The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports that the Federal Government has suspended payment of students’ upkeep allowances under the student loan scheme.

NELFUND described the publications, including a purported statement credited to the agency, as fake and misleading.

In a statement on Thursday, the Fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, said the reports were designed to create panic, confusion and distrust among beneficiaries and the public.

It also clarified that a viral newspaper cover being circulated on social media was AI-generated and not an authentic publication.

“The publications in circulation did not originate from NELFUND or any authorized government channel,” the statement said.

NELFUND urged beneficiaries, stakeholders and members of the public to disregard the reports and rely only on verified information released through its official communication channels and credible media platforms.

It also cautioned against sharing unverified content capable of spreading misinformation and causing unnecessary anxiety among students and parents nationwide.

Russia would have lost Ukraine war without China – Ex-MI6 chief

Intelligence officer and former MI6 chief Richard Moore has credited China for Russia’s continued military operations and resistance in the four-year Ukraine war.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Moore observed many appear to be oblivious to Beijing’s support for Moscow in their analysis of the combat.

The diplomat said the focus of Russia’s external assistance and headlines has been about the Iranian shahed drones and troops sent by North Korea.

“Without China, Russia would have lost. It’s as simple as that,” Moore emphasized. “The thing that keeps Putin in Ukraine is Chinese support.”

The former Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service head listed such aid as Chinese chemicals and components that go into Russia’s artillery and drones.

More, now a senior advisor in the private sector, insists “the most urgent issue is Ukraine,” if the international community intends to push back against China and Russia.

He, however, highlighted the dominance of unmanned aerial vehicles in the Ukrainian conflict, saying 80-90% of battlefield casualties are caused by drones.

Moore led MI6 from 2020 until he stepped down in September 2025. He was succeeded by Blaise Metrewel, the first female head of the agency in its history.

I never promised to release Nnamdi Kanu from prison – Abia APC candidate, Opah

The 2027 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State, Eric Opah, has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that he promised to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu if elected governor of Abia State.

In the report, Eric Opah was quoted as saying:

“I will set Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free once I become Governor of Abia State in 2027. I said it, and I will do it. I have the capacity, don’t doubt me.”

However, responding to the trending report, the Abia APC candidate described the story as false, misleading, and the handiwork of desperate people.

Speaking through Eric Ikwuagwu, the Director of Media and Publicity of the Eric Opah Campaign Organisation, the APC candidate said the sole aim of the report was to drag his name into unnecessary controversy.

“At no time did Chief Eric Opah make such a statement, either publicly or privately. The fabrication is a clear demonstration of the growing desperation among certain individuals and political actors who have chosen the path of falsehood, propaganda, and character assassination instead of issue-based politics.

“It is highly condemnable that some persons would deliberately manufacture fake quotes and circulate them in an attempt to deceive unsuspecting members of the public and create tension within the polity.

“Chief Eric Opah remains a responsible leader committed to lawful governance, peace, development, and constructive engagement on issues affecting Abia State and the nation at large. He will not be distracted by the antics of mischief-makers and enemies of progress,” the statement said.

The statement further urged members of the public, party faithful, and supporters of the candidate to disregard the fake news.

ADUSTECH cancels students’ excursion to Niger over security concerns

The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) has cancelled a planned students’ excursion to New Bussa in Niger State following security concerns raised by parents and stakeholders.

The university said the decision was taken by the Vice-Chancellor, Musa Tukur Yakasai, after reviewing reports on the security situation in the area where Level 400 Fisheries students were expected to undertake their mandatory field exercise.

A statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, said, “When the idea of going to New Bussa came up, the Vice Chancellor, who was already aware of the security situation, had long rejected the trip.”

The university added that the Department of Fisheries was directed to find a safer alternative.

“The students are now going to Tiga Dam in Kano for the mandatory exercise,” the statement added.

The management stressed that students’ safety remains a top priority.

“The university never jokes with students’ safety and welfare, both within and outside the campus,” Abdullahi said.

“There is no plan to take our students to New Bussa or any other unsecured area,” he said.

The clarification followed concerns raised by parents over the proposed trip to Niger State.
