The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee of the Labour Party National Convention Planning Committee, Dr Philip Agbese, has clarified that the Labour Party, LP, was not part of the opposition political gathering reportedly held in Ibadan at the weekend.

He stressed that the party is currently focused on its forthcoming National Convention and broader preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Agbese, who spoke during a brief interaction with journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, said the party’s leadership and members are fully engaged in internal processes aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of the convention scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

“We were not in Ibadan for any summit. As a party, we are focused on our National Convention coming up on April 28, and on strengthening our internal processes ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Agbese said.

Opposition political parties, including the African Democratic Congress, ADC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, had met in Ibadan to deliberate on a possible coalition and the prospect of presenting a single presidential candidate in 2027.

However, Agbese distanced the Labour Party from the meeting, stating that the party is not involved in any such discussions at this stage, as it prioritises internal consolidation and preparation for future electoral contests.

“Our attention is on putting our house in order. The convention is a critical step in that process, and it is part of a broader effort to strengthen the party ahead of 2027,” he said.

The lawmaker emphasised that internal cohesion and organisational stability remain central to the Labour Party’s strategy, noting that a strong institutional foundation is necessary for effective political participation.

He added that the party is committed to building a credible platform capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians, particularly as political activities begin to gather5 momentum ahead of the next general election.

“We believe that before you talk about external alignments or engagements, you must first build a solid and united structure within your party. That is what we are doing,” Agbese said.

He further noted that while political alliances are part of democratic practice, they must be approached with careful consideration and not at the expense of internal discipline and clarity of purpose.

“At this moment, we are not distracted by any summit or coalition talks. Our focus is clear; prepare for our National Convention, strengthen our internal systems, and position the party effectively for the 2027 elections,” he added.

Agbese’s remarks come amid increasing political realignments and early coalition discussions among opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the next election cycle.

However, the Labour Party’s position, as outlined by the lawmaker, suggests a deliberate and measured approach centred on internal consolidation before any broader political engagements.

Former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Salihu Lukman, has expressed disappointment over the current state of the ruling party, citing a departure from its founding vision.

Lukman, a founding member of the APC, said the party has failed to sustain the ideals that led to its formation, noting that recent developments within its ranks have been discouraging.

DAILY POST reports that the former APC chieftain is currently in the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Monday, Lukman stated that while attention is often focused on crises within opposition parties, the APC is also grappling with internal contradictions that could trigger unforeseen challenges.

According to him, politics remains a contest of ideas and interests, expressing confidence that Nigerians will ultimately make informed choices and choose the ADC.

He said: “I can tell you, I feel disappointed having been part of the founding members of the APC, and knowing the vision that pushed us to form the APC. To see where APC is today, is quite disappointing.

“I mean, for instance, they talk of consensus by now, if you do a check, you find out that all the consensus they have done across the states have collapsed.

“You know, when you talk about the crisis in the opposition party, the ruling party is also faced with its own internal contradictions, which is producing the kind of discomfort that will lead to the crisis that they may not have foreseen.

“I’ve said so severally in this your program, politics is about contestation, and we are ready to confront the situation as it is. And we believe Nigerian people will make the right choice at the end of the day.”

2027: ‘I feel disappointed with APC’ – Ex-National Vice Chairman, Lukman

The Abia State Police Command has bid a final farewell to one of its distinguished officers, Late Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Chris Emeka Okoro, who was laid to rest on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in his hometown of Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.

The solemn burial ceremony attracted a large turnout of senior police officers, family members, friends, and well-wishers, all gathered to honour the life and legacy of the late DCP, who until his death served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Abia State Command.

Delivering the funeral oration on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, described the late officer as a seasoned and accomplished professional whose career was marked by discipline, courage, and leadership excellence.

He noted that DCP Okoro’s years of meritorious service earned him the admiration of colleagues and members of the public, adding that he rose through the ranks with remarkable diligence and professionalism.

Born on December 25, 1970, the late DCP Okoro was a graduate of Political Science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and joined the Nigeria Police Force on July 1, 1992. Throughout his career, he held several key operational positions, including Squadron Commander of No. 15 Police Mobile Force, Ilorin; No. 28 PMF Umuahia; and No. 48 PMF Ahoada. He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Enugu State, before his final posting as DCP Operations in Abia State.

Prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of his soul, with clerics and attendees also praying for strength and comfort for his family in this moment of grief.

The Abia State Police Command noted that the legacy of Late DCP Chris Emeka Okoro will remain indelible in the hearts of officers and men of the Command, as well as all who came in contact with him.

The Ibadan branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised concerns over what it described as chronic underfunding of the judiciary in Oyo State, as well as the continued non-functionality of Rent Tribunals and Customary Courts across the state.

Chairman of the branch, Ibrahim Lawal, made the remarks when he received executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.

Lawal described the condition of the state’s judicial system as “unimpressive,” noting that repeated appeals had been made to Governor Seyi Makinde to address the challenges, particularly at the lower court level.

According to him, the Governor had yet to inaugurate Presidents of the Grace C Customary Courts in the last seven years, adding that these courts remain critical to grassroots justice delivery.

He lamented that both the Customary Courts and Rent Tribunals have remained largely inactive, warning that meaningful economic development would be difficult without a functional justice system.

Lawal recalled that the Grace C Customary Courts last operated during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, stressing that the NBA would welcome efforts to revive and strengthen the judicial system to serve citizens effectively.

He also drew attention to the working conditions of magistrates in the state, noting that some do not have official vehicles.

“It is unacceptable that a magistrate who sits in judgment over criminals has to board the same bus as those same individuals,” Lawal said.

He further warned that such situations could undermine judicial independence and public confidence in the justice system.

“It is equally troubling that a magistrate without a personal vehicle may have to accept a ride from someone who has a case before them. This compromises both dignity and independence,” he added.

Lawal urged the state government to urgently address the challenges, appealing for reforms before the end of the current administration.

Ibadan NBA decries poor funding of judiciary

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have taken the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to the Federal High Court in Lagos, contesting what they described as an arbitrary directive, warning broadcasters and presenters against alleged violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

The suit, filed under case number FHC/L/CS/854/2026, seeks judicial interpretation of several provisions of the 6th Edition of the Broadcasting Code, which the plaintiffs argue are vague, overly broad, and incompatible with constitutional guarantees on freedom of expression, opinion, and access to information.

The NBC had recently cautioned broadcasters against presenting personal views as factual reporting, engaging in conduct deemed as bullying guests, or failing to maintain neutrality, citing breaches of its regulatory code. However, the plaintiffs insist that the directive amounts to an undue restriction on journalistic practice.

SERAP and Nigerian Guild of Editors argue that editorial opinion and value judgments are integral to journalism and are protected forms of expression under both national and international human rights instruments.

They further contended that the regulatory framework failed to clearly define prohibited conduct, thereby creating uncertainty that could allow for arbitrary enforcement against media practitioners.

The plaintiffs also maintain that the National Broadcasting Commission cannot justify the restrictions on the basis of alleged professional shortcomings within the media industry, warning that such actions could have a chilling effect on free speech.

According to them, enforcing the contested provisions, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, risks limiting the diversity of public discourse and undermining democratic engagement.

In their application before the Federal High Court Lagos, they are seeking a declaration that the challenged sections of the Broadcasting Code are unconstitutional due to their vagueness and inconsistency with fundamental rights protections under the Nigerian Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

They are also requesting an order invalidating the provisions and a perpetual injunction restraining the NBC or any other authority from imposing sanctions, fines, or disciplinary measures based on the disputed sections.

No hearing date has been scheduled for the matter.

SERAP, NGE challenge NBC in court over broadcasting code sanctions

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has said that steps are being taken to make available cheaper smartphones in the Nigerian market.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, stated this during a media parley with journalist in Abuja on Friday.

DAILY POST reports that phone prices in Nigeria have reached all-time highs in 2026 due to extreme currency depreciation and inflation, making even budget devices expensive. Entry-level smartphones now often start over N100k, while mid-range devices like the Infinix Hot 60 Pro and Techno Spark 40 Pro range from N150,000 to over N250,000. High-end devices can exceed N1,000,000+.

The current phone market highlights in Nigeria in 2026 show that the budget segment cost between N100k – N200k. Devices such as the Redmi 15C N176,999, and Samsung Galaxy A07, N168,869 dominate this space.

The mid-range segment, cost between N200k – N400k with phone such as the Infinix Hot 60 Pro N240,400, and Tecno Spark 40 Pro Plus, approx. N283,800) offer higher specifications.

High-End, phones in the range of N500, 000 and more such as the Tecno Phantom X5 Pro which cost over N550,000, while new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold/Flip series exceed N1.6 million.

Used Devices: “UK Used” options like the iPhone 11 Pro Max are frequently sought at lower prices, around N495,000.

“We are looking at how cheaper smart phones can be introduced into into the market,” the EVC said.

“But despite this, if you look at the figures, increasingly we are seeing more users moving to 4G. Users are moving away from 3G, 2G devices.

“So this, on its own, is also showing that that move towards smartphone usage is happening, because I think now over about 52% of users are 4G users.”

Speaking earlier in his opening remark, the EVC noted that the media reportage of the telecommunications sector has been so helpful for the Commission.

According to him, this has helped the sector “to implement our policies, keep the general public up to date in terms of progress, and also, most importantly, for me, to hold us accountable.”

“Our philosophy is that of transparency. You’ve seen that through the tariff simplification directive we gave which we are currently, it’s not 100% compliance, because there’s a little bit of technical details behind getting the compliance.

“We also have the major outage Reporting Portal for which a lot of you have reported and highlighted, and, you know, drawn the attention of even senior government stakeholders to some of the issues which the industry is facing, particularly fiber cuts that sometimes, despite our efforts, we need your help in terms of bringing that awareness to the general public so we thank you for that.”

The EVC also mentioned the Corporate Governance guidelines, which the Commission gave a 24 month compliance deadline that is ongoing in the 24 months and expires next year, end of quarter one; the settlement of the USSD debt and other general issues regarding the sustainability of the industry.

Maida, among other things, also mentioned that the Commission’s collaboration with the Office of the National Security Advisor towards operationalizing the critical national infrastructure has been very we’re beginning to yield fruit.

Experienced tactician, Abdu Maikaba is set to be appointed as new head coach of the Flying Eagles, DAILY POST reports.

Maikaba, who is one of the respected local coaches in Nigeria will replaced Aliyu Zubairu.

Zubairu now in charge of Egypt’s second division club, Telecom SC guided the Flying Eagles to the second round of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile last year.

Maikaba has previously worked as an assistant coach to Paul Aigbogun in the Flying Eagles.

He recently worked as head coach of Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, side, Wikki Tourists.

Maikaba has also managed Kano Pillars, Rangers, and Akwa United.

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has debunked speculations that she snubbed fuji musician Pasuma at a Lagos event over the weekend.

A video circulating on X captured the moment the fuji legend tried to get Akindele’s attention while she was exchanging pleasantries with someone else. In the video, the actress continued her conversation with the other person, which led to Pasuma getting back on his seat.

Since the video went viral, it has been speculated that the actress intentionally snubbed the fuji legend.

An X influencer Uoladiti posted the video with the caption, “Moment Funke Akindele snubbed Pasuma in public. This is not looking good at all.”

Reacting, Funke Akindele debunked the allegations, explaining that she greeted and danced with Pasuma at the same event.

“Snub? Hell no. Stop the negativity pls. I saw him, greeted him, danced with him. pasuma is my Egbon. Pls you all should stop this evil,” she wrote.

Following the public snub, Abraham vowed never to initiate conversations with Akindele again.

Former Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew, has predicted that Manchester City will beat Chelsea when both teams clash in the FA Cup final next month.

Chelsea and Man City booked their places in the FA Cup final after beating Leeds United and Southampton, respectively, in the semi-final played at the weekend.

When asked if Chelsea can defeat Pep Guardiola’s side in the FA Cup final, Pardew told talkSPORT: “I don’t think so, no.

“Looking at Manchester City against Southampton, they are in great form, their offensive players are on fire, and Pep Guardiola has got such ammunition from the bench,” he said.

The FA Cup final will take place at Wembley Stadium on 16 May.
