Beyond the Horses: How Goldberg’s Golden Guard stole the show at Ojude Oba 2026

At Ojude Oba, spectacle is expected. Every year, the festival transforms Ijebu Ode into a vibrant display of culture, fashion, heritage, and pageantry. The horse-riding regiments arrive in their finest attire, families showcase generations of tradition, and thousands gather to witness one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural events.

This year was no different. Yet amid the grandeur of the processions and the colour that filled the streets, one appearance stood out.

Goldberg arrived with the Golden Guard.

Led by cultural influencers Imisi, Kaybobo, and Iremide, the Golden Guard was a striking procession of masked figures dressed in specially designed fashion pieces that blended culture, mystery, and contemporary style. The group created an instant visual spectacle that drew attention from every corner of the venue.

While Goldberg participated in the traditional horse-riding procession that has become synonymous with Ojude Oba, the Golden Guard introduced something different: a fresh interpretation of cultural expression rooted in tradition and unmistakably modern.

Across the festival grounds, Ojude Oba once again delivered the spectacle that has made it one of Nigeria’s most anticipated cultural celebrations. The famous regberegbe age-grade groups arrived in coordinated fabrics and elaborate designs, transforming the venue into a living showcase of Yoruba fashion, craftsmanship, and identity.

The horse-riding processions remained one of the defining attractions of the day. Families with deep historical ties to the festival rode through the arena in grand style, accompanied by drummers, praise singers, and cheering spectators. Each procession brought its own flair, reinforcing the rich traditions that have been passed down through generations.

The festival also attracted an impressive gathering of cultural figures, celebrities, community leaders, and guests from across the country, adding to the energy that filled Ijebu Ode throughout the celebration. The experience was a unique blend of heritage and pageantry that has come to define Ojude Oba.

Goldberg’s presence reflected the same spirit that continues to make the festival special: pride in culture, celebration of identity, and a commitment to keeping tradition alive while embracing new forms of expression.

From the elegance of the horse-riding displays to the creativity of the Golden Guard procession, Goldberg’s participation added another memorable chapter to an event that continues to stand as one of Nigeria’s most enduring cultural showcases.

  • Dangote named Africa’s most admired brand for 8th consecutive year

Dangote named Africa’s most admired brand for 8th consecutive year

Dangote Industries Limited has reinforced its position as Africa’s most influential corporate brands after emerging as the continent’s Most Admired African Brand for the eight consecutive years, while its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, was named among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Chief Marketing Officers.

The recognition was announced at the 16th annual Brand Africa 100: Africa’s Best Brands rankings unveiled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The survey, regarded as Africa’s most comprehensive consumer-led brand study, covered 30 countries representing more than 85 per cent of the continent’s population and economic output.

In the latest rankings, Dangote emerged as Africa’s Most Admired Brand in aided recall, ahead of South Africa’s MTN and Vodacom. In the spontaneous recall category, it ranked second among African brands, behind MTN and ahead of Trade Kings. The Group also retained its position as Africa’s Most Admired Industrial Brand and was ranked the No. 1 African Brand Contributing to a Better Africa, ahead of MTN, DStv, Shoprite/Checkers and Trade Kings, reflecting its significant contribution to industrialisation, job creation, economic development and sustainable growth across the continent.

The rankings show Dangote’s growing influence as one of Africa’s most recognisable corporate brands, built on investments spanning cement, fertiliser, petrochemicals, energy, sugar, salt, packaging and logistics. Brand Africa noted that despite a modest rebound in African brand recognition, homegrown brands still account for only 15 per cent of Africa’s 100 most admired brands, highlighting the continued dominance of foreign brands across the continent.

Dangote representatives — Public Relations Officer, DCP Ethiopia, Bekele Erena (3rd left); Head, HR & Administration, DCP Ethiopia, Eba Ulfata (7th left); Sales & Marketing Manager, DCP Ethiopia, Tariku Alemayehu (8th left); and Country CEO, Dangote Cement Ethiopia, Danilo Trugillo — pose with fellow award recipients during the 16th Brand Africa 100 Awards ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dangote Industries Limited was honoured as Africa’s Most Admired Brand, Most Admired African Brand Doing Good for Society and the Environment, and Most Admired African Industrial Brand.

Brand Africa Founder and Chairman, Thebe Ikalafeng, described the promotion and support of African brands as a critical economic imperative for the continent.

“Converting goodwill towards African contribution into admiration for African brands is the most urgent commercial opportunity for the continent. It is not enough for Africans to believe in Africa, they must buy Made-in-Africa,” he said.

The survey also ranked Dangote among Africa’s leading brands in sustainability and social impact, placing second in the category of brands recognised for doing good for society, people and the environment.

Despite the dominance of global brands across Africa, Dangote has cemented its position as one of the continent’s leading corporate brands, alongside MTN and Ethiopian Airlines. The three emerged as the highest ranked African brands in the 2026 Brand Africa rankings, standing out on a list dominated by global names such as Nike, Adidas, Samsung, Apple and Coca-Cola. The achievement is notable given that African brands accounted for just 15 per cent of the Top 100 rankings, compared with 38 per cent for European brands, 28 per cent for North American brands and 19 per cent for Asian brands.

Further strengthening the Group’s standing, its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, was selected for the inaugural Africa CMO 100 (ACMO100) list, which recognises the continent’s most impactful marketing, brand and reputation leaders.

The ACMO100 initiative, launched by Brand Africa in partnership with African Business magazine, MIPAD and the African Media Agency, honours marketing executives whose work is shaping Africa’s business narrative, strengthening brand equity and driving economic growth across the continent and the diaspora.

Chiejina was among only 20 executives selected from West Africa and one of 17 Nigerians recognised for their contribution to brand building, corporate reputation management and strategic communications.

CEO, Dangote Cement Ethiopia, Danilo Trugillo (centre), receives one of Dangote Industries Limited’s awards from President of the Ethiopian Marketing Professionals Association and Chief Marketing Officer of Population Services International, Fana Abay, as Founder and Chairman of Brand Africa, Thebe Ikalafeng, looks on during the 16th Brand Africa 100 Awards ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dangote Industries Limited was recognised as Africa’s Most Admired Brand, Most Admired African Brand Doing Good for Society and the Environment, and Most Admired African Industrial Brand.

According to Brand Africa, the selection process was based on independent research, industry impact, leadership influence and contribution to the growth of brands that shape consumer perceptions and economic outcomes across Africa.

The latest recognition adds to a growing list of honours for Dangote Industries, which was inducted into the Brand Africa Hall of Fame last year for consistently ranking among Africa’s most admired brands over more than a decade. Its President and Chief Executive, Aliko Dangote, was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for championing industrialisation and building one of Africa’s most successful indigenous enterprises.

  • Daily Times Turns 100: ‘Honouring The Past, Shaping The Future’

Daily Times Turns 100: ‘Honouring The Past, Shaping The Future’

Nigeria’s oldest newspaper will mark a rare milestone tomorrow as the Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN) founded on June 1, 1926, clocks 100 years.

Marking the centenary celebrations, the Management of DTN will hold a press conference on Monday (tomorrow) at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, with a theme titled : “Daily Times is 100 years tomorrow—celebrating 100 years of fearless journalism, championing the future 1926-2026.”

The DTN management led by the publisher, Fidelis Anosike, will unveil a year-long calendar of activities: public lectures, exhibitions of archival front pages, and a digital archive project to put 100 years of Daily Times editions online for researchers and the public.

The banner adds: “100 years honouring the past, shaping the future. 1926-2026: practicing journalism for the people.”

It is instructive to note that Daily Times was started by Richard Barrow and Ernest Ikoli as a four-page daily in colonial Lagos. From that small start, it grew into the nation’s newspaper of record.

In the 1950s, Daily Times published nationalist voices and debates on self-rule. After independence in 1960, it reported every major turning point: the First and Second Republics, the 1966 coups, the Civil War, decades of military rule, and the return to democracy in 1999.

At its peak in the 1970s and 80s, Daily Times had the largest circulation in West Africa. Its Kakawa Street building in Lagos became a landmark. For many families, it was the paper at the breakfast table — carrying election results, public notices, and the stories that shaped public opinion.

It is important to note that the last 25 years have been turbulent. Ownership changes, economic downturns, and digital disruption forced the print edition to scale down. But the brand survived. Today Daily Times publishes in print and online, still holding to its founding mission of journalism “for the people.”

Organizers say the Abuja event is not just about nostalgia. It is a statement of purpose.

“The centenary is about honouring the past, but more importantly, shaping the future,” a senior editor said. “We are 100 years old, but we are not a museum piece. We are championing the future of journalism in Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.”

The NUJ Secretariat was chosen to signal that the anniversary belongs to the entire profession. Expected guests include former Daily Times editors and reporters, media owners, journalism lecturers, students, and press freedom advocates.

The phrase “fearless journalism” anchors how the paper wants to be remembered. It clashed with colonial authorities in the 1950s. During military rule, its editors faced detention for stories that held power to account. In the Fourth Republic, it continued investigative reporting despite shrinking ad revenue and online competition.

“Practicing journalism for the people” is the second pillar. Editors say it means keeping readers at the centre — reporting on government, but also on markets, clinics, schools, and daily life.

“You can change the owners, you can change the format, but if you stop being for the people, you stop being Daily Times,” a veteran reporter who spent 30 years at the paper said.

The centenary comes as Nigerian media face hard realities. Advertising has moved online, audiences are mobile-first, and disinformation spreads fast. Daily Times has had to rebuild its digital newsroom and retrain reporters for multimedia.

At tomorrow’s press conference, management will outline how it will “champion the future: Digital-first newsroom* with data journalism; video, and podcasts to reach younger readers; public digital archive of its 100-year collection for research and education; media literacy projects with schools and the NUJ to help Nigerians spot fake news; training fellowships for young reporters in investigative and solutions journalism.

“The world has changed since 1926,” the editor noted. “But the job has not. People still need reliable information to make decisions. That is what we have done for 100 years, and that is what we will do for the next 100.”

The Publisher/Editor in Chief of the Daily Times, Fidelis Anosike pointed out that “Why 100 Years Matters?”

Anosike said, “Centenaries are rare in African media. Few newspapers reach 100 years, and fewer still are still publishing. For Nigeria, Daily Times at 100 is a living archive. It carried headlines on independence, on July 29 and January 15, 1966, on June 12, 1993, and on May 29, 1999. It also recorded quieter stories: a new bridge, a market fire, a university admission list.

“Tomorrow’s event at the NUJ Secretariat will be brief, but the message is big. Daily Times is not just marking 100 years. It is asking what journalism is for.

As the banner says: “1926-2026, practicing journalism for the people, for a newspaper that has outlasted colonialism, war, and the internet, that mission may be why it is still here at 100.”

  • I have disease that is not curable yet – Obasanjo

I have disease that is not curable yet – Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday revealed that he has been living with diabetes for over 40 years.

According to him, lifestyle discipline, a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, routine medical checkups and strict adherence to prescribed medication have helped him manage the condition for more than four decades.

Obasanjo spoke at the launch of the “Lagos to the World” expedition, a global road journey aimed at promoting cancer awareness, early detection and African integration. The event was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The former president emphasised the value of healthy living and early medical intervention while praising the initiative conceived by entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast, Erik Nwagwu, in memory of his late mother and sister, who died of cancer.

He commended Nwagwu for transforming a personal tragedy into a campaign that could help many people.

Speaking about his own health journey, Obasanjo said, “I have a disease that is not yet curable, and that’s diabetes. I was diagnosed with diabetes more than 40 years ago. I still manage it.”

The former president explained that maintaining a strict lifestyle routine has enabled him to remain physically active despite his age.

“But what do I do? I play squash three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, if I’m around. I watch what I eat.

“Diet can be exciting, can be pleasurable. But if you eat badly, then the consequences can also be bad for you. And then rest,” he said.

According to him, adequate rest is just as important as proper nutrition and exercise, stressing that his approach to healthy living is captured in what he calls “DREMS”.

“So diet, rest and exercise are very, very important. And then there’s what I call DREMS. D for Diet, R for Rest, E for Exercise and M for Medical,” Obasanjo added.

He underlined the significance of early diagnosis and routine medical screening, urging Nigerians to take regular health checkups seriously.

Earlier, Nwagwu explained that the “Lagos to the World” expedition would be carried out in phases, culminating in a round-the-world journey next year.

Nwagwu stated that one of the major objectives of the expedition is to raise awareness about prostate cancer, particularly among African men.

“Prostate cancer, especially among black men, particularly in sub Saharan Africa, is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in males, and many people do not go for testing,” he said.

He disclosed that the initiative, in partnership with Zuri Health, is offering free screenings.

Nwagwu added that strengthening African integration and fostering a positive perception of Nigeria are two other important goals of the mission.

“Africa’s problems should be solved within Africa. And you know the narrative concerning Nigerians and Nigeria. Most of what you see in the press are negative stories. The good ones do not spread as much. There are many Nigerians doing many positive things,” he said.
