One dead, one missing as three-storey building collapses in Lagos

One person has been confirmed dead while another remains missing after a three-storey building under construction partially collapsed in Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, disclosed in a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale that the incident occurred at about 12:19 pm on Friday at No. 1 Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, Lekki Phase 1.

According to the agency, its Sharks Response Team swiftly moved to the scene after receiving distress calls regarding the collapse.

LASEMA stated that nine persons were affected in the incident.

The agency said seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilised by emergency responders, while one victim was confirmed dead at the scene. Another person was still unaccounted for as rescue operations continued.

“Seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilized by LRU Paramedics and LASAMBUS; one adult male was confirmed dead at the scene and his remains recovered; one adult male remains missing,” the statement read.

The agency explained that search and rescue efforts were still ongoing, with responders manually dismantling concrete slabs at the site to locate the missing victim and ensure that no other person remained trapped beneath the rubble.

LASEMA added that the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, had been engaged to provide rod-cutting equipment, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, was assisting with commodity bagging.

It further stated that all workers at the construction site were being re-engaged to determine if more persons could still be trapped.

Emergency responders at the scene include LASEMA Response Teams, LRU Paramedics, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and LASAMBUS.

Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, directed that rescue efforts be intensified.

“Our priority remains saving lives. We are working methodically and in partnership with LASBCA and SEHMU to ensure no victim is left behind while maintaining safety for responders,” he stated.

The agency also advised motorists to comply with traffic diversions around Old Abeokuta Road inward Abattoir and warned residents against entering construction sites without proper safety certification.

US approves $240 million for humanitarian assistance in Nigeria, others

Nigeria is among the beneficiary countries listed in the United States’ newly approved humanitarian and disaster response assistance to Catholic Relief Services (CRS).

The CRS, the international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community, will receive over $240 million to provide critical needs in selected nations through an extensive network of local partners.

Burma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, and Sudan will also benefit from the multi-sectoral aid spanning food, nutrition, health, water, sanitation, and shelter, among others.

State Department Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response Senior Official Ryan Shrum announced the funding on Friday in Rome, Italy, alongside U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch.

Also at the meeting were U.S. Representative to UN Agencies in Rome Lynda Blanchard, CRS VP for Humanitarian Response Jennifer Poidatz, and Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Alistair Dutton.

The financial grant to Catholic Relief Services, according to the State Department, is the first in a series of awards to trusted and vetted implementing organizations.

It complements the $3.8 billion provided through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reducing grant management burdens and ensuring disbursements are transparent.

The Trump Administration says CRS demonstrates its commitment to working with faith-based bodies that have delivered much-needed assistance in the world’s most difficult environments.

The organization is already on the ground in DR Congo, supporting Ebola response efforts and working to address other life-saving essentials throughout the Central African nation.

Oyo abduction: Women traditionalists go spiritual, storm shrines

Women traditional worshippers from across Egbaland, on Friday, stormed major streets and shrines in Abeokuta, Ogun State, seeking divine intervention for the safe release of the victims of the Oyo abduction.

Clad in white traditional worship attire and carrying various ritual paraphernalia, the women moved through prominent cultural and spiritual landmarks in Abeokuta, invoking ancestral spirits and deities to intervene in the worsening security situation.

The spiritual exercise was led by the Yeye Olokun Agbaye and Olori of Orile-Ilawo Kingdom, Dr Omolara Fashola-MacGregor, who described the procession as a sacred appeal and act of appeasement to revered deities and ancestral spirits for protection over Yorubaland and the nation at large.

They visited several revered shrines, including those at Olumo Rock, Lisabi Agbongbo-Akala, and the shrine of the legendary Egba warrior, Sodeke, before concluding the procession at the Itoku shrine located at Orita Aje Junction in Abeokuta.

The worshippers, at each location, offered prayers and traditional rites in line with longstanding cultural practices.

Addressing newsmen during the spiritual exercise, Fashola-MacGregor said the initiative was borne out of deep concern for the safety of innocent schoolchildren, their teachers, and other Nigerians currently being held captive by kidnappers.

“We are here to appeal to the deities of our forefathers and the spirits of our heroes to intervene in this troubling situation.

“Our prayers are focused on the safe return of those who have been abducted. We believe that when people unite in faith, sincerity and purpose, divine intervention is possible,” she said.
