  • On Africa Day 2026, UBA Reaffirms Role As Africa’s Premier Continental Bridge

On Africa Day 2026, UBA Reaffirms Role As Africa’s Premier Continental Bridge

Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, marked Africa Day with a group-wide celebration across its offices in 20 African markets, bringing employees together in a shared observance of cultural and continental pride.

For UBA, which has spent over seven decades building operations from Lagos to Nairobi, Accra to Abidjan, Dakar to Douala, and Maputo to Kinshasa, Africa Day served as a moment to reflect on how far the institution has come in terms of impact and the ambition that lies ahead

The day’s wider programme featured cultural showcases, a fashion runway, music and food presentations drawn from the Group’s operating markets, with participation from all 20 countries.

Speaking at the event, UBA Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, drew a direct line between the Group’s pan-African footprint and the wider economic transformation underway across the continent.

“As a Group with presence in 20 African countries, UBA is more than a bank. We are a bridge across markets, cultures, people and opportunities,” Alawuba said. “Every day, through our people, our technology, our capital and our customer relationships, we connect Africa to itself and Africa to the world.”

Alawuba’s address came at a moment of notable momentum for African banking, as digital finance is reshaping how individuals and businesses transact, cross-border trade volumes are growing, and demand for locally owned, globally competitive institutions is intensifying.

“Africa’s story is changing,” Alawuba noted. “Young people are innovating, entrepreneurs are creating new businesses, women are leading boldly, creatives are taking our culture global, and institutions are beginning to reimagine the future of trade, finance, technology and development. At UBA, we must continue to see ourselves as enablers of this transformation.”

In his address, Alawuba challenged staff to see the Group’s diversity of languages, cultures, and geographies as a structural advantage in serving African markets that no external institution can replicate.

The GMD demanded that all UBA staff transfer the energy of the celebration into their client relationships and day-to-day execution, citing simplicity, responsiveness, and goal orientation as core standards the Group must hold passionately.

“Let us bring the same energy we display today into our work, with excellence, enterprise and execution,” Alawuba said. “Let us continue to prove that African institutions can be world-class, trusted, innovative and globally competitive.”

UBA also used the occasion to activate Red Vault, its innovative lifestyle rewards platform, bringing a curated selection of African consumer brands directly into the event space. Lush Hair, Zayith, Tobi’s Closet, and Sweet Tooth Cafe were among the brands featured, providing staff with an on-the-ground demonstration of what Red Vault is designed to do at scale, which is to connect UBA customers to a rewards ecosystem anchored in African businesses and everyday experiences.

United Bank for Africa is one of the largest employers in the financial sector on the African continent, with 25,000 employees group-wide and serving over 45 million customers globally. Operating in twenty African countries, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, France and the United Arab Emirates, UBA provides retail, commercial and institutional banking services, leading financial inclusion and implementing cutting-edge technology.

Police Denies Alleged Bandits Attack In Lagos

Parents in parts of Lagos State rushed to schools on Monday to pick up their children following reports of a suspected bandit attack in communities around Eleko and Imota, prompting authorities and the police to dismiss the claims as false.

The panic reportedly spread across schools in Eleko, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, after messages circulated alleging the presence of bandits in the area.

One parent whose children attend Davdan Nursery and Primary School, Eleko, told our correspondent that parents were contacted by school authorities and asked to pick up their wards.

“I was called from my children’s school that bandits are around Eleko and that we should pick up our children from school,” she said.

According to the parent who chose to remain anonymous, the directive affected several schools in the community.

“The directive was issued across the schools around this place, that schools should be closed and that parents should pick up their children. Children are all over the place now. They said all children should go home,” she added.

However, school authorities and government officials dismissed the reports, attributing the panic to misinformation.

The panic was also linked to claims made during a call-in programme on a broadcast station, alleging that two schoolgirls were killed by bandits at a primary school in Imota Local Council Development Area.

A headmaster at LG Nursery and Primary School, Agbowa, Odumeru Adekunle, told our correspondent that the alarm was triggered by an accident and not a security incident.

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Imota LCDA, Benson Ayodele, in a statement, described the claim as false and unverified.

“We wish to state categorically that the information contained in the video is false, misleading, and entirely unfounded. There is no verified report, official record, or credible security information confirming the alleged incident within Imota LCDA,” the statement said.

The council warned that the spread of unverified reports could create unnecessary panic and urged residents to rely on credible sources and official security agencies for information on public safety.

The station later apologised for airing the report without verification.

“During our live phone-in segment, we received calls from listeners alleging that ‘Imota is on fire’ and that ‘bandits are in a public school’ with ‘two girls affected’. In the urgency to inform, the information was aired without full verification from security agencies and community leaders,” the station said.

The Lagos State Police Command also dismissed the claim. The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, described the alleged attack as “false.”

Reacting to viral videos circulating on the incident, the police said they would carry out appropriate investigations before issuing further details.

In a brief response to our correspondent, the PPRO said, “We will analyse the video and make a comment.”

  • Nigerian govt re-arraigns Tukur Mamu on amended terrorism charge

Nigerian govt re-arraigns Tukur Mamu on amended terrorism charge

The Federal Government on Monday re-arraigned Tukur Mamu, the alleged terrorists’ negotiator during the Abuja-Kaduna train attack hostage crisis in 2022, on an amended 17-count terrorism charge.

Mamu, who was re-arraigned before Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja, pleaded not guilty.

Mamu, who was arrested on September 7, 2022, by Egyptian security officials at the Cairo International Airport, was earlier arraigned on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing.

However, the prosecution amended the counts by bringing in more offences, including unlawful possession of firearms without a valid licence and money laundering charges.

When the case was called on Monday, David Kaswe, an Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Justice, informed the court that an amended charge had been filed and served on the defence counsel.

He said the charge was dated and filed on May 26.

Kaswe, who said the prosecution had incorporated more counts in line with the evidence already placed before the court, prayed the court for the defendant to take his plea on the amended charge.

Mamu’s lawyer, Johnson Usman, SAN, did not oppose the application, and Justice Umar directed that the amended charge be read to the defendant.

Mamu, however, pleaded not guilty to the 17 counts after they were read to him, and the prosecution commenced its cross-examination of the accused, who had earlier opened his defence and testified as the sole defence witness.

Mamu opened his defence on April 23 after the Federal Government closed its case by calling seven witnesses in the ongoing trial.

In count one of the charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/96/2023, the defendant was alleged to have, sometime around March 28, 2022, in Kaduna, given support to the Boko Haram terrorist group.

He was alleged to have instigated the terrorist group to boycott the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Committee set up by the Federal Government to negotiate the release of the hostages (victims) of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack, to enhance his role as the negotiator for the payment, receipt and delivery of ransom from the families of the hostages.

In count two, he was alleged to have undermined and obstructed the CDS Committee set up to negotiate the release of the hostages of the attack.

Count three accused him of receiving ransom payments in the sum of $120,000 on behalf of the terrorist group from families of victims of the attack, contrary to Section 21(3)(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

He was also alleged to have committed an offence preparatory to, or in furtherance of, an act of terrorism when he exchanged voice-note communications relating to acts of terrorism with Baba Adamu, the Boko Haram spokesperson.

Mamu was accused of dealing in terrorist funds in the sums of $269,200 and N25,690,500 in counts six and seven, which were allegedly found in his possession.

He was said to have committed an offence of dealing in terrorist property contrary to Section 23(1)(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

The defendant was equally alleged to have been dealing in terrorist funds in the form of 1,840 Indian rupees, 1,700 Egyptian pounds and 115 UAE dirhams in counts 11, 12 and 13, which were found in his possession.

Counts 14 and 15 accused Mamu of money laundering offences involving N25,690,500 and $269,200 allegedly found in his possession.

In count 16, the Federal Government accused him of unlawful possession of a firearm when he allegedly had a Delta Magnum pump-action firearm in his possession without a valid licence.

Mamu was also accused of unlawful possession of firearms when he allegedly had about 47 cartridges (ammunition) in his possession without a valid licence sometime around March 28, 2022.

The offences are contrary to Section 3 of the Firearms Act, Cap F.28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, and punishable under Section 28 of the same Act.

Shortly after the counts were read to him, the prosecution lawyer began cross-examination, and the judge subsequently adjourned the matter until June 8 for continuation of the cross-examination, NAN reports.
