  • NIMASA confirms oil spill after vessel collision, five injured

NIMASA confirms oil spill after vessel collision, five injured

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has confirmed an oil spill in the Bonny Channel area of Rivers State following a collision involving two vessels.

The agency disclosed that the incident occurred around Latitude 4.512375 and Longitude 7.189429, resulting in oil pollution within the affected marine corridor.

NIMASA’s Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, made this known in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.

According to Edward, the Deep Blue Forward Operating Base in Bonny received a distress alert at about 11:30 a.m. concerning the collision.

He identified the vessels involved as MV Valparaiso, a Singapore-flagged container ship with IMO Number 9433054, and MT Lady Martina, a Nigerian-flagged tanker transporting petroleum products.

Edward said the Deep Blue Base swiftly deployed 10 armed operatives aboard interceptor boat DB 214 to the scene for emergency response operations.

He added that five crew members onboard MT Lady Martina sustained different degrees of injuries during the incident.

The injured victims were reportedly evacuated to the sickbay at the Forward Operating Base in Bonny, where they received immediate medical attention.

“Following the collision, MT Lady Martina drifted ashore and is currently aground along the Bonny Channel.

“MV Valparaiso also remains grounded at the Bonny Inner Anchorage pending damage assessment and further investigation,” Edward stated.

He further disclosed that shipping company MAERSK had formally notified the agency about the incident.

Edward said the Director-General of NIMASA, Dayo Mobereola, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of the collision.

According to him, the agency has also activated a Situation Monitoring Room to coordinate emergency response activities and monitor developments surrounding the incident.

Mobereola was said to have visited Rivers State personally to inaugurate the monitoring room and supervise ongoing response efforts.

The NIMASA boss also directed the agency’s Marine Environment Management Department to immediately commence an Environmental Impact Assessment of the affected area.

He urged relevant officials to take urgent steps to contain the Tier One oil sheen and minimise damage to the marine environment.

  • 2027: Obey court order, revise election timetable immediately – CUPP to INEC

2027: Obey court order, revise election timetable immediately – CUPP to INEC

The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to adhere to the significant ruling delivered by Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court on Thursday, which invalidated its deadline for political parties.

CUPP stated that the ruling had transformed the electoral landscape for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The Nigerian political parties called on INEC to promptly comply with the court’s decision by revising its timetable to reflect the judgment.

CUPP remarked in a statement signed by Chief Peter Ameh, its Acting National Chairman that, “The court’s decisions have broadened the democratic framework by providing political parties with increased flexibility in managing their internal matters.”

DAILY POST also reports that key aspects of the ruling include the allowance for politicians who have lost primary elections to switch to another party and still be validly replaced as candidates, the annulment of the 21-day party registration requirement, the exemption of substitution primaries from stringent Electoral Act deadlines, and the confirmation that INEC cannot impose specific dates for internal party activities or unilaterally reduce submission and publication periods.

Ameh stated, “We commend the Federal High Court for this forward-thinking and constitutionally aligned ruling. INEC must promptly comply with this decision and adjust its timetable accordingly.

“Any move to appeal this ruling will only lead to unnecessary confusion, diminish public trust, and compromise the integrity of the 2027 general elections.”

Chief Ameh further revealed that 14 political parties have agreed to announce extended election timetables to accommodate new defectors and ensure a more inclusive nomination process in accordance with the court’s ruling.

The parties underscored that the judgment enhances internal democracy, fosters party independence, and safeguards the rights of aspirants and candidates.

  • Epelle, Ordu Clashes Over Fubara, Wike Rift On National TV

Epelle, Ordu Clashes Over Fubara, Wike Rift On National TV

A heated exchange unfolded on News Central TV on Thursday, May 21, 2026, as human rights activist and Founder of TAF Africa, Dr. Jake Epelle, strongly disagreed with comments made by PDP chieftain Collins Ordu regarding the political rift involving Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Epelle, while responding to Ordu during the live interview, said his comments were not driven by hatred for Wike, stressing that he still acknowledged the minister’s contributions in some areas.

“Let me tell you that I don’t hate Wike. Wike, he has his own good side. As a matter of fact, what you don’t even know is that Wike signed the second policy that I did, the first policy, the albinism policy. So I owe him gratitude,” Epelle stated.

The activist, however, challenged claims that Governor Fubara was ungrateful to Wike, arguing that several political figures who previously supported Wike eventually fell out with him.

“Talking about gratitude you mentioned, Fubara wasn’t grateful. Can I take you down memory lane? The former governor of Rivers State, Odili, was grateful, was gracious to Wike, made him SA. Wike disappointed him. Goodluck Jonathan and the wife made him minister. Amaechi made him chief of staff. How grateful was he to Amaechi?” he asked.

Epelle further alleged that Wike no longer maintained relationships with many of the political figures who contributed to his rise in politics. “Everybody that has helped Wike to climb, everybody, today, Wike is against them, and not even in talking terms. Who is more an ingrate in comparison to Fubara?” he said.

According to him, Governor Fubara had endured intense political pressure since assuming office. “Fubara had taken a lot that even me, I would not take. As a matter of fact, what I think he should have done a long time ago is to resign from his position as the governor of Rivers State, because he was totally, absolutely ungovernable. They made life miserable for that young man,” Epelle stated.

He also rejected claims that Wike alone was responsible for Fubara’s emergence as governor, insisting that the mandate came from the people of Rivers State. “It wasn’t Wike who voted him. It was the people of Rivers State that voted him. It was the people of Rivers State that gave him mandate. It was not even the president, Bola Tinubu,” he added.

Epelle also responded to claims that Rivers State only recently experienced instability, arguing that political unrest existed during Wike’s administration as governor. “You talk about peace not being in Rivers State. During the times of Wike, there was anarchy. But because he’s almost a tyrant, he was able to contend some of them the way and manner he wanted,” he said.

He concluded by cautioning against turning public discussions into personal attacks while reiterating his respect for Ordu despite their disagreement. “So don’t come on national television and we want to wash our dirty linen. Again, I respect him. As an elder statesman, I’m not here to abuse him. No, I’m stating the obvious,” Epelle said.
