa, the syndicate in Ijebu was not only trafficking drugs but also manufacturing “industrial-scale quantities” of methamphetamine within Nigeria, posing serious threats to public health and national security.

“Through a clinical, simultaneous operation executed by the elite operatives of our SOU, we have successfully dismantled a sophisticated, transnational methamphetamine production syndicate run jointly by a Nigerian drug cartel and their Mexican counterparts,” Marwa said.

Marwa said that the primary target was a remote farm located at Abidagba forest, in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

“At this laboratory, we apprehended seven key members of the cartel processing illicit substances. Most notably, the operation confirms our intelligence regarding the importation of foreign technical expertise by local cartels.”

He added that among those arrested were three Mexican nationals allegedly brought into Nigeria specifically to manufacture methamphetamine, alongside four Nigerian collaborators.

According to the NDLEA chairman, the operation followed months of intelligence gathering before operatives of the agency’s Special Operations Unit launched coordinated raids on May 16 across Ogun and Lagos states.

Marwa further disclosed that another tactical team simultaneously raided the Lekki residence of the alleged cartel kingpin at Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lagos, where investigators recovered the passports and mobile phones of the arrested Mexican nationals.

He added that follow-up operations later led operatives to another property in Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, where another suspected member of the syndicate was arrested.

The NDLEA said the crackdown led to the arrest of 10 suspects in total, including the alleged cartel leader, three Mexican nationals, and six Nigerian collaborators.

According to the agency, operatives recovered 2,419.48 kilogrammes of crystallised and liquid methamphetamine, precursor chemicals, and industrial solvents allegedly used for drug production.

Marwa said the seized drugs were valued at about $362.9m in the international market.

“This translates to over N480bn Imagine this humongous amount in the control of criminal elements!”

He added that the quantity recovered represented millions of street doses capable of causing widespread addiction, violence, and psychological damage.

“To put this in perspective, the 2,419.48 kilogrammes of finished and liquid methamphetamine seized represents millions of street doses that would have flooded our local communities and international markets, causing untold destruction, psychosis, and violence,” the NDLEA chairman said.

The agency also recovered a Toyota Tacoma allegedly used for operations at the meth laboratory and a Toyota Highlander seized from the residence of the suspected kingpin.

Marwa warned that the NDLEA was monitoring the growing trend of local cartels bringing in foreign specialists from South America to establish drug production facilities in rural communities across the country.

Nigeria continues to battle widespread drug trafficking and illicit drug production, with the NDLEA intensifying operations against local and transnational cartels.

In April, NDLEA operatives raided three illicit drug warehouses in Lagos and recovered opioids valued at N16.9bn.

  • Atiku, Amaechi Unveil Governance Plans At ADC Presidential Screening

Atiku, Amaechi Unveil Governance Plans At ADC Presidential Screening

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday appeared before the Presidential Screening Panel of the African Democratic Congress, where he presented what he described as a comprehensive economic rescue blueprint and a bold security agenda ahead of the party’s presidential nomination process.

Atiku, in a document he submitted to the panel, said the screening exercise provided him with an opportunity to outline practical solutions to Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.

The former vice president said the country was grappling with economic stagnation, rising unemployment, institutional decline, and growing insecurity, insisting that urgent and decisive leadership was required to reverse the trend.

He lamented the hardship facing many Nigerians, noting that families and businesses were struggling under what he described as policy uncertainty and declining investor confidence.

According to him, his economic recovery plan would focus on job creation, expansion of the private sector, fiscal discipline, stable macroeconomic management, and policies aimed at restoring investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.

“Nigeria cannot continue on the current trajectory where families struggle daily under crushing hardship, businesses collapse under policy uncertainty, and investor confidence continues to erode in the absence of coherent economic leadership,” Atiku stated.

On insecurity, the presidential aspirant expressed concern over persistent killings, kidnappings, and attacks across the country, saying no responsible government should allow citizens to remain vulnerable to criminal violence.

He said his proposed security framework would prioritise intelligence-driven operations, improved collaboration among security agencies, decentralised policing structures, and firm political resolve to combat criminality.

“At this defining moment in our national life, Nigeria does not need experiments. It needs tested leadership, clarity of vision, and the courage to make difficult but necessary decisions in the national interest,” he said.

Atiku also reaffirmed his commitment to building what he described as a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria where citizens can pursue opportunities in peace and dignity.

Another aspirant, Rotimi Amaechi, who also appeared before the screening panel, declared the existing federal character principle as unworkable, saying that the practice has outlived its usefulness.

He vowed to replace federal character with competency and meritocracy if elected president in 2027.

Amaechi, who was the third and the last aspirant to be screened by the panel, dismissed calls for him to step down for any other aspirant in the race for the ADC presidential ticket.

“We are going for primaries,” he told journalists shortly after he concluded his session with the panel and left the venue without further comments.
