Viral Video Of Armed Men In Ikorodu Old — Lagos Police

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows the recent arrest of Fulani men in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, describing the footage as outdated and misleading.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, the command said the video relates to an incident that occurred more than three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any other part of Lagos State.

According to the police, the recirculation of the old footage as a recent event is capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear and apprehension among residents.

“The video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three (3) years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement said.

The command urged members of the public to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified information that could undermine public confidence and peace.

It also warned social media users and content creators against the spread of false, unverified and alarmist reports capable of causing public disorder, noting that individuals found deliberately disseminating misinformation or fake news would be investigated and prosecuted in line with existing laws.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai, has ordered sustained and enhanced deployment of police personnel and operational assets to identified black spots, strategic locations and entry and exit points across the state.

The command said the security measures are being implemented in collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure the continued protection of residents and visitors.

It assured Lagos residents that adequate measures have been put in place to safeguard lives and property and encouraged them to go about their lawful activities without fear.

The police also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely, credible and actionable information on suspicious persons, movements or activities within their communities.

According to the command, public cooperation remains vital to preventing crime and strengthening security across the state.

Checks by THE WHISTLER on Sunday on X showed that several users had shared a video alleging the arrest of Fulani men in possession of arms and ammunition.

Insecurity: Hong chairman laments constant Boko Haram attacks in LG

The Chairman of Hong Local Government Council of Adamawa State, Inuwa Usman Wa’aganda, has alerted authorities to the lingering attacks by insurgents on communities in the area.

Hong has in the last one year become the most affected local government area in Adamawa by insurgency, with attacks reported multiple times this month.

During a ceremony in Hong LGA headquarters to honour sons and daughters of the area who are in the military, the council chairman called for decisive steps to halt insurgency attacks.

“Our hearts are heavy because of the insecurity that burdens us,” Wa’aganda said, adding, “Many communities are displaced. This situation is particularly troubling as the farming season begins and farmers are afraid to return to their farmlands.”

He urged the military being honoured at the event to put their heads together, make the necessary contacts, and ensure the return of security to their fatherland.

The grand reception in honour of senior serving and retired military and para-military officers from Hong was organized by the paramount traditional institution in Hong LGA, the Huba Chiefdom.

In his speech, the paramount ruler, the Tol Huba, Alheri Bulus Nyako expressed gratitude to God for the galant military officers that the chiefdom is blessed with. He told the officers, “You have brought honour to us and we are proud of you. We appreciate your sacrifices and that’s why we choose to celebrate you.”

The Tol Huba expressed sadness, however, that his chiefdom has been attacked multiple times in recent months by Boko Haram elements, urging decisive steps by the federal government to halt the menace.

The grand reception which was held at the Hong Township Stadium, attracted prominent sons and daughters from all walks of life, including elder statesmen from the chiefdom, one of them being 82-year-old Major General Haldu Hananiya (rtd) who was the chairman of the occasions.

Speaking, Hananiya said the honour being bestowed on serving and retired military men and women, including those who died while serving the country, acts as tonic for greater national service.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri said the celebrants deserve honour for sacrificing their peace of mind and sometimes their life in service to Nigeria.

The governor who was represented by his Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Istifanus Babadoke, said Adamawa State is proud to have the servicemen and women who have brought honour to the state.

2027: Say no to PDP presidential ticket – Keyamo tells Jonathan

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to say “no thank you” to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, factional presidential ticket.

Keyamo explained that the PDP faction that gave Jonathan the presidential ticket is not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Recall that the Tanimu Turaki-led PDP had announced Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

However, Keyamo urged Jonathan to reject the gesture for the sake of his global image.

Posting on X, Keyamo wrote: “This is some kind of bizarre comedy taken too far by supposedly grown adults and some names that were actually in the corridors of power at some point in this country.

“Giving a whole Presidential ticket to an ex-President and statesman by proxy and by a bunch of people not even registered on INEC’s website.

“And they don’t give a hoot, dragging such a revered figure into their charade that is certainly a journey to nowhere. Quite sad.

“For the sake of his global image, President Goodluck Jonathan must immediately issue a strong ‘no, thank you’ statement, lest Nigerians begin to recall the ‘clueless’ campaign that got him out of power – first sitting President to be so ousted.”

  • Educationalists Explain Why Private Varsities Charge High Fees For Transcripts

Educationalists Explain Why Private Varsities Charge High Fees For Transcripts

Many private universities in Nigeria charge as high as N2m for transcripts because parents use them “as a smooth passage to public universities”.

This is the position of the education resource persons that spoke with THE WHISTLER on Sunday. According to them, the charges are mainly associated with professional courses, such as medicine, law, accounting, nursing and engineering.

Dr Hyacinth Ogene is a consultant educationist. He said most parents use private universities to gain access to public universities with ease. “Students with the minimum approved admission scores by JAMB can be admitted to any course in private universities,” says Dr Ogene. “Some of them resort to private universities when they couldn’t secure admission to their choice course in public universities. Some students could be studying courses like nursing with the minimum admission benchmark of 150. After one year, their parents demand to transfer their children to public universities. It is very easy at that level to secure admission at public universities so far the student is qualified.

“But it is to the disadvantage of private universities. They pay heavily to accrediting bodies. They also have slots from the regulatory bodies, which they can’t exceed. If a private university gives its restricted slot to a candidate, and suddenly the parents want to change his or her university, it is justified that huge levies be imposed. Do you know what it takes to engage professors and senior lecturers at private schools? Some parents are mischievous.”

A lecturer, Dr Maureen Uzosike, advised parents to weigh their incomes before sending their children and wards to private institutions.

“Private universities have some advantages in terms of conducive and unhindered academic activities. But the prices must be paid. Many parents opt out of public universities because of their attendant industrial actions and unstructured academic activities. Most private universities are well-structured that a student has his or her academic calendar, including the day of graduation.
“Private universities also have better facilities, both in structures and ICT. Their students are better regulated. They are also mostly regimented. Parents should check their pockets before making the choice of institutions for their wards. If they simply want to exploit the opportunities to find their ways to public universities, they must pay.”

A parent, Dennis Ogbe, said his child is in a private university in River State. “I pay a lot, but I don’t regret it,” he told our correspondent. “I graduated around 2001. I spent seven years reading a five-year course because of industrial actions. My first son passed the same ordeal. My daughter is now in her third year in the private university; she didn’t miss any year. It’s true it costs a lot to train her, but if one can afford it, it is better inasmuch as such the courses have accreditation. We pray for education-friendly federal and state governments in Nigeria. How can that be achievable when our leaders send their children and awards overseas to study?”
